How adoption intention changes as a function of medical and close-relative advice

The present research explores how consumers perceive pet adoption in different contexts. Specifically, it aims to assess how pet adoption intentions differ when we are encouraged by medical and close-relative advice, as well as we attribute hedonic and utilitarian values to the pets when facing a mental health framework. In this research, these questions are explored where a new perspective regarding consumer behavior towards the impact of pets on human mental health is proposed. While past research has suggested that there is a stronger attachment to hedonic possessions, rather than utilitarian ones, in the present study, it was observed that the type of advice - medical or close-relative -, does not significantly impact emotional connections to pets. In fact, pets were perceived more as experiential, rather than material, regardless of the type of advice. Thus, attachment to pets relies more on emotional connections, rather than on the context itself. Regarding the adopter’s psychological attributes, it was found that relational attributes are favored over self-improvement ones. Furthermore, although Animal-Assisted Therapy is perceived as safe and credible, there may be a slight skepticism towards it. The present study adds to the literature on pet adoption, which has an increased relevance for different fields in the marketing area, as understanding how pets may influence consumer behavior beyond the immediate context of pet ownership is crucial for the companies’ strategies to thrive. Estas questões são exploradas, enquanto uma nova perspetiva do comportamento do consumidor face ao impacto dos animais de estimação na saúde mental é proposta. Enquanto pesquisas anteriores sugeriram uma maior ligação aos bens hedónicos do que aos utilitários, no presente estudo, observou-se que o tipo de aconselhamento - médico ou de parentes próximos - não tem impacto significativo nas ligações emocionais com os animais. De facto, estes foram considerados mais experienciais do que materiais, independentemente do tipo de aconselhamento. Assim, a relação com os mesmos assenta maioritariamente nas ligações emocionais do que no contexto. Relativamente aos atributos psicológicos da pessoa que adota, os relacionais são mais favorecidos do que os de desenvolvimento pessoal. Além disso, embora a Terapia Assistida por Animais seja considerada segura e credível, pode ainda haver um ligeiro ceticismo. O presente estudo contribui para a literatura sobre a adoção de animais de estimação, que tem uma relevância crescente para diferentes áreas do marketing, uma vez que compreender de que forma os mesmos podem influenciar o comportamento do consumidor para além do contexto imediato da sua posse é crucial para o sucesso das estratégias das empresas. Os deveres de diligência decorrentes da corporate sustainability due diligence directive

O caminho da sustentabilidade tem vindo a trilhar um percurso decisivo no que concerne ao direito societário. Desde março de 2021 que se tem progredido na construção de um projeto legislativo que vise a promoção de comportamentos empresariais sustentáveis e responsáveis. A Proposta de Diretiva CSDDD é, essencialmente, um marco na política da União Europeia na proteção dos direitos humanos e do ambiente, oferecendo maior segurança jurídica e concorrência leal, bem como uma maior transparência para os acionistas, consumidores e outros stakeholders. Na presente dissertação, iremos abordar o escopo e as implicações da Proposta de Diretiva, analisando os seus pontos fortes e apontando algumas críticas que consideramos ser essenciais a ter em conta no futuro para o sucesso do diploma. Iremos, igualmente, observar como é que a transposição da eventual Diretiva se refletirá no ordenamento jurídico português e as mudanças que terão de ocorrer no direito societário. A versão de referência é a resultante da sua recente aprovação, a 15 de março de 2024, pelo Conselho da UE. Por fim, analisar-se-á a forma como este processo legislativo tem dado passos construtivos e consideráveis na alteração dos comportamentos empresariais de modo que se atinja uma economia neutra no plano carbónico e sustentável.The path to sustainability has been a decisive one in corporate law. Since March 2021, a legislative project has been in the works, aimed at promoting sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour. The Proposal for a CSDDD Directive is essentially a milestone in the European Union's policy to protect human rights and the environment, offering greater legal certainty and fair competition, as well as greater transparency for consumers. In this dissertation, we will look at the scope and the implications of the Proposal for a Directive, considering the amendments of 1 June 2023, analyzing its strengths, and pointing out some criticisms that we believe are essential to take into consideration in the future for the success of the legislation. We will also analyze how the transposition of the Directive will be reflected in the Portuguese legal system and the changes that will have to take place in corporate law. We take into consideration the version subject to approval on 15th March 2024 by the EU Council. Finally, we will analyze how this legislative process has taken constructive and considerable steps towards changing business behaviour in order to achieve a carbonneutral and sustainable economy

O requisito mínimo de fundos próprios e passivos elegíveis (MREL)

