1. IntroductionIn particular, a repdigit that contains only the digit 1 is called a repunit by Beiler［Bei］. The repunit Rk is defined asRk＝10k－19＝111...11．　　　　　　　 k　It is well-known that the following formulas involving repunit numbers hold:  185＋11 ＝142 11885＋1111 ＝1142 1129885＋111111 ＝11142 112409885＋11111111 ＝111142 11235209885＋1111111111 ＝1111142　The formulas involving repunit numbers can also check by using the Computational Algebra System MAGMA［BC］.　Let a, b, c be fixed relatively prime positive integers greater than one. The exponential Diophantine equationax＋by＝cz （1）in positive integers x, y, z has been actively studied by a number of authors.　In 1956, Sierpiński［S1］ showed that the equation 3x＋4y＝5z has only the positive integer solution （x, y, z）＝（2, 2, 2）. （cf. Sierpiński［S2］.） Jeśmanowicz［J］ proved that the only positive integer solution of each of the equations5x＋12y＝13z,  7x＋24y＝25z,9x＋40y＝41z, 11x＋60y＝61zis given by （x, y, z）＝（2, 2, 2）, and conjectured the same for all Pythagorean numbers a, b, c, i.e., positive integers a, b, c satisfying a2＋b2＝c2. This is one of famous unsolved problems in the field of exponential Diophantine equations. This conjecture has been verified to be true in many special cases, but is still unsolved.（cf.［LSS］, ［Mi］, ［SS］, ［T1］, ［T2］, ［TS1］, A note on the exponential Diophantine equationinvolving repunit numbersFaculty of Business, Marketing and Distribution Nakamura Gakuen UniversityYoshiki ShinshoAbstract　In this paper, we consider the exponential Diophantine equation （91R2k＋78Rk＋16）x＋（9R2k＋2Rk）y＝（10Rk＋4）z involving repunit numbers. Then we show that the equation has only the positive integer solution （x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2）.Keywordsexponential Diophantine equation, repunit number, integer solution― 77 ―［TS2］.）　It is known that the number of solutions （x, y, z） of equation （1） is finite, and the upper bound of all solutions can be effectively determined by means of Baker’s method of linear forms in logarithms. In 1993, Scott［Sc］ showed that if c＝2 and c＝p with odd prime, then （1） has at most one and at most two positive integer solutions （x, y, z） except for some cases of （a, b, c）, respectively. In 2016, Scott-Styer［SS］ established that if c is odd, then （1） has at most two positive integer solutions （x, y, z）. 　In this paper, we consider the exponential Diophantine equation ax＋by＝cz involving repunit numbers. Now, we have considered the well-known formula given above as the example, proved it as the exponential Diophantine equation. Our main result is the following: Theorem 1. Let k be a positive integer with Rk≢0 （mod 3）. Then the exponential Diophantine equation（91R2k＋78Rk＋16）x＋（9R2k＋2Rk）y＝（10Rk＋4）z （2）　has only the positive integer solution（x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2）.　This paper is organized as follows. 　In Section 2, we show repunit congruences and repdigit identities, and we also solve the equation （2） when k＝1, 2.　In Sections 3, we use elementary methods to show Theorem 1.2. Lemmas.We first show that Rk satisfies the following properties.Lemma 1. （Repunit congruences）  （i）Rk≡1（mod 5）. （ii）If k≥3, then Rk≡－1（mod 8）.（iii）Rk≡k（mod 3）.（iv）R2k≡0（mod 3）⇔ R2k≡0（mod 7）.Proof.  （i）By definition of Rk, we have9Rk＝10k－1, so Rk≡1（mod 5）. （ii）Since k≥3, we haveRk≡－1（mod 8）.（iii）By definition of Rk, we have9Rk＝10k－1, so Rk≡k（mod 3）.（iv）Hence taking R2k＝102k－19 modulo 7implies that R2k≡0（mod 7）so R2k≡0（mod 3）. □　We next show that Rk has the following identities:Lemma 2. （Repdigit identities）  （i）R2k＝Rk（9Rk＋2）＝9R2k＋2Rk. （ii）（91R2k＋78Rk＋16）＋（9R2k＋2Rk）＝（10Rk＋4）2.Proof.  （i）R2k＝102k－19＝（10k＋1）・10k－19＝Rk（9Rk＋2）＝9R2k＋2Rk. （ii）（10Rk＋4）2－（9R2k＋2Rk）＝（10Rk＋4）（10Rk＋4）－9R2k－2Rk＝100R2k＋80Rk＋16－9R2k－2RkYoshiki Shinsho― 78 ―＝91R2k＋78Rk＋16. □　The following Lemma 3 implies that when k＝1, 2, equation （2） have only the trivial solution （x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2）, respectively.Lemma 3. （k＝1, 2）  （i）The exponential Diophantine equation185x＋11y＝14z （3）has only the positive integer solution（x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2）. （ii）The exponential Diophantine equation11885x＋1111y＝114z （4）has only the positive integer solution（x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2）.Proof.  （i）Since Rk≡1（mod 5）, we obtain0＋1≡4z（mod 5）.This implies that z is even.　Taking equation （3） modulo 4 implies that1＋3y≡0（mod 4）,so y is odd.　Taking equation （3） modulo 3 implies that2x＋2≡1（mod 3）,so x is odd.　Note that 91R2k＋78Rk＋16≡5（mod 8） and 9R2k＋2Rk≡7（mod 8）. It follows from Lemma 3 that1＋3≡6z（mod 8）.We therefore conclude that z＝2, and sox＝1, y＝2 from （3）. （ii）Since Rk≡1（mod 5）, we obtain0＋1≡4z（mod 5）.This implies that z is even.　Taking equation （4） modulo 4 implies that1＋3y≡0（mod 4）,so y is odd.　Taking equation （4） modulo 3 implies that2x＋1≡0（mod 3）,so x is odd.　Note that 91R2k＋78Rk＋16≡5（mod 8） and 9R2k＋2Rk≡7（mod 8）. It follows from Lemma 3 that5＋7≡2z（mod 8）.We therefore conclude that z＝2, and so x＝1, y＝2 from （4）. □3. Proof of Theorem 1.In this section, we give a proof of Theorem 1. Let （x, y, z） be a solution of （2）. Suppose that our assumptions are all satisfied.　We first examine parities of x, y, z. Using our assumptions, we show the following:Lemma 4. Proof.  （i）Since Rk≡1（mod 5）, we obtain0＋1≡4z（mod 5）.This implies that z is even. （ii）Taking equation （2） modulo 4 implies that1＋3y≡0（mod 4）,so y is odd.（iii）If Rk≢0（mod 3）, then taking equation （2） modulo 3 implies that2x≡2（mod 3）,so x is odd. □　If k＝1, then （2） becomes 185x＋11y＝14z, which has only the solution （x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2） from （3）. If k＝2, then （2） becomes 11885x＋1111y＝114z, which has only the solution （x, y, z）＝（1, 1, 2） from （4）. Thus we may suppose that k≥3. Note that 91R2k＋78Rk＋16≡5（mod 8） and 9R2k＋2Rk≡7（mod 8）. It follows from Lemma 4 that5＋7≡2z（mod 8）.We therefore conclude that z＝2, and so x＝1, y＝2 from （2）. This completes the proof of Theorem 1.　Remark.
