[Excerpt] Two years ago Taylor Forge, a subsidiary of Gulf + Western, I closed. I had worked there for almost eight years as a production I machinist, and I was Grievance Chairman of United Steelworkers Local 8787. During the last two years before the doors shut, G + W I had demanded concessions as a trade-off for the possibility of job security. By that time, through our own research, we knew we were victims of G + W\u27s milking strategy. Concessions wouldn\u27t have saved jobs. They would have just increased the demoralization and financial strain on our members as the place went down. We didn\u27t grant concessions. The factory died department by department and order by order, led by a smart-ass company accountant who was hated by his own management team as much as by the workers. It was common to hear on the floor, as workers watched the source of their income and pride collapse, We could run this better ourselves without them. When you looked at the probable 20% profit rate that G + W expected from Taylor Forge, the policy for maintenance and inventory geared to draining rather than maintaining, the enormous morale problems, and the incredible mismanagement contrasted to the skill,commitment and; knowledge of a veteran work force—workers\u27 capacity to run it better wasn\u27t an idea that was out of the question. Certainly difficult, but not impossible. But this was an option that neither my local nor myself knew much about at the time

Feeding behaviour of larval European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) in relation to temperature and prey density

The feeding behaviour of larval European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) was analysed in relation to temperature and prey density under controlled laboratory conditions with the aim to assess the ability of larval fish to change the feeding tactic as a response to environmental changes. Larvae were acclimated for 20 days at three different temperatures (19, 22 and 26°C), and their feeding behaviour was then video-recorded in experimental trials, at two prey densities, consisting of swarms of 400/l and 1440/l Artemia nauplii. Results showed that there was a significant effect of the interaction between temperature and prey density on the proportion of swimming activity that was reduced at the high temperature-high prey density combination. This suggested a switching in the larval feeding behaviour from an active to an ambush tactic, when the temperature reached 26°C and the prey density was 1440 /l Artemia nauplii. These results are consistent with the current literature on fish larval behaviour in showing that the foraging tactic can be modulated by the interaction of different abiotic and biotic factors characterising the rearing environment

Cosmic-ray composition with TACTIC telescope using Fractal and Wavelet Analysis

A preliminary flux estimate of various cosmic-ray constituents based on the atmospheric Cerenkov light flux of extensive air showers using fractal and wavelet analysis approach is proposed. Using a Monte-Carlo simulated database of Cerenkov images recorded by the TACTIC telescope, we show that one of the wavelet parameters (wavelet dimension B6) provides ? 90% segregation of the simulated events in terms of the primary mass. We use these results to get a preliminary estimate of primary flux for various cosmic-ray primaries above 5 TeV energy. The simulation based flux estimates of the primary mass as recorded by the TACTIC telescope are in good agreement with the experimentally determined values.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; Volume 38, October 2012,Astroparticle Physic