A adoção da BRRD teve como objetivo assegurar a existência de uma resolução ordenada, imputando os menores custos possíveis aos contribuintes e reforçando a confiança no setor bancário. O MREL surge como um dos principais instrumentos que reforça e fortalece a resolubilidade de um banco, tendo em conta que este requisito assegura que as instituições dispõem de uma suficiente capacidade de absorção de perdas e de recapitalização. Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o enquadramento jurídico do MREL, tendo em vista a complexidade e atualidade do regime. O estudo começa com uma descrição do propósito, autoridade competente e sujeição ao MREL, passando de seguida aos critérios de elegibilidade, que permitem distinguir os passivos considerados elegíveis para efeitos de MREL. Ademais, o estudo explora a calibração do requisito de MREL, nomeadamente a forma de expressão do requisito e os requisitos de subordinação. Adicionalmente, são desenvolvidas as regras aplicáveis à determinação do requisito de MREL a entidades pertencentes a grupos, bem como a relação com outros requisitos regulamentares e com o TLAC. Finalmente, o estudo aborda ainda as questões relativas ao incumprimento do MREL. Os principais resultados e contributos deste estudo prendem-se com uma sistematização do regime legal, concluindo favoravelmente pela introdução deste requisito, atendendo à maior credibilidade e segurança conferida ao regime da resoluçãoThe adoption of the BRRD is aimed at ensuring the existence of an orderly resolution, the lowest possible costs to taxpayers, and reinforcing confidence in the banking sector. The MREL emerges as one of the main instruments that reinforces and strengthens the resolvability of a bank, considering this requirement ensures that institutions have sufficient loss absorption and recapitalization capacity. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the legal framework of MREL in view of the complexity and timeliness of the regime. The study begins with a description of the purpose, competent authority, and subjection to MREL, followed by the eligibility criteria, which distinguishes the liabilities considered eligible for MREL. Furthermore, the dissertation explores the calibration of the MREL requirement, in particular the form of expression of the requirement and the subordination requirements. Additionally, the rules applicable to the determination of the MREL requirement for group entities, as well as the relationships with other regulatory requirements and with TLAC, are deepened. Finally, the dissertation also addresses the issue of breaches of the MREL. The main results and contributions of this dissertation relate to the systematization of the legal framework, concluding favorably for the introduction of this requirement given the greater credibility and security conferred on the resolution regime

O presente relatório tem como objetivo documentar o processo de produção da curta-metragem Heebie Jeebies. O projeto foi realizado no âmbito da conclusão do Mestrado em Som e Imagem com especialização em Animação por Computador. Heebie Jeebies é uma curta-metragem de animação 3D que tem como objetivo refletir sobre a saúde mental, nomeadamente a ansiedade, de uma maneira leve trazendo à tona as suas problemáticas. O seu objetivo é trazer para a conversa o que é a ansiedade e como podemos fazer com que esta seja vista como algo positivo. Este documento é dividido em quatro capítulos que refletem o processo da realização do projeto. A Introdução, que expõe as Motivações, Informações Gerais e equipa que foi constituída para a realização deste projeto. O segundo capítulo explora as Referências, Pesquisa, Metodologias e Cronogramas utilizados. O terceiro capítulo documenta o Historial de Produção referenciando todo o processo de desenvolvimento de Heebie Jeebies. Por último, temos a Reflexão Crítica onde é feita uma reflexão sobre os problemas e soluções encontradas, aprendizagens adquiridas e comparação entre resultados e objetivos. Em conclusão, o presente documento é um compilado do trabalho realizado durante o ano letivo 2023/2024. The goal is to bring into the conversation what anxiety is and how we can make it seen as something positive. This document is divided into four chapters that reflect the process of producing this project. The Introduction explains the author's motivations, general information and the team created to carry out this project. The third chapter documents the Production History, chronologically referencing the entire development process of Heebie Jeebies. Targeted for being women and reporting on the presidency: gendered-based violence against female journalists by populists in office

This study examines the relationship between gender-based violence and the safety of journalists during the age of the populist zeitgeist. It includes an exploratory analysis of the discourses used by Jair Bolsonaro against Brazilian female journalists throughout his presidency. The findings provide evidence of the persistent misogynistic and patriarchal norms and attitudes of right-wing populists, who often target women based on their gender or perceived status to undermine them. The study concludes that Bolsonaro combined derogatory comments about gender and sexuality with attacks on the reputation and morals of female journalists. By leveraging ideologically motivated and culturally entrenched gender stereotypes, he constructed discursive strategies that shaped different identities for Brazilian women journalists. This approach aimed to damage theircredibility and obstruct their ability to perform their journalistic duties effectively, especially in the politically complex reporting environment. Fatores de desgaste profissional na área de consultoria

