Interview with Tim Lomas, 30 March 2009

Tim Lomas is Principal School Improvement Adviser for Lincolnshire LEA. After completing his doctorate at Teeside, Tim taught in a variety of schools in the West Midlands in the 1970s. He became involved in assessment and curriculum innovation and joined the Teaching History Research Group in the early 1980s. He was appointed an adviser first in Shropshire, then Lincolnshire. Tim recalls his work in the mid-1970s on the innovative AEB 673 A level history course, which included coursework and historical sources. He was drafted onto the National Curriculum History Working Group as an expert on assessment and recalls the pressures on the Group as they prepared the history curriculum using assessment guidelines they would not have chosen. He goes on to review the changes to the National Curriculum since then and concludes that it still carries the core of the original intention of the HWG. Interviewed by Nicola Sheldon
