2019 Research Week Abstract Instructions and Template Posters and Presentations  Research Abstract Instructions Write a concise summary of the key points of your research. This abstract needs to represent your research well as it could be used as part of the judging criteria during the event. Your abstract should contain a strong literature review or introduction to your research topic, hypothesis or research questions, methods, results, and conclusions. You should also include possible implications of your research and future work you see connected with your findings. Your abstract should be a single paragraph double-spaced. Your abstract should be between 200 and 300 words. The second paragraph should address how your research is informed by a Christian worldview. In 250-500 words, describe how your Christian worldview has informed your research design and communication of your results. Mentor(s) and Mentor Email - Dr. Lucinda Spaulding (lsspaulding@liberty.edu) Student name(s) and email(s) – Melissa Hosek (mjhosek@liberty.edu)   Abstract: This paper investigates the research that has been done on Chinese special education. A literature review was conducted to see what research had been done on the influence culture has on special education in China as well as the methods that would be culturally relevant and best meet the needs of those with disabilities in China. Through the investigation, it was found that although a large amount of literature supports known special educational practices as effective, those studies conducted were in western cultures such as the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom. Little research has been done to see whether the practices developed and studied in the western countries are transferable and effective in eastern countries where the cultures have a notable difference such as in China. One key component in most western special education practices is inclusion which emphasizes meeting the needs of the individual. In China, the culture traditionally places a large emphasis on groups as a whole, whether that is a family, friends, school, community or the country, rather than on the individual. This cultural emphasis and its impact on special education has not been properly researched in China and would need to be one of the first thing researched to see where already special educational practices could be implemented in the future and where new practices would need to be developed and studied for cultural relevance and effectiveness.    Christian worldview integration: My Christian worldview has shaped how I conduct research, how I collected information, how I viewed the information I collected, and how I shared the information I gathered. In shaping my methods for conducting research, my worldview was the primary motivation in why I wished to do this research. As Christians, we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ, and education is one method to do that. Finding where education is not fully utilized or developed can help further the spread of the Gospel by meeting a need in an area of lack. I also feel deeply called to become a special educator in China, and I think this research has helped shape me and my understanding of China and its culture. When gathering information, my worldview led me to collect only information from reputable sources and to collect all the information I could, not just what lined up with my ideas, to be honest and transparent in my work. When viewing the information I collected, my worldview influenced my thoughts by giving me the ability to read the information from a Christian worldview and to understand that I do come in with preconceived ideas and that when researching I need to acknowledge that some of my ideas are wrong and be able to read the facts as they are instead of trying to bend them to fit my narrative. The influence my worldview has in how I share my information is that I believe I, as a Christian, need to be willing to share the information I find to help those around me, and to share my information in the most honest way possible. I think sharing my research could be very helpful with, in the future, improving educational practices. I think my worldview was a large motivator in my conducting my research because, being the hands and feet of Christ, I need to be well equipped to meet the needs of those I encounter, and this research has helped me become more knowledgeable about China and its practices with regards to those with disabilities.