A consultoria desempenha um papel crucial no mundo dos negócios, fornecendo diagnósticos e soluções totalmente especializadas para as necessidades de cada cliente. No entanto, a dinâmica de trabalho neste setor pode ser altamente exigente e stressante, levando ao desgaste físico, emocional e mental por parte dos consultores, sendo que nos últimos anos, tem-se assistido a um aumento na conscientização sobre os efeitos adversos do desgaste profissional na consultoria. Diante deste cenário, o objetivo deste estudo passa por perceber os fatores que contribuem para o desgaste nesta área, as suas implicações e sugestões de medidas eficazes de combate e prevenção do desgaste, de modo a melhorar consideravelmente o bem-estar dos consultores, promover a produtividade da organizações e satisfação dos clientes. Assim, adotou-se uma abordagem qualitativa, realizando entrevistas a um total de sete consultores distribuídos por três setores distintos da consultoria: recursos humanos, gestão empresarial e tecnologias de informação. Os resultados revelam que a pressão por resultados colocada pelas chefias é o principal fator de desgaste em todos os tipos de consultoria analisados, no entanto, foram observadas também algumas variações no que diz respeito aos fatores de desgaste. A promoção de um maior equilíbrio entre a vida pessoal e profissional foi a sugestão pretendida por todos os entrevistados, só sendo possível através de políticas organizacionais que apoiem o bem-estar dos consultores.Consulting plays a crucial role in the business world, providing fully specialised diagnostics and solutions to meet each client's needs. However, the work dynamics in this sector can be highly demanding and stressful, leading to physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion among consultants, and in recent years there has been an increase in awareness of the adverse effects of burnout in consulting. Considering this scenario, the objective of this study is to understand the factors contributing to burnout in this field, their implications, and suggestions for effective measures to combat and prevent burnout to considerably improve the well-being of consultants, promote the productivity of organisations and client satisfaction. A qualitative approach was adopted, conducting interviews with a total of seven consultants distributed across three distinct sectors of consulting: human resources, business management, and information technology. The results reveal that pressure for results imposed by management is the primary factor contributing to burnout in all types of consulting analysed. However, some variations were also observed regarding the factors contributing to burnout. Promoting a better balance between personal and professional life was the suggested approach by all interviewees, only achievable through organisational policies supporting the well-being of consultants

Liderança intermédia no setor do café : estudo de caso

Este estudo de caso tem como objetivo explorar as lideranças intermédias, numa das maiores empresas do setor de café em Portugal. A pesquisa foi conduzida com base na análise de três líderes intermédios na região de Viseu, a fim de compreender as suas práticas de gestão, estilos de liderança e o impacto que têm nas suas equipas. Para tal, foram utilizadas duas técnicas de recolha de dados: entrevistas aos líderes e questionários às suas respetivas equipas. Os dados qualitativos provenientes das entrevistas aplicadas aos três líderes, foram analisadas através do software NVivo, que permitiu uma análise aprofundada do conteúdo, identificando padrões, palavras e categorias chave. Já os dados quantitativos, recolhidos dos questionários aplicados às três equipas, foram tratados com software estatístico, com o total de dez inquiridos. O estudo revelou e aprofundou informações valiosas sobre a eficácia e os desafios enfrentados pelas lideranças intermédias, contribuindo para uma compreensão mais ampla do seu papel na gestão, especificamente na investigação. Os resultados obtidos permitiram conhecer os estilos de liderança identificados pelos líderes e os identificados pelos elementos da equipa que lideram, o transformacional e transacional. Em específico, nos estilos comportamentais verificaram-se os estilos democrático e autocrático. Também se verificou que a perceção entre o estilo de liderança em conjunto com os fatores pessoais e profissionais dos inquiridos, como a experiência, a idade e o tempo de liderança, no caso, não deixam de relevantes, mesmo sendo semelhantes entres eles. Neste estudo de caso apurou-se que a visão do líder sobre si mesmo coincide na grande maioria dos aspectos analisados com a visão dos seus liderados bem como as devidas competências e responsabilidades, inerentes à função de líder intermédio.This case study aims to explore middle management leadership in one of the largest coffee sector companies in Portugal. The research was conducted by analyzing three middle managers in the Viseu region to understand their management practices, leadership styles, and the impact they have on their teams. Two data collection techniques were used: interviews with the leaders and questionnaires completed by their respective teams. The qualitative data from the interviews with the three leaders were analyzed using NVivo software, enabling an in-depth content analysis to identify patterns, key words, and categories. The quantitative data from the questionnaires applied to the three teams, totaling ten respondents, were processed using statistical software. The study revealed and provided valuable insights into the effectiveness and challenges faced by middle management, contributing to a broader understanding of their role in management, particularly in research contexts. The findings identified leadership styles as perceived by the leaders themselves and by their team members, which included transformational and transactional leadership. Specifically, in behavioral styles, democratic and autocratic styles were observed. It was also found that the perception of leadership style, combined with the respondents' personal and professional factors such as experience, age, and leadership tenure, remains relevant despite their similarities. This case study concluded that the leaders' self-perception aligns in most analyzed aspects with their team members' views, as well as with the competencies and responsibilities inherent to the role of middle management leaders

