The nanoparticle-Protein Corona untold history (1907-2007)

Abstract

Altres ajuts: CERCA Programme/Generalitat de CatalunyaThe adsorption of biomolecules, primarily proteins, on the surfaces of nanoparticles plays a crucial role in elucidating the safe application of nanotechnology, especially in medicine. Termed the "Protein Corona" since 2007, this phenomenon remains of general interest and continues to be subject to intensive research today. Notably, dating back to the XIX century, a large body of early work has addressed the adsorption of proteins onto different surfaces, from colloids to implants. Standing on the shoulders of this historical knowledge could deepen our understanding of the Protein Corona and its biological implications. Herein, we aim to trace the historical trajectory before 2007, combining earlier scientific evidence and findings with contemporary research on the topic. Such insights will contribute to helping and guiding further research into the Protein Corona, thereby accelerating the clinical and societal translation of nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine
