Ensuring Security of Personal Data in Library Services Platforms of Academic Libraries in the EU
The purpose of this paper is to outline the risks and issues libraries face when using a next-generation library services platform (LSP) from the perspective of current data protection requirements. By examining the specific legal obligations in the context of LSP, approaches will be considered to achieve compliance and ways of ensuring patrons’ data protection rights.
The methods authors applied in this research observe standard legal research methodology, including analysis of legal practice and comparative legal analysis methods to identify key normative elements of library management system (LMS) or LSP compliance with applicable EU data protection requirements. A systematic overview of personal data processing activities usually performed by library services platforms is given with an overview of risks and possible applicable technical or organizational protection measures
National Repository Infrastructure and Open Access Challenges: research and dataset
The study employs a quantitative research approach, divided into two parts, to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state and future development of repositories in Croatia. The first part analyses quantitative data and repository statistics. To investigate the reasons behind the high percentage of restricted or closed-access objects, a survey was conducted among institutions that primarily deposit such items. The research was conducted in the first half of 2024, with quantitative data collected until May 27, 2024, from official DABAR system analytics - https://dabar.srce.hr/reports/.
An initial quantitative analysis was undertaken to identify repositories within DABAR system with a predominant share of objects under closed or restricted access. This analysis was based on publicly available data detailing the total number of objects in each repository, as well as their respective access conditions.
Following the selection process, an online questionnaire was distributed to repository administrators or editors responsible for the management and policy implementation within these repositories. The survey was distributed using email addresses publicly available on the websites of the individual repositories. The questionnaire itself was created using the free online tool Microsoft Forms.
The data collection period spanned from 23 May 2024 to 12 June 2024, during which a total of 50 completed responses were received, providing a substantial basis for subsequent qualitative and quantitative analysis
Evaluacija sudionika projekata rada mnoštva i istraživanje sudionika projekta HAWaton
Međunarodni standardni identifikator za knjižnice i srodne ustanove – ISIL kôd (International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organizations)
Posterski rad opisuje pravila upotrebe ISIL koda u knjižnicama
National repositories infrastructure – nearly a decade of Croatian experience
Repositories play a crucial role in promoting and implementing the concepts of open science, which is recognized as the foundation of scientific work and research. In response to the challenges of open science and legal obligations, Croatian national institutions (among them the National and University Library in Zagreb) established a joint national infrastructure of digital repositories in 2015 – a place for the storage, long-term preservation, and open access to the scientific output of institutions within the science and higher education system. After nearly a decade of Croatian experience, it is necessary to answer the question – what is the role of repositories today, and are they truly accepted as a means to enhance the openness, reputation and visibility of institutions?
The poster will present the national infrastructure of repositories within the Dabar system – Digital Academic Archives and Repositories, providing an overview of the system's development over the years. Currently, Dabar comprises 172 repositories and over 249 thousand objects, but only slightly more than 50% of the items are in open access. To determine the reasons for the high number of closed items, a questionnaire will be conducted among institutions that primarily store items in restricted or closed access. This research can be examined as a case study for further research on European and global levels. The results can contribute to a better understanding and identification of factors negatively affecting the implementation of open science practices and services, serving as a foundation for more systematic support where needed
Benefits of Citizen Science for Libraries
Participating in collaborative scientific research through citizen science, a component of open science, holds significance for both citizen scientists and professional researchers. Yet, the advantages for those orchestrating citizen science initiatives are often overlooked. Organizers encompass a diverse range, including governmental entities, non-governmental organizations, corporations, universities, and institutions like libraries. For libraries, citizen science holds importance by fostering heightened civic and research interests, promoting scientific publishing, and contributing to overall scientific progress. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the specific ways in which citizen science can benefit libraries and how libraries can effectively utilize citizen science to achieve their goals. The paper is based on a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles that discuss the direct benefits of citizen science on libraries. A list of the main benefits of citizen science for libraries has been compiled from the literature. Additionally, the reasons why it is crucial for libraries to communicate the benefits of citizen science for their operations have been highlighted, particularly in terms of encouraging other libraries to actively engage in citizen science projects
Repozitoriji i upravljanje istraživačkim podacima (online postersko izlaganje)
ostvaruje kontinuitetom u razvoju i prilagodbom novom tehnološkom okruženju. Zakonske odredbe
provedbi takvih inovacija. Uz prihvat rastućih digitalnih sadržaja (e-knjiga, mrežne stranice,
e-serijske publikacije, društvene mreže i dr.), NSK i sama provodi digitalizaciju građe iz domovine i
iseljeništva kako bi zapisane, otisnute, objavljene i na drugi način zabilježene ideje hrvatskih autora
lakše ostvarile put do suvremenih korisnika.National libraries have the task of preserving the national written heritage and this
task is only fully realised if the heritage is made available to researchers, students
and the public for reading, research, learning, entertainment and creative use. The
National and University Library of Zagreb (NSK), guided by the slogan “Transferring
ideas through time”, fulfils the tasks of the central Croatian library through continuity in
development and continuous agile adaptation to the new technological environment. The legal
provisions regulating the field of libraries and librarianship in Croatia also monitor and guide
the libraries towards the necessary changes in a timely manner, and the role of the NSK as the
mother library of the Croatian library system is certainly crucial in the implementation and
coordination of such development steps. In addition to adopting new digital content (e-books,
websites, e-series publications, social networks, etc.), the NSK itself is digitising material from
the homeland and emigrant communities for recording, printing, publishing, etc. the ideas
recorded in the past by Croatian authors have found their way more easily to modern users,
including those of Croatian roots and their friends on distant meridians. NSK’s development
projects are also focused on the development of national infrastructure in the field of cultural
and scientific heritage and the creation of new digital products which ensures the position of
Croatia’s largest library as an innovative leader in the development of digital libraries in Croatia
pointing towards the establishment of the Croatian Digital Library. Further impetus for
cooperation on digitisation of material with libraries and other heritage institutions has been
provided by the project “e-Culture: Digitisation of Cultural Heritage”, implemented by the
Ministry of Culture and Media (2019 - 2023) under the Operational Programme Competitiveness
and Cohesion. Among the new projects of the NSK, it is worth highlighting the establishment of
the digital collection “Word Time Machine - Digital Archive of Croatian Literature” in 2023 as
a space for publishing videos of Croatian writers reading and commenting on their literary
works
