    Threshold levels and the realization of a group benefit

    This paper considers a voluntary contribution threshold game in which a group benefit is realized only if the number of contributors at least reaches a threshold level, and analyzes the effect of the threshold level on the likelihood that the group benefit is realized. Changes in the threshold level in interior symmetric equilibrium have two effects on the likelihood, the direct, threshold effect and the indirect, strategic effect. While the direct effect is always negative, the indirect effect can be either positive or negative. And the net effect is not necessarily negative.direct effect

    Perception threshold and electrode position for spinal cord stimulation

    The perception threshold for epidural spinal cord stimulation in chronic pain management was analyzed on 3923 testing data obtained from 136 implanted patients. The initial areas of paresthesiae due to stimulation were recorded and reported as the stimulation map according to the location of electrodes. Measurement of dorsal thickness of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) layer was obtained from 26 subjects using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results indicate that the perception threshold is a function of the spinal level of the implanted electrodes, of the mediolateral position in the spinal canal and the contact separation of electrode. Differences in perception threshold at various vertebral levels are mainly due to varying depths of the dorsal CSF layer. The medially placed electrodes caudal to the mid-cervical levels have a higher perception threshold than more laterally placed ones. The electrodes at high and mid-cervical levels, however, have a smaller perception threshold if placed medially. The information obtained from this investigation has important implications for the design of a new-generation stimulation system and clinical application to maximize the longevity of the power source

    Lower and upper bounds for the capacity of multilevel threshold elements are estimated, using two essentially different enumeration techniques. It is demonstrated that the exact number of multilevel threshold functions depends strongly on the relative topology of the input set. The results correct a previously published estimate and indicate that adding threshold levels enhances the capacity more than adding variables

    Seven benzimidazole pesticides combined at sub-threshold levels induce micronuclei in vitro

Considering the similarities in their mechanisms of action (inhibition of microtubule assembly by binding to the colchicine-binding site on tubulin monomers), combination effects according to the principles of concentration addition might occur. If so, it is to be expected that several benzimidazoles contribute to micronucleus formation even when each single one is present at or below threshold levels. This would have profound implications for risk assessment, but the idea has never been tested rigorously. To fill this gap, we analysed micronucleus frequencies for seven benzimidazoles, including the fungicide benomyl, its metabolite carbendazim, the anthelmintics albendazole, albendazole oxide, flubendazole, mebendazole and oxibendazole. Thiabendazole was also tested but was inactive. We used the cytochalasin-blocked micronucleus assay with CHO-K1 cells according to OECD guidelines, and employed an automated micronucleus scoring system based on image analysis to establish quantitative concentration–response relationships for the seven active benzimidazoles. Based on this information, we predicted additive combination effects for a mixture of the seven benzimidazoles by using the concepts of concentration addition and independent action. The observed effects of the mixture agreed very well with those predicted by concentration addition. Independent action underestimated the observed combined effects by a large margin. With a mixture that combined all benzimidazoles at their estimated threshold concentrations for micronucleus induction, micronucleus frequencies of ~15.5% were observed, correctly anticipated by concentration addition. On the basis of independent action, this mixture was expected to produce no effects. Our data provide convincing evidence that concentration addition is applicable to combinations of benzimidazoles that form micronuclei by disrupting microtubule polymerisation. They present a rationale for grouping these chemicals together for the purpose of cumulative risk assessment.United Kingdom Food Standards Agenc

    Comment on ''Properties of highly clustered networks"

    We consider a procedure for generating clustered networks previously reported by Newman [Phys. Rev. E 68, 026121 (2003)]. In the same study, clustered networks generated according to the proposed model have been reported to have a lower epidemic threshold under susceptible-infective-recovered-type network epidemic dynamics. By rewiring networks generated by this model, such that the degree distribution is conserved, we show that the lower epidemic threshold can be closely reproduced by rewired networks with close to zero clustering. The reported lower epidemic threshold can be explained by different degree distributions observed in the networks corresponding to different levels of clustering. Clustering results in networks with high levels of heterogeneity in node degree, a higher proportion of nodes with zero connectivity, and links concentrated within highly interconnected components of small size. Hence, networks generated by this model differ in both clustering and degree distribution, and the lower epidemic threshold is not explained by clustering alone

    Extreme Value Theory Approach to Simultaneous Monitoring and Thresholding of Multiple Risk Indicators

    Risk assessments often encounter extreme settings with very few or no occurrences in reality.Inferences about risk indicators in such settings face the problem of insufficient data.Extreme value theory is particularly well suited for handling this type of problems.This paper uses a multivariate extreme value theory approach to establish thresholds for signaling levels of risk in the context of simultaneous monitoring of multiple risk indicators.The proposed threshold system is well justified in terms of extreme multivariate quantiles, and its sample estimator is shown to be consistent.As an illustration, the proposed approach is applied to developing a threshold system for monitoring airline performance measures.This threshold system assigns different risk levels to observed airline performance measures.In particular, it divides the sample space into regions with increasing levels of risk.Moreover, in the univariate case, such a thresholding technique can be used to determine a suitable cut-off point on a runway for holding short of landing aircrafts.This cut-off point is chosen to ensure a certain required level of safety when allowing simultaneous operations on two intersecting runways in order to ease air traffic congestion.Extreme value theory;extreme quantile;multiple risk indicators;multivariate quantile;rare event;statistics of extremes;threshold system

    Emergence of Gapped Bulk and Metallic Side Walls in the Zeroth Landau level in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

    Recent transport experiments have revealed the activation of longitudinal magnetoresistance of Weyl semimetals in the quantum limit, suggesting the breakdown of chiral anomaly in a strong magnetic field. Here we provide a general mechanism for gapping the zeroth chiral Landau levels applicable for both Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Our result shows that the zeroth Landau levels anticross when the magnetic axis is perpendicular to the Dirac/Weyl node separation and when the inverse magnetic length lB1l_B^{-1} is comparable to the node separation scale Δk\Delta k. The induced bulk gap increases rapidly beyond a threshold field in Weyl semimetals, but has no threshold and is non-monotonic in Dirac systems due to the crossover between lB1>Δkl_B^{-1}>\Delta k and lB1<Δkl_B^{-1}<\Delta k regions. We also find that the Dirac and possibly Weyl systems host counterpropagating edge states between the zeroth Landau levels, leading to a state with metallic side walls and zero Hall conductance.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Coupled-channel model for charmonium levels and an option for X(3872)

    The effects of charmed meson loops on the spectrum of charmonium are considered, with special attention paid to the levels above open-charm threshold. It is found that the coupling to charmed mesons generates a structure at the D \bar{D}* threshold in the 1++ partial wave.     Local Fault-tolerant Quantum Computation

    We analyze and study the effects of locality on the fault-tolerance threshold for quantum computation. We analytically estimate how the threshold will depend on a scale parameter r which estimates the scale-up in the size of the circuit due to encoding. We carry out a detailed semi-numerical threshold analysis for concatenated coding using the 7-qubit CSS code in the local and `nonlocal' setting. First, we find that the threshold in the local model for the [[7,1,3]] code has a 1/r dependence, which is in correspondence with our analytical estimate. Second, the threshold, beyond the 1/r dependence, does not depend too strongly on the noise levels for transporting qubits. Beyond these results, we find that it is important to look at more than one level of concatenation in order to estimate the threshold and that it may be beneficial in certain places, like in the transportation of qubits, to do error correction only infrequently.Comment: REVTeX, 44 pages, 19 figures, to appear in Physical Review
