In hierdie artikel word 'n poging aangewend om die konflik tussen Darwin se teorie van evolusie en die Christelike leerstelling van 'n Goddelike skepping uit die weg te ruim. Om die konflik goed te verstaan, word 'n kort uiteensetting gegee van die wyse waarop Christene die implikasies van die teorie van evolusie vir hul leerstelling van 'n Goddelike skepping ingesien het. Die diverse reaksies van teoloé hierop sal kortliks geskets word, waarna 'n analise van die redes vir hierdie konflik verskaf sal word, gebaseer op 'n leidraad van Hans Kiing, 'n Duitse teoloog. Die standpunt sal beredeneer word dat d it 'n spesifieke interpretasie van die Christendom was, gerugsteun deur 'n filosofies-biologiese teorie, wat verdedig is en nie die sentrale aspekte van die Christendom self nie. Laastens sal gevra word of die konflik u it die weg geruim kan word en die positiewe antwoord wat hierop gegee word, stel dat 'n korrekte interpretasie van die Bybelse skeppingsleer 'n teorie van evolusie kan akkommodeer wat geregverdigde aansprake op wetenskaplike geldigheid maak

Die ondraaglike groenheid van teorie1

This article is a demonstration of the unbearable greenness of theory. The first part explores the meaning of green (in Afrikaans) as a demonstration of what intertextuality means. The second part outlines the resistance to theory. Against this resistance it is argued that theory is engaged (inter alia) in reading and interpreting difficult texts and contributing to solving the universal problem of interpretation. As an example the controversial singing of "Die Stem" at a rugby test is analyzed. The third part argues for the fecundity of theory by outlining the value of narrative theory for other disciplines and by a literary analysis of the science policy and the motto of the PU for CHE and a love poem by B. Breytenbach. A short programmatic view of the future of literary theory at the PU for CHE concludes the article

Vztah mezi principy a modely v sémantickém pojetí vědeckých teorií

Zkoumání je založeno na reflexi sémantického pojetí vědec- kých teorií Ronalda Giera. Gierova východiska a závěry jsou podrobeny kritice, na jejímž základě autor buduje svou vlastní variantu modelově založeného pojetí teorií. Hlavním cílem příspěvku je konceptualizace vztahu mezi principy a modely s důrazem na to, že tento vztah může zakládat dynamiku teorie, respektive posloupnosti teorií. Souhrnně bude v příspěvku prověřována řada tezí: 1) Základními prvky teorie jsou modely, které slouží jako nosiče principů. 2) Modely hrají rozhodující roli při pojmové výstavbě teorie. 3) Modely artikulací principů odhalují poznatky, které ze samotných principů neplynou. 4) Principy mohou být někdy souhrnně definovány až poté, co existuje odpovídající množina modelů. 5) Nová teorie nastoupí ve chvíli, kdy je cluster nových modelů dostatečně komplexní a když si vědecké společenství ujasní, že tento nový cluster je založen na určité množině nových principů

Systémový charakter modelování možných trendů důsledků klimatických změn nástroji geografických informačních systémů

Základem příspěvku je aplikace tezí tzv. konstruktivní teorie systémů na model predikce pravděpodobného trendu důsledků globálních klimatických změn na vegetační kryt území ČR. Metodickým východiskem, podrobněji rozvedeném v první části příspěvku, je bývalý Integrovaný informační systém o území ISÚ a jeho subsystém Ekologická banka dat ISÚ. Samotný model predikce, jehož obdobně koncipovaná systémová charakteristika je předmětem druhé části, je realizován v prostředí technologie geografických informačních systémů. Základem systémových vazeb modelu je časoprostorová komparace klimatických podmínek a vlastností vegetačního krytu území. Model byl využit pro analýzu dat vhodnosti pěstování vybraných dřevin

It is argued in this paper that the development of mathematics has had a profound effect upon the research paradigms of economics. Economists ’ early attempts to imitate the natural sciences have led them to an increasing quantification of their own science, with the consequence that recent developments in mathematics, such as the Theory of Chaos and the Theory of ('atastrophe, together with the implications from quantum physics, are causing a paradigm shift in economics. This paradigm shift has been turning away from a positivistic view of economic science towards a normative one a view where there seems to he greater acceptance of the principle that science cannot be free from value judgements. Tor the Christian economist these developments are to be welcomed. In the light of this, the paper concludes with a Scriptural perspective on the rote of mathematics in economics

Don quijote, Christelike geloof en natuurwetenskap 1

The story about Don Qulchote and the windmills is used in this article as an analogy to typify the debates that have taken place in history between natural science and representatives of Christian religion. The analogy is tested on debates that took place around Galileo. Darwin, Newton, Cuvier and the Big Bang theory. The analogy matches these debates quite well and this Is explained by the view that scientific claims to knowledge, and claims to knowledge based on Christian faith, belong to different categories and are thus not concurrents for the same truth. Gilbert Ryle's criticism on Descartes' mind-body dualism is used here to strengthen this argument. The article is concluded by pointing out in what ways one can engage in a meaningful debate on the nature of the relationship between science and Christian religion
