This SoTL study examined the learning of 28 undergraduate students who engaged in: (1) reading and lecture; (2) instructor demonstration of skills; (3) student experience practicing the skill. Findings suggest all three phases of learning were important, but experiential learning tasks promoted higher levels of learning according to Bloom’s taxonomy

Apoyo en Comunidad: A Proposed Manual for Latinx and Hispanic Support Groups

    Get PDF
Navigating college life can be difficult; add to that the complications of navigating different cultures and it creates a chasm for young adults to overcome. This is true for many Latinx college students who often attend colleges where few resources exist to offer support in navigating these social and cultural issues in their everyday life. Additionally, while group therapy is championed as a treatment modality for many, few groups exist that target Latinx communities, especially Latinx college students. This project aims to highlight these social and cultural issues faced by Latinx individuals and provide clinicians with a treatment manual to help support Latinx students through these issues, while building a support network on their college campus through a support group that is mindful of cultural considerations in the Latinx community

Avian diversity in areas of differing prescribed fire cycles on reclaimed coal mines in Bell County, Ky

Avian diversity in areas of differing prescribed fire cycles on reclaimed coal mines in Bell County, Ky James Ledford and Stephen Sumithran Department of Biological Sciences Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY 40475 Grasslands are dynamic in space and time evolving in disturbances from fire and herbivores. However, studies on the responses of birds and other wildlife populations to fire and post-fire habitat changes are minimal. This study was conducted in the Appalachian mountains atop one of the first reclaimed mountaintop removal coal mines. We used the Merlin Bird ID app to record bird calls and identify their species. We recorded at three different sites i.e. current year burn, burned five years ago, and never burned. The results show that species richness and Shannon Weaver Diversity Index were highest in sites that were burned five years ago compared to unburned sites. Student Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Simulated Versus Clinical Experiences in Learning Clinical Skills

    No full text
Occupational therapy education programs use simulation and clinical environments to teach students clinical skills. However, students’ perceptions of how these environments meet their learning needs are not known. The objective of this study was to explore entry-level occupational therapy students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of simulation and clinical environments in learning clinical skills. This was an observational study, measuring the students’ perceptions after engaging in simulations and clinical environments. Participants were occupational therapy students enrolled in Master\u27s and Doctorate programs (N = 460) in five accredited entry-level occupational therapy programs. Students completed the Clinical Learning Environment Comparison Survey (CLECS). CLECS measures students’ perceptions of how well their learning needs were met in simulations and clinical learning environments in six domains. For the Total scale and Communication, Holism, Critical Thinking, and Teaching Learning Dyad subscales, students perceived that the clinical environment prepared them better than the simulated environment (p \u3c .05). For occupational therapy Process and Self-efficacy domains, students perceived no differences. However, the perception of the effect of the environment on learning was small for Total scale, Holism, and Critical Thinking (Cohen’s d = 0.31 – 0.40) and medium for Communication skills (Cohen’s d = 0.56). Students perceived a difference in how simulations versus clinical environments met their learning needs. Our findings emphasize the importance of context when designing student learning experiences

Tiered Experiential Learning for Skill Development

    Get PDF
Experiential learning functions as a cornerstone of training for psychologists. These opportunities allow students to acquire diverse skills to serve them in a broad spectrum of practice milieus. We offer an overview of a tiered experiential learning framework that may be adapted and applied to other disciplines and training experiences

Blending AI and Human Performance to Engage Students

    Get PDF
Human-powered avatars were used in an adolescent development class to engage college students and meet course objectives. Students participated in mixed-reality simulations working with middle-school parents and a small group of teenagers. Student feedback on the use of this technology was mixed and offered suggestions for future classroom implementation

The Design Report: How Image Generative Artificial Intelligence is Changing the Culture of Design?

    No full text
The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is reshaping the global culture of visual communication professions by automating design and design-thinking, causing an acceleration in the already-shifting values which favor profit, speed, and cost effectiveness over human expression. As the accessibility of GAI models is integrated into creative spaces, opportunities within the profession are beginning to diminish causing introductory and junior level design positions to be highly competitive and out of reach for many beginner designers’ reach. Additionally, GAI is causing the homogenization of global culture and values, ultimately reinforcing the ideas of capitalism. The result has been a further reduction of intentional, visual craft to a commodity; stripping humanity of the opportunity for expression. Through critiques of researchers such as Kara Combs et al., Benjamin Matthews et al., Ben Davis, Mike Monterio and many more sources, generative artificial intelligence is being exposed for how it is promoting racial bias, accelerating the displacement of art-related jobs, and discouraging the human artist. Analysis of this research and comparisons between human art and artificially generated art highlights the urgent need for regulation of GAI development–not only for the benefit of the design professional, but for all of humanity’s role in shaping global culture

Moving Discussion Off the Discussion Boards: A Method for Enhancing Student Engagement

The instructor of the online, asynchronous managerial public health course recognized that skill development occurs better in real-time. Discussion board assignments were replaced with groups of students working through structured prompts in recorded Zoom meetings. Remote learners’ needs were met while they practiced course concepts

The Thing with Feathers: An Introduction to Hope-Efficacy Affective Reappraisal Training (HEART)

    Get PDF
Hope is an essential cognitive state as it relates to motivation and aspirations and allows one to feel efficacious in pursuing desired outcomes in life. When used ineffectively, it may also have negative effects on well-being and quality of life in the disappointment that follows from unmet expectations. Hopelessness (aka despair), on the other hand, occurs when one loses hope, and when one is unable to recover from despair, the consequences may be extreme. Despair may result in negative impacts to well-being and mental health and may also present in individuals’ behaviors. Those who experience extreme, severe, and frequent despair without strategies for remediating that cognitive state are at risk of developing coping strategies that are maladaptive, destructive, or fatal. The present work is a review of models of hope backed by scientific inquiry, including the dimensions of hope as they relate to cognitions, emotions, behaviors, and personality traits. Included in this work is also a review of the limited research evaluating methods of treating hopelessness to build a framework that may effectively aid individuals in building and maintaining a hopeful cognitive state. The intention is not to reduce feelings of despair, but to establish a repertoire of cognitive and emotional skills to contend with despair not if, but when, things fall apart. Hope-Efficacy Affective Reappraisal Training (HEART) is a group treatment program designed to target hopelessness based on current hope theory

Creating Successful Learning Environments: Applying the CoI Model in Faculty Development

    Get PDF
The Community of Inquiry (Col) model is commonly utilized to shape the structure of online learning environments for students. Garrison et al. (2010) suggest extending the Col model to the professional development design. Its capacity to cultivate a supportive learning environment for faculty development holds significant promise
