Comparative study of policy responses to COVID-19 in LICs in Africa

    Get PDF
This brief assesses the policy responses to COVID-19 among low-income countries (LICs) in Africa. While LICs have adopted expansionary fiscal and monetary policies in the face of economic lockdown, as well as other mitigation strategies, the scale and quality of such responses have been modest compared with those of emerging and middle-income countries. Policy instruments have also varied across countries, in line with the level of development of domestic financial markets and the extent of digital inclusion. Pre-pandemic economic challenges, such as limited fiscal space, high debt levels and inflation, have also contributed to countries’ weak economic responses. External financing has been crucial for LICs’ ability to respond to the pandemic, but is still inadequate given the huge financial gap that exists. As LICs move from the relief to the recovery phase of COVID-19 economic management, a rethinking of economic responses is crucial both to bring about a swift recovery and to minimize the catastrophic impact of COVID-19 on recent developmental gains

Through interviews, workshops, and exhibitions in collaboration with The Support and Self-Awareness Group for People with Cancer, this study has collected diverse personal experiences from survivors of breast cancer and of those receiving treatments, has highlighted the demands during the different stages of cancer treatment, has provided insight on the relationship these women establish with their own bodies and with artifacts they use, and has allowed women to explore strategies to rebuild their self-image and break taboos related to breasts and breast cancer

COVID-19 and its impact on Senegal’s macroeconomic structure

    Get PDF
The spread of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021 has caused high mortality and morbidity rates across the globe. Senegal, along with other developing countries, experienced the weakening of major economic sectors such as tourism, health, agriculture, banking, and transport. This led to the deterioration of the macroeconomic environment – despite fast gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6% over the past five years (2014-2019). As with most sub-Saharan countries, Senegal implemented a series of fiscal policies, and these, along with the new monetary policies of the Central Bank of West African States, aimed to enhance overall economic performance while keeping inflation down and restoring GDP growth
