Summary of the interview by Gregory Peek: "David Rey is a San Antonio musician and multi-instrumentalist who has performed in a several hard rock and heavy metal bands over the years. David’s father served in the military which is what brought him to San Antonio 1987 where he encountered Joe Anthony on KISS-FM. He discusses attending concerts in San Antonio including his first in 1987 when Def Leppard play with Tesla at HemisFair arena. Also references rock clubs like Sneakers and the Showcase. David joined the San Antonio Jaycees which was a social organization that hosted La Semana Allegre during Fiesta. David talks about the change in rock genre and formats from the glam rock and hair metal of the late 1980s to grunge and alternative rock of the 1990s. This was felt both on MTV and on the radio, including 99.5 KISS-FM. Talks about the difficulty of local San Antonio bands who were more firmly rooted in traditional rock sound of the 80s to make headway during the 1990s. One exception was a band called Petting Zoo who played in Austin and the early incarnations of the SXSW Music Festival. Rey remembers they had a Jane’s Addiction type sound, which kept with the emerging tastes of the decade. Talks about how there was and continues to be a very strong tradition of local musicianship in San Antonio whose tastes were informed and influence by Joe Anthony and KISS-FM.
