Minería y urbanización en el norte chileno: un ensayo de renovación conceptual

Abstract

This essay discusses the contemporary relationship between mining and urbanization in northern Chile, emphasizing the limited conceptual renewal with which this subject is currently addressed. This lack of renewal can be seen in the prevalence of the ideas of company town and camp in historiographical and social-scientific studies on this relationship, thereby contributing to an isomorphic representation of the mining-urbanization relationship. Considering this, it is propose a "geographically extended" understanding of the mining-urbanization relationship in northern Chile, whose originality lies in understanding its articulation through the concepts of "transurbanization" and "transregionalization."Este ensayo discute la relación contemporánea entre minería y urbanización en el norte chileno, enfatizando en la escasa renovación conceptual con que hoy se aborda este objeto. Esta escasa renovación puede apreciarse en la prevalencia de las ideas del company town, y de campamento, en los estudios historiográficos y científico-sociales sobre dicha relación, contribuyendo con ello a una representación isomórfica de la relación minería-urbanización. Ante ello, se propone una comprensión “geográficamente extendida” sobre la relación minería-urbanización en el norte chileno, cuya originalidad radicaría en entender su articulación mediante los conceptos de “transurbanización” y de “transregionalización”
