Migrations and Communications in a Planetary Age: Debates and Actions

This book compiles a diverse collection of studies and critical reflections on migration and communication, drawn from debates at the international conference “Migration and Communication in the Planetary Era: Debates and Actions”, held in Braga in April 2025. The conference marked the conclusion of the MigraMediaActs project, which aimed to create a space to question, rethink, and reconstruct community trajectories through communication in a fragmented and polarised planetary context characterised by profound inequalities. Across 15 chapters, derived from conference presentations and subjected to peer review, this collection gathers contributions from authors from different fields of knowledge and diverse geographies, addressing a wide range of topics, including: debates on migration policies and human rights; electronic border surveillance procedures and automated profiling with the assistance of so-called artificial intelligence; the dynamics of digital platforms and the impact of automated datafication systems; representations of migration and migrant people in journalistic discourse; the participation and agency of migrants and other marginalised groups in the media; and other issues related to connectivity and access to information for migrant populations in digital contexts, as well as disputes surrounding hate speech and xenophobia. In recognition of linguistic and cultural diversity, each chapter in this work is presented in the language chosen by its authors. By integrating empirical research and critical analyses, this book functions not only as a thematic collection but also as a political gesture that interrogates who is granted a voice, who is heard, and who counts only as a statistic. URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY: NOISE AND AIR POLLUTION IN CITIES

A obra Qualidade Ambiental Urbana: Ruído e Poluição Atmosférica em Cidades constitui uma reflexão aprofundada sobre a interação entre o ambiente construído, o ruído e a poluição atmosférica — fatores determinantes na qualidade de vida e na sustentabilidade das cidades contemporâneas.          Partindo de uma perspetiva interdisciplinar que cruza a engenharia urbana, as ciências ambientais e o planeamento urbano, o livro propõe uma leitura integrada destes dois domínios, frequentemente analisados de forma isolada, evidenciando como a sua compreensão articulada permite definir estratégias mais eficazes de gestão e políticas públicas baseadas em conhecimento científico. A Parte I apresenta o enquadramento conceptual e normativo dos temas, abordando as principais fontes, métodos de medição e modelação, bem como os impactos na saúde e no ambiente urbano. São também discutidas as diretivas europeias e os instrumentos de planeamento aplicáveis em Portugal, sublinhando o papel das autoridades locais na implementação de planos de ação e mapas estratégicos. A Parte II centra-se na aplicação prática das metodologias através de estudos de caso em Viana do Castelo, Braga e Vila Real, onde se destacam os modelos CityAir e CityNoise-Air, que integram indicadores de ruído e qualidade do ar num índice composto de Qualidade Ambiental Urbana. A obra valoriza ainda as Soluções Baseadas na Natureza (NbS), com destaque para as Estruturas Verdes Urbanas — corredores verdes, parques, coberturas e fachadas vegetadas — pela sua capacidade de filtrar poluentes, mitigar o ruído e reduzir o efeito de ilha de calor. O livro constitui, assim, um contributo relevante para profissionais e investigadores comprometidos com a construção de cidades mais sustentáveis, resilientes e saudáveis.The book “Urban Environmental Quality: Noise and Air Pollution in Cities” offers an in-depth reflection on the interaction between the built environment, noise, and air pollution — key factors determining the quality of life and the sustainability of contemporary cities. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective that bridges urban engineering, environmental sciences, and urban planning, the book proposes an integrated reading of these two domains, which are often analysed separately. It demonstrates how their combined understanding enables the definition of more effective management strategies and public policies grounded in scientific knowledge. Part I presents the conceptual and regulatory framework of both phenomena, addressing their main sources, measurement and modelling methods, and the impacts on human health and the urban environment. It also discusses European directives and Portuguese planning instruments, emphasizing the role of local authorities in implementing action plans and strategic maps for noise and air quality management. Part II focuses on the practical application of these methodologies through case studies carried out in Viana do Castelo, Braga, and Vila Real. The CityAir and CityNoise-Air models, developed at the University of Minho, are highlighted for integrating noise and air quality indicators into a composite Urban Environmental Quality Index, supporting spatial analysis and sustainable urban planning. The book also highlights the importance of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), particularly Urban Green Structures — green corridors, parks, green roofs and façades — for their capacity to filter pollutants, mitigate noise, and reduce the urban heat island effect. Ao longo de 15 capítulos, provenientes de trabalhos apresentados no congresso e submetidos a revisão por pares, esta coletânea reúne contributos de autores de diferentes áreas do saber e oriundos de diferentes geografias, abordando um vasto leque de temáticas, entre as quais se destacam: o debate sobre políticas migratórias, direitos humanos, os procedimentos de vigilância eletrónica nas fronteiras e perfilagem automatizada com auxílio da chamada inteligência artificial; as dinâmicas das plataformas digitais e o impacto dos sistemas automáticos de datificação; as representações das migrações e das pessoas migrantes em discursos jornalísticos; a participação e agência de pessoas migrantes e de outros grupos minorizados nos média, e outras questões relacionadas com a conectividade e o acesso de pessoas migrantes à informação no contexto digital, bem como com as disputas em torno dos discursos de ódio e da xenofobia. Numa perspetiva de valorização da diversidade linguística e cultural, cada capítulo desta obra é apresentado no idioma escolhido pelos seus autores. Ao integrar investigações empíricas e análises críticas, este livro afirma-se não apenas como uma coletânea temática, mas também como um gesto político que questiona quem tem direito à palavra, quem é escutado e quem conta apenas como estatística. Deste modo, evidencia-se o papel da comunicação tanto na reprodução de hierarquias coloniais e desigualdades, quanto na criação de espaços de resistência e na produção de contranarrativas

