Microbial Activity and Diversity Associated with Decomposing Spartina Wrack in Coastal Ecosystems

    No full text
Spartina wrack has not been studied extensively despite considerable accumulation of material in salt marshes. This study addressed: (1) decomposition rates of Spartina alterniflora wrack along a salt marsh elevational gradient; (2) the relative importance of fungi vs. bacteria on Spartina wrack; (3) differences in fungal assemblage structure between standing-dead Spartina and Spartina wrack. Four sites in the salt marsh at Baruch Marine Field Lab in North Inlet, SC were used. Each site had 4 sampling stations (zones) along the elevational gradient: subtidal, intertidal, high-marsh and terrestrial. Decomposition rates of Spartina in litterbags, associated microbial respiration, fungal and bacterial biomass (from ergosterol and epifluorescence microscopy, respectively) were followed over ten months (March-December 2009). Fungal assemblage structure was assessed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of amplified ITS rDNA. We found a decrease of wrack decomposition rate along the elevational gradient (from low to high marsh) and considerably higher fungal than bacterial biomass in all zones. Fungal assemblages on Spartina wrack were surprisingly diverse, with more than 20 phylotypes per sample routinely detected. We observed a clear successional pattern in fungal assemblages as Spartina detritus transitioned from the standing dead position to wrack in all elevation zones. Overall, it appears that fungi are the major microbial decomposers of Spartina in salt marshes both in the standing dead position and as wrack

Tweeting the Dalai Lama, Are Cell Phones Becoming the New Vajras?

On February 22, 2010 the Office of the 14th Dalai Lama joined the online microblogging site Twitter. Twitter is an internet based community, ranked the world’s third most used online social network by Compete.com. Members post messages called “tweets” that are displayed on to their profile pages and delivered to their subscribers, known as followers. The Dalai Lama reportedly joined Twitter after meeting the site’s founder, Evan Williams, although Mr. Williams posted on his own Twitter page that the Dalai Lama had laughed when he suggested the idea to him.1 However, the account may have been set up one week before Williams met him and five hours after the seemingly dismissive tweet the @DalaiLama account was listed as confirmed authentic and began publishing messages.2 Within a week, the Dalai Lama had over 100,000 Twitter followers

Joseph and Rosa Murray, July 2010

    No full text
An interview with Rosa and Joseph Murray, an elder song leader and farmer in Beaufort, South Carolina. Murray married Rosa Murray, a native of Saint Helena Island, but he was born on the mainland near Beaufort, South Carolina. The interview begins mid-conversation talking about fertilizer, but quickly changes to talking about how he remembers Ride on Jesus being sung by his wife (Rosa), and how she sings songs that he had not heard before. He sings a few bars of It\u27s Alright, Jesus is the Light of the World, and Everything Moving. He talks about how songs are a form of communication, sharing songs with one another in the community, then expounds by testimonials on the Lord\u27s sheep. His mother was a woman who could sing and would catch the spirit during a shouting song. Rosa Murray enters the interview around 15 minutes in, to talk about how individuals were taught songs and how individuals were baptized at the river. She sings a few Ride on Jesus, Mary Had a Baby, and Blood Done Sign My Name. Joseph Murray sings the communion hymn, and then talks about the songs that he\u27s forgotten for funerals and baptisms. Rosa and Joseph both sing Nobody Knows, Remember Me, I Wonder, Serve One of God, Hey Neva. The interview terminates at the start of Hey Neva. After a break in the recording, the tape finishes with Hey Neva. Rosa sings Where You There? and she remembers a woman in the choir she called her mother, whose funeral happened the previous Wednesday. Rosa discusses how she came back to Ebenezer after she moved back to the island from Florida, and how she was recruited back to the prays house from Nina (who recommended the Murrays to Crawford).https://digitalcommons.coastal.edu/eric-crawford-oral-histories/1007/thumbnail.jp
