A Small Tribute to the Dead Dream

Abstract

Trabalho de Projeto do Mestrado em Escrita Criativa apresentado à Faculdade de LetrasA Small Tribute to the Dead Dream is an autofictional theater project steeped in nostalgia, fear, and the insecurity of being an immigrant in dark times. The play engages with various works of literature, like Morte e Vida Severina by João Cabral de Melo Neto, and music as tells the story of Pedro Rosario, a married Brazilian immigrant and teacher living in Portugal, who finds himself entangled in the bureaucracies of becoming a legalized citizen and increasingly concerned with the small prejudices he witnesses, like the linguistic prejudice in the workplace, or the difficulty of getting a job because of his brazilian nationality. After a difficult adaptation to the country, its language, and his job, the protagonist feels increasingly out of place, especially with the rise of the far-right, violence, and xenophobia, transforming the country into a new dictatorship, the New Republic. The story then moves towards a dark and melancholicending. In addition to the play, the project also undertakes a critical analysis of the creative process behind the play, uncovering the essential elements that shaped this fictional construction. It aims to discuss the literary creation of autofiction in a theatrical piece that seeks to break away from the limiting standards of literary genres. Furthermore, it examines the use of parody and intertextuality, and the breaking of pre-established norms. Finally, the project will also address issues of immigration, xenophobia, and the rise of hate speech, particularly from the far-right, in Portugal.Pequeno Tributo ao Sonho Morto é um projeto de peça teatral autoficcional banhada na saudade, no medo e na insegurança de ser imigrante em tempos sombrios. A peça dialoga com diversas obras da literatura, como Morte e Vida Severina de João Cabral de Melo Neto, e da música e conta a história de Pedro Rosario, um professor, casado, imigrante brasileiro vivendo em Portugal, que se vê afundado nas burocracias para se tornar cidadão legalizado e cada vez mais preocupado com as pequenas demonstrações preconceituosas presenciadas, como o preconceito linguístico no local de trabalho ou a dificuldade de conseguir emprego por ser brasileiro. Após uma dificultosa adaptação ao país, à língua e ao emprego, o protagonista sente-se cada vez mais deslocado, principalmente com o crescimento da extrema-direita, da violência e da xenofobia que transformam o país em uma nova ditadura, a Nova República. A história caminha, então, para um final sombrio e melancólico. Além da peça, o projeto também empreende em uma análise crítica da incursão criativa da peça, desvendando os elementos essenciais que deram forma a essa construção ficcional. Pretende-se discutir a criação literária de autoficção em uma peça teatral que tenta fugir dos padrões limitantes dos gêneros literários. Além disso, analisa-se a utilização da paródia e da intertextualidade e da quebra dos padrões pré-estabelecidos. Por fim, será também discutida a questão da imigração, da xenofobia e do crescimento do discurso de ódio, principalmente da extrema-direita, em Portugal
