How do fac-ulty support students who beginto fail? Everyone at Arrupe Col-lege has to believe in the students,in the staff, in the future, in themission. The students too teachthe teachers a lot about life in thestruggles they face.        All of Jesuit higher educationis filled with people who believe,who work hard, who achieve themission. This is in no way uniqueto Arrupe College. All the schoolsbuilt on founders’ hopes anddreams. But at Arrupe the stakesare high and alternatives few forthese very fortunate students. Ar-rupe College has already made adifference and is a worthy addi-tion to higher education in the Je-suit tradition. Father Katsourosand his collaborators in missionhave made a magnificent start.Come to Believe is a powerful testi-mony to what Jesuit educationcan achieve.Emmaus: The Nature of theWay is a portrait of faith. Itrepresents the dream, thetalent, and the hard work ofits creator, Chris Yates, a2016 graduate of LoyolaMarymount University. Itportrays 22 Jesuits who arepart of that university.        During his collegeyears Chris had a lot of con-tact with Jesuits there, buthe knew that many of hisfellow students did not. Sohe wanted to make the Je-suits better known.         With the support ofthe Jesuit community rec-tor, Fr. Alan F. Deck, S.J.,Chris sent surveys to theJesuits and began to takeformal and informal por-traits of them. He put to-gether a team that saw thisvast project through to astunning product that waspublished last May. Chris,meanwhile, after graduating fromLMU, worked for a year as a volun-teer for the Archdiocese of Chicago.        Chris structured his portraitsaround the gospel story of Jesus meet-ing two disciples late on Easter after-noon as they made their way fromJerusalem to their home in Emmaus.         After a title line reﬂecting thegospel account (for example “TheRoad” or “Was It Not Necessary Thatthe Messiah Must Suﬀer?”), he gives acouple of autobiographical sketchestaken from the surveys the Jesuitssubmitted and then pres-ents a formal portrait ofthose who provided thesesketches. After this a seriesof less formal portraits ofthese men appears, show-ing them gardening, cook-ing, playing drums, workingon a computer, just relaxing.      The photography is stun-ning, and the whole book isa work of art. It is alsoclearly a labor of love.      Chris graduated fromLMU with a major in screen-writing and a minor in ar-chaeology. During his timein college, “he understoodfor the ﬁrst time that hispassion for his faith and hiscreativity could go hand inhand,” as he explains to-wards the end of the book.After his volunteer year inChicago, he returns to LosAngeles to work as “a pro-fessional photographer andcreator to represent those who areon the margins.” (Conversations is planning to have afuller article by Chris in a future issue.Check the book out at: www.natureoftheway.org )Book Notice1: Book Notice of <em>Emmaus: The Nature of the Way</em> by Chris YaPublished by e-Publications@Marquette, 2017
