On homicide, forensic practice, and forensic discourse in Madrid

    Get PDF
The judicial and legal records of early modern Spain are a valuable source of information on criminal investigative practices prior to the emergence of modern forensic science in the nineteenth century. Drawing on court records from Madrid’s highest tribunal during the early modern period, and particularly those dealing with domestic violence, this essay sheds light on the investigative process and the forensic techniques employed by justice officials and medical personnel in the search for criminal evidence. It also considers written testimonies in the form of memorials and “forensic discourses” written by judges and prosecutors, with the aim of highlighting the importance of the forensic function in the resolution of criminal cases. Forensic technology was used as a means of “knowing the truth” but was also an essential component of the administration of justice.European Research Council under Horizon 2020 (ERC2017-Advanced Grant 787015

    Get PDF
On World Diabetes Day in 2014, a group of nurses at the Cudeyo Health Center (Cantabria) initiated a community intervention with the aim of going beyond prescription and getting closer to the social context where real practices took place. The main aim was to promote healthy habits among the general population. Several social agents from the community took part in the design and development of this intervention: Town Council, Association of Hotel Businesses, Cultural Association and Primary Care Management. The intervention consisted of several activities: an information tent, the 2nd Walk called "Move for diabetes" and the diabetic-friendly main course based on "the plate method" served by eight participating restaurants. Due to the funding they received from the Town Council and Primary Care Management, the final price of the menu for the participants was 3 euros. The high participation (60 people in the walk and 70 in the diabetic menu) as well as its impact in the press and radio demonstrated the success of this intervention

Evaluating quantile regression neural networks for optimizing real-time applications on heterogeneous platforms

Modern cyber-physical systems increasingly rely on computationally demanding applications, particularly at the edge, where Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms are deployed. To meet these demands, industry trends are shifting towards heterogeneous MultiProcessor Systems on Chip (MPSoCs), which must also satisfy strict real-time and functional safety requirements. A major challenge in such systems is memory contention, where multiple processing units compete for shared memory resources, affecting application performance and the ac-curate estimation of Worst-Case Execution Times (WCETs). Traditional static analysis becomes impractical as system configurations grow in complexity. This work presents the design of an analysis and optimization frame-work for real-time systems that re-evaluates WCET estimates based on system configurations to reflect the impact of memory contention on heterogeneous platforms. The proposed method estimates new WCETs using Quantile Regression Neural Networks (QRNNs), which infer memory contention from Event Monitor data. Experimental results reveal that QRNN models must be system-specific for accurate predictions and that memory access pat-terns significantly affect model generalization. Two strategies are proposed: using generic models for simplicity or task-specific models for higher accuracy. Despite some potential underestimations, QRNNs maintain a strong correlation with actual observed contention, enabling effective worst-case scenario identification. Furthermore, a comparative analysis highlights the superior scalability of the estimation-based approach over empirical mea-surements, especially in large system optimization processes where performance can be easily enhanced by at least two orders of magnitude, making it a practical solution for real-time system design and analysis. This work was partially funded by MICIU/ AEI /10.13039/501100011033 and FEDER, UE under grants PID2021-124502OB-C42 and PID2021-124502OB-C44 (PRESECREL), and also PID2024-155230OB-C41 and PID2024-155230OB-C44 (Re-InITS)

Passengers' perception of airlines' services: addressing systematic and random variation in tastes

    Get PDF
This paper investigates heterogeneities in passengers' perceptions of airlines' services considering systematic and random variations in users' tastes. For this purpose, an efficient design of a stated preference survey is carried out, where attributes related to the in-flight travel and to the passenger`s experience before and after the flight are considered. A Random Parameter Multinomial Logit model is estimated with the obtained data, which also considers systematic variations in user tastes. The obtained results show that most of the parameters associated with the considered variables fit better to a normal or uniform distribution, and that part of their variance can be explained by interacting these variables with other variables such as gender, age, travel frequency or income level. The proposed model allows conclusions to be drawn and marketing policies to be implemented that directly aim at certain user segments, in addition to comprehensively explaining passenger behaviour by showing their preferencesThe work was supported in part by: Grant PLEC2021-007824 funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and, by the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR

    La Jarradilla: strategic analysis

    No full text

    No full text
This Master's thesis investigates the relationship between the microstructural characteristics of rocks and their apparent fracture toughness (KIN), utilizing experimental data from four-point bending tests and petrographic analyses. Four rock types were analyzed: Macael Marble (metamorphic), Carrara Marble (metamorphic), Floresta Sandstone (sedimentary), and Moleanos Limestone (sedimentary), aiming to identify microstructural parameters influencing crack propagation resistance. Through multiple and logistic regression models, variables such as notch radius, fracture type (intergranular/transgranular), critical crack length (2L), and dimensions of the first fractured grain were evaluated. The results demonstrate that rock microstructure—including porosity, cementation, and mineral distribution—significantly impacts fracture toughness (KIN), though its influence varies across rock types.Máster en Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos (Plan 2020

Breaking dogmas in axillary lymphadenectomy and quality of life

Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), although increasingly less necessary, is still required in specific breast cancer surgery scenarios, such as cases with a high axillary tumor burden. However, traditional practices are being reassessed due to the associated morbidity and impacts on recovery. This review explores five critical and controversial innovations in ALND: (1) same-day discharge, (2) omission of surgical drains, (3) application of fibrin sealants, (4) minimally invasive techniques, and (5) their collective influence on quality of life (QoL). Same-day discharge has proven to be safe and cost-effective, increasing patient satisfaction without raising complication rates. The omission of drains, while slightly increasing seroma volumes, is linked to shorter hospital stays and fewer complications. The use of fibrin sealants shows promising results in reducing the seroma volume and duration, expediting recovery, although their routine use remains under debate. Minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques reduce morbidity and improve cosmetic outcomes while maintaining oncological safety. Quality of life (QoL) is essential in the evaluation of breast cancer treatment and is evaluated using tools such as EORTC QLQ-C30, QLQ-BR23, and FACT-B, SF-36, which assess physical, emotional, and psychosocial recovery. Innovations in ALND seem to improve QoL by minimizing pain, increasing arm function, and reducing psychological stress, underscoring the importance of patient-centered strategies. Although axillary lymphadenectomy increases arm morbidity compared to sentinel node biopsy, its overall impact on quality of life appears limited, likely due to the overlapping effects of systemic therapies and breast surgery
