MOLAS: Royal Opera House 1996 Excavations

    No full text
The large-scale excavation at the site of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, Greater London, was undertaken by the Museum of London Archaeology Service in 1966. The site covered part of the Middle Saxon trading port of Lundenwic which was discovered in London's West End in the mid-1980s. The excavations added greatly to the understanding of this settlement. The archive currently contains texts, comma delimited text files suitable for importing into a database and GIS data. It provides artefact, ecofact and context information. Low-level interpretive groupings of contexts are described and illustrated as part of a GIS

Archaeological Site Index to Radiocarbon Dates from Great Britain and Ireland

    No full text
The 'Archaeological Site Index to Radiocarbon Dates from Great Britain and Ireland' is a database hosted by the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) presenting almost 9000 radiocarbon dates from sites around Great Britain and Ireland. The database originated in 1971 as a printed index compiled by Cherry Lavell and produced by the Council for British Archaeology (CBA). Further supplements appeared until 1982 and in 2001 the resource was further updated. The records held in the database were collected and collated by hand from all available sources (including British and Irish archaeological publications) to produce the most accurate and complete description for each date. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, the database was becoming computerised and supplements from the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit datelist index helped keep the collection reasonably up to date. However, the material held within the database should not be regarded as fully comprehensive. Searchable via date range, grid reference and originator (amongst several other criteria), the database provides results in table form (with the user able to specify what criteria should be included in the results table). A further page is available for each record that presents more detailed information, including the original publication in which the date appeared and a brief report on the subject material. The resource has been updated in 2007, 2008 and 2012 and now contains over 15,000 records

    Historic England NRHE Excavation Index

    No full text
The Excavation Index (EI) is a guide to the archaeological excavations and interventions carried out in England since the earliest days of scientific archaeology, and an index to the location of the excavation archives and finds. It is part of the National Monuments Record, England's heritage archive. The Excavation Index records archaeological events, the majority encompassing excavations, evaluations & watching briefs since 1960, geophysical surveys and fieldwork funded by Historic England & its predecessors. The EI is updated with information from a wide range of published and non-published sources. Trawling of relevant journals, reports and monographs is augmented by direct data exchange with a number of contractors and curators across the country. The Archaeology Data Service holds a regularly updated subset of the full computerised record held at the National Monuments Record. These records form part of the ADS catalogue and may be searched as a set or in parallel with some or all of the ADS collections. The records contain information about the nature and location of the intervention, who carried out the work, the location of any associated physical archives and the National Record of the Historic Environment identifier for the record to help researchers to get more information directly from Historic England
