Improving automation standards via semantic modelling: Application to ISA88
Standardization is essential for automation. Extensibility, scalability, and reusability are important features for automation software that rely in the efficient modelling of the addressed systems. The work presented here is from the ongoing development of a methodology for semi-automatic ontology construction methodology from technical documents. The main aim of this work is to systematically check the consistency of technical documents and support the improvement of technical document consistency. The formalization of conceptual models and the subsequent writing of technical standards are simultaneously analyzed, and guidelines proposed for application to future technical standards. Three paradigms are discussed for the development of domain ontologies from technical documents, starting from the current state of the art, continuing with the intermediate method presented and used in this paper, and ending with the suggested paradigm for the future. The ISA88 Standard is taken as a representative case study. Linguistic techniques from the semi-automatic ontology construction methodology is applied to the ISA88 Standard and different modelling and standardization aspects that are worth sharing with the automation community is addressed. Technical advantages for weak value amplification: When less is more
The technical merits of weak value amplification techniques are analyzed. We
consider models of several different types of technical noise in an optical
context and show that weak value amplification techniques (which only use a
small fraction of the photons) compare favorably with standard techniques
(which uses all of them). Using the Fisher information metric, we demonstrate
that weak value techniques can put all of the Fisher information about the
detected parameter into a small portion of the events and show how this fact
alone gives technical advantages. We go on to consider a time correlated noise
model, and find that a Fisher information analysis indicates that while the
standard method can have much larger information about the detected parameter
than the postselected technique. However, the estimator needed to gather the
information is technically difficult to implement, showing that the inefficient
(but practical) signal-to-noise estimation of the parameter is usually
superior. We also describe other technical advantages unique to imaginary weak
value amplification techniques, focusing on beam deflection measurements. In
this case, we discuss combined noise types (such as detector transverse jitter,
angular beam jitter before the interferometer and turbulence) for which the
interferometric weak value technique gives higher Fisher information over
conventional methods. We go on to calculate the Fisher information of the
recently proposed photon recycling scheme for beam deflection measurements, and
show it further boosts the Fisher information by the inverse postselection
probability relative to the standard measurement case

RATIONAL INCOMPATIBILITY WITH INTERNATIONAL PRODUCT STANDARDS
This paper considers the incentives of firms to conform to an exogenous international product standard. Product standardization enables traditional, price-based international competition. But the existence of redesign costs or network effects creates market frictions that diminish the incentive to standardize if there already exists a different technology in an established market. This leads to multi-attribute competition between products and will generally reduce trade flows. Not only do incumbent firms using a different technology have an incentive to deviate from the international standard, but a host country government that is also concerned for the welfare of consumers who own the old technology has no incentive to enforce the international standard. Indeed, the government may value deviation from the international standard more than the firm does, thereby creating incentives to adopt and enforce technical barriers to trade. Technical Efficiency Evaluation: Naturally Dual!
We provide a dual perspective on technical efficiency evaluation, in two respects. First, we build on the price assumptions implicitly associated with the notion of technical efficiency in a general equilibrium framework to characterize a set of appropriate references to be used in the technical efficiency evaluation of an input-output vector. Some existing evaluation methods always select an element of this set, but other methods fail to do so. Second, the above framework leads us to assert that a well-grounded measure of technical efficiency is naturally decomposable. One part refers to technical efficiency as captured by the classical Debreu-Farrell measure. The other part refers to technical efficiency resulting from the “implicit allocative efficiency” or “mix efficiency” of the evaluated vector. We present both a quantity-based distance measure and its price-based equivalent to evaluate this complementary dimension of technical efficiency. This generalized perspective encompasses the standard Debreu-Farrell framework for technical efficiency evaluation, and makes it fully consistent with the well-established Koopmans efficiency notion.