Science Sights

Science Sights aims to make it possible for a certain (scientific) gaze to hover and land in natural spaces, transfiguring and revealing them as a source of multidisciplinary knowledge and learning. In this sense, city itineraries (Braga), mountain routes (Sameiro, Arga and da Estrela) and along the coastline (Litoral de Esposende and Amorosa) are proposed, so that Nature reveals itself to the different Sciences, in angles, sometimes (almost) geometrically equal, sometimes complementary. Not being initially aware that we were treading “humboldtian” terrain, in fact we were only following, at our scale, the path opened by Alexander Von Humboldt (1769-1859), German scientist, polymath, naturalist and environmentalist. In his enormous appreciation for the paradox of Nature's diversity and uniqueness, either because of the affinity with the volcanoes he knew, or because of the similarities and differences of fauna and flora, throughout his very long journey he undertook, treading Humboldt's paths is persisting in facing Nature as a result of an interrelationship of phenomena, all painted, as he said, with a “wide brush”, incessantly seeking the true “painting of nature”, his Naturgemäld. It is common sense that some of the Sciences, due to their more naturalistic character, have an appetite, one would say visceral, to take the field as their laboratory. But, for sure, the emanation of scientific knowledge sprouts from the magma of natural phenomena, which are the sum and substance of them all. In fact, all physics-chemistry-mathematics-geologies-biologies are in the breeze-sea-river-mountain-plant-street-church-glacier. It all starts with the ability to get amazed by the observation and, little by little, we learn how to open doors to the stone and to the drop of water and to the flower, asking them to let us in into their intimacy. Afterwards, aware of some of these intimacies, as if the world is going through a metamorphosis. It is our wish that the testimony we put forward in these pages can be evidence that it is possible to design multidisciplinary field trips, to build a repository of topics to be addressed in these outdoor activities and to demonstrate that we can see as long as we know how to observe! The itineraries proposed for these field trips were selected due to the easy access to each of the points of interest, providing privileged spaces for observation and integration of multidisciplinary knowledge. These are not closed routes, as the visitor finds multiple opportunities to pursue his curiosity. The chapters referring to the coastline of Esposende and Amorosa, Serra de Arga and Serra da Estrela, as they were part of a Field Guide written within the scope of the “Projecto Sentidos da Ciência” of the School of Sciences, University of Minho, were revised and expanded. In this book routes are suggested, with stops and respective geographic coordinates (obtained by GPS, in WGS84), and for each one of them several activities and observations are proposed. Each chapter starts with a summary of the topics to be addressed in the visit, followed by a detailed presentation of the itinerary, in which the topics presented are further explored, using, for example, some theoretical notes that allow explaining the phenomena under observation, and even, sometimes, some suggestions for simple experiments that can be carried out in the field. To complete and for better interpretation of the information provided, a list of recommended bibliography is included, as well as a glossary that will allow the understanding of language and scientific and technical terms used throughout this fieldguide, and also a Geological Time Scale. As an Appendix, there is a list of support materials to assist the guides of field trips (teachers, tour guides, among others), whose scientific-pedagogical approach is intended to be unitary and multiple!Ciências com Vistas, também se pode ler Visitas com Ciência, pretende tornar possível que um certo (científico) olhar paire e aterre em espaços naturais, transfigurando-os e, assim, revelando-os como fonte de conhecimentos e aprendizagens de cariz multidisciplinar.
