Harding in Law and Government 13    ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: RYAN RUMMAGE  By Jacob Anderson     This year’s Alumni Spotlight proudly features Ryan Rummage, an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. Ryan came to Harding in the fall of 2008, where he majored in both Political Science and English. He graduated in the spring of 2012 and began law school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, the next fall. After graduating from Emory with his J.D. in May 2015, he began working for the Department of Justice through the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Birmingham as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Operating within the Criminal Division of the office, his current position involves investigating and prosecuting various federal crimes, such as financial fraud, public corruption, health care fraud, tax matters, environmental issues, and even some violent crimes involving weapons and illegal drugs. As a result, he spends plenty of time in court, and his daily tasks include researching and responding to case motions, attending hearings, and preparing witnesses. He must also frequently obtain subpoenas, search warrants, and review evidence to determine if federal charges are Tenor of Our Times  14   appropriate for the specific case. Ryan writes that he thoroughly enjoys his job, and it is partially due to the different challenges it presents daily. During his time at Harding, Ryan indicates that the History and Political Science Department helped shape his career and goals. The Department’s classes and faculty helped foster his ability to think critically about the law and politics, a crucial element for anyone considering a career in law. Additionally, he reports that Harding’s Christian environment was very beneficial for him. The integration of faith and learning in this field helped frame the way he views critical issues in society; consequently, he formed a genuine desire to see justice carried out by prosecuting offenders and advocating for the protection of the rights of various entities, businesses, and individuals. He encourages those interested in pursuing a similar career to take classes that challenge their ability to read and write critically. Fully understanding an argument, prescribing solutions, and the ability to articulate them are fundamental to a lawyer’s position, no matter what area of law it is. Lastly, he contends that pre-law students do not need to know what kind of lawyer they want to be before law school. That specific interest will come in due time. Until then, he writes that students should “soak up this time at Harding!” Again, Tenor of our Times is very pleased to spotlight Ryan Rummage in this year’s issue.
