Penelope Harnett gained a degree from Oxford University and trained as an infant teacher. She taught in infant and junior schools in the early 1970s before moving into teacher training. She recalls the formal timetable and teaching in her first junior school and the growing influence of child-centred education on the teaching of history. She discusses the training of primary teachers before the National Curriculum and her role in the creation of materials to support primary teachers with the delivery of the first National Curriculum in the 1990s.