Bio-based superabsorbent hydrogels for nutrient release

Drought is characterized by a low water precipitation rate, with strong impact on crop productivity, threatening global food production. In this context, the use of soil amendments, such as superabsorbent hydrogels constitute a potential technology for better water use efficiency and higher crop yields. In this work, we synthesised cellulose-based hydrogels, characterized their physical and functional properties, evaluated their impact on the environment, and their potential to be used as a soil amendments. The hydrogel showed pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and conductivity below 10.0 µS cm-1. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed a low intensity peak in the crystallinity region, which was supported by the low crystallinity index (27.3% ± 0.6) verified by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. The swelling capacity reached more than 200 g of water, the hydrogel showed good resistance to osmotic pressure and high thermostability, which favours the application in hot and arid areas. In addition, no potentially hazardous compound was detected, nor was there any adverse effect on soil microorganisms. Further, the hydrogel was found to be safe for use during seed sowing and for promoting seedling development. In the greenhouse pot experiment, the hydrogels showed a significant increase in maize shoot and root biomass, demonstrating their ability to contribute to the overall water holding capacity of the soil, thereby influencing nutrient availability for more efficient plant growth. In conclusion, the superabsorbent hydrogel exhibited promising characteristics for use as a soil amendment, scalability potential and constitutes a sustainable alternative for agricultural applications.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Swarm Mind é uma instalação de arte realizada com um método empírico, tanto nas pesquisas como nas experiências. A colmeia e o tabuleiro conectam-se invisivelmente com o grito dos humanos e o zumbido metálico das abelhas do Antropoceno. As fotografias com o título de Beehive Extension complementam esta ligação de uma forma emocional, conectada com a ansiedade. Através de temas da atualidade e relacionando-os com a natureza, desenvolvi um trabalho caracterizado por experiências visuais. Intentionality toward internationalization through digital platforms

This Thesis delves into the decision-making processes of aspiring entrepreneurs when it comes to international business ventures using digital platforms. By employing a blend of Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) and Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), the goal was to uncover how rational and intuitive thinking, attitudes, perceived norms, and behavioral control influence their entrepreneurial intentions in the realm of internationalization through digital platforms. Upon the analysis of a sample consisting of 79 participants, ranging between the ages of 20 and 32 years old, that we can classify as future entrepreneurs, it became evident that both rational and intuitive thinking significantly shape entrepreneurial aspirations, with intuitive cognition proving particularly influential. Furthermore, fsqca analysis revealed distinct entrepreneurial types based on their cognitive approaches, shedding light on their unique strategies in digital internationalization investment. The theoretical implications of this study emphasize the integration of cognitive decision-making theories into entrepreneurial research, providing valuable insights into how future entrepreneurs navigate global markets using digital platforms. Finally, this study enriches our understanding of entrepreneurial behavior in today's digital landscape, offering stakeholders a framework to foster innovation and drive growth in international digital entrepreneurship.Esta tese explora os processos de tomada de decisão de aspirantes a empreendedores no que diz respeito a empreendimentos internacionais utilizando plataformas digitais. Empregando uma combinação de Modelagem de Equações Estruturais-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) e Análise Comparativa Qualitativa de Conjuntos Fuzzy (fsQCA), o objetivo foi descobrir como o pensamento racional e intuitivo, atitudes, normas percebidas e controlo comportamental influenciam as suas intenções empreendedoras no âmbito da internacionalização através de plataformas digitais. Após a análise de uma amostra composta por 79 participantes, com idades entre os 20 e 32 anos, que podemos classificar como futuros empreendedores, tornou-se evidente que tanto o pensamento racional quanto o intuitivo moldam significativamente as aspirações empreendedoras, sendo a cognição intuitiva particularmente influente.
