    Measurement of surface velocity fields

    A new technique for measuring surface velocity fields is briefly described. It determines the surface velocity vector as a function of location and time by the analysis of thermal fluctuations of the surface profile in a small domain around the point of interest.     The leading idea of this work is to continuously retrieve glaciers surface velocity through SAR imagery, in particular using the amplitude data from the new ESA satellite sensor Sentinel-1 imagery. These imagery key aspects are the free access policy, the very short revisit time (down to 6 days with the launch of the Sentinel-1B satellite) and the high amplitude resolution (up to 5 m). In order to verify the reliability of the proposed approach, a first experiment has been performed using Sentinel-1 imagery acquired over the Karakoram mountain range (North Pakistan) and Baltoro and other three glaciers have been investigated. During this study, a stack of 11 images acquired in the period from October 2014 to September 2015 has been used in order to investigate the potentialities of the Sentinel-1 SAR sensor to retrieve the glacier surface velocity every month. The aim of this test was to measure the glacier surface velocity between each subsequent pair, in order to produce a time series of the surface velocity fields along the investigated period. The necessary co-registration procedure between the images has been performed and subsequently the glaciers areas have been sampled using a regular grid with a 250 Ă— 250 meters posting. Finally the surface velocity field has been estimated, for each image pair, using a template matching procedure, and an outlier filtering procedure based on the signal to noise ratio values has been applied, in order to exclude from the analysis unreliable points. The achieved velocity values range from 10 to 25 meters/month and they are coherent to those obtained in previous studies carried out on the same glaciers and the results highlight that it is possible to have a continuous update of the glacier surface velocity field through free Sentinel-1 imagery, that could be very useful to investigate the seasonal effects on the glaciers fluid-dynamics

    Modelling and characterization of cell collapse in aluminium foams during dynamic loading

    Plate-impact experiments have been conducted to investigate the elastic–plastic behaviour of shock wave propagation and pore collapse mechanisms of closed-cell aluminium foams. FE modelling using a meso-scale approach has been carried out with the FE software ABAQUS/Explicit. A micro-computed tomography-based foam geometry has been developed and microstructural changes with time have been investigated to explore the effects of wave propagation. Special attention has been given to the pore collapse mechanism. The effect of velocity variations on deformation has been elucidated with three different impact conditions using the plate-impact method. Free surface velocity (ufs) was measured on the rear of the sample to understand the evolution of the compaction. At low impact velocities, the free-surface velocity increased gradually, whereas an abrupt rise of free-surface velocity was found at an impact velocity of 845 m/s with a copper flyer-plate which correlates with the appearance of shock. A good correlation was found between experimental results and FE predictions

    Determining the Shallow Surface Velocity at the Apollo 17 Landing Site

    Many studies have been performed to determine the shallow surface velocity model at the Apollo 17 landing site. The Lunar Seismic Profiling Experiment (LSPE) had both an active component with eight explosive packages (EPs) and a passive experiment collecting data at various time intervals. Using the eight EPs, the initial shallow surface velocity model was determined to be 250 m/s in the first layer of depth 248 m, 1200 m/s with a depth of 927 m in the second layer, and 4000 m/s down to a depth of 2 km in the third layer. Have performed variations on this study to produce new velocity models shown. Recent studies have also been reanalyzing the passive LSPE data and have found three different thermal moonquake event types occurring at different times within the lunar day. The current goal of the project is to collocate the thermal moonquakes to physical surface features to determine the breakdown of lunar rocks. However, to locate shallow surface events, an accurate velocity model is needed. Presented a thermal moonquake location algorithm using first order approximation, including surface events only. To improve these approximations, a shallow surface velocity is needed

    The effect of surfactants on expanding free surfaces

    This paper develops a systematic theory for the flow observed in the so-called ``overflowing cylinder'' experiment. The basic phenomenon to be explained is the order of magnitude increase in the surface velocity of a slowly overflowing beaker of water that is caused by the addition of a small amount of soluble surfactant. We perform analyses of (i) an inviscid bulk flow in which diffusion is negligible, (ii) a hydrodynamic boundary layer in which viscous effects become important, (iii) a diffusive boundary layer where diffusion is significant, and by matching these together arrive at a coupled problem for the liquid velocity and surfactant concentration. Our model predicts a relation between surface velocity and surface concentration which is in good agreement with experiment. However a degeneracy in the boundary conditions leaves one free parameter which must be taken from experimental data. We suggest an investigation that may resolve this indeterminacy

It reports about an airborne SAR experiment aimed to measure the surface velocity of the river Isar in Bavaria / Germany. The results from two different SAR techniques, including Along Track Interferometry (ATI) show good correspondence. Finally suggestions for further studies are given

    Theoretical surface velocity distributions on acoustic splitter geometries for an engine inlet

    The potential-flow velocity distributions on several splitter geometries in an engine inlet and their variation with different splitter leading-edge shapes and distances from the inlet highlight were analyzed. The velocity distributions on the inner and outer surfaces of the splitters are presented for low-speed and cruise conditions. At zero incidence angle, the splitter with the 4-to-1 elliptical leading edge had lower peak velocities and velocity gradients than the splitter with the 2-to-1 elliptical leading edge. The velocity gradients decreased as the distance from the inlet highlight to the splitter leading edge was increased. For a given distance, the peak velocity on the splitter inner surface increased with increasing inlet incidence angle. At an incidence angle of 50 deg, the velocity level and gradients on the inner surface of the splitter in the forward position were sufficiently severe to suggest local separation
