Minimal Walking Technicolor: Set Up for Collider Physics

    Get PDF
Different theoretical and phenomenological aspects of the Minimal and Nonminimal Walking Technicolor theories have recently been studied. The goal here is to make the models ready for collider phenomenology. We do this by constructing the low energy effective theory containing scalars, pseudoscalars, vector mesons and other fields predicted by the minimal walking theory. We construct their self-interactions and interactions with standard model fields. Using the Weinberg sum rules, opportunely modified to take into account the walking behavior of the underlying gauge theory, we find interesting relations for the spin-one spectrum. We derive the electroweak parameters using the newly constructed effective theory and compare the results with the underlying gauge theory. Our analysis is sufficiently general such that the resulting model can be used to represent a generic walking technicolor theory not at odds with precision data.Comment: 42 pages, 3 figures. How to set up and manage a good compost

    Get PDF
This teaching document explains how good compost is made. Compost is the solid, crumble, brownish to dark brown product of an aerobic degradation of biogenic waste or organic material. There are huge numbers of microorganisms working under constant access of air (oxygen) and with sufficient moisture in the material mix. There is not only degradation, but also formation of new compounds. Compost has to be treated like a living organism. A healthy compost can bring many advantages to the soil and to the plants, but an unhealthycompost can bring disadvantages for plant growth

Infrared finite coupling in Sudakov resummation: the precise set-up

    Get PDF
I show that Sudakov resummation takes a transparent form if one deals with the second logarithmic derivative of the short distance coefficient functions for deep inelastic scattering and the Drell-Yan process. A uniquely defined Sudakov exponent emerges, and the constant terms not included in the exponent are conjectured to be given by the second logarithmic derivative of the massless quark form factor. The precise framework for the implementation of the dispersive approach to power corrections is set-up, yielding results in agreement with infrared renormalon expectations, but which are not tied to the single (dressed) gluon exchange approximation. Indications for a Banks-Zaks type of perturbative fixed point in the Sudakov effective coupling at low N_f are pointed out. Existence of a fixed point in the Sudakov coupling is argued to imply its universality.Comment: 5 pages, improved version of hep-ph/0606033, new result on universality of power corrections; version 2: added material, comments and references (to appear in Physical Review D (Rapid Communication)); version 3: a few misprints corrected, one reference added (journal version

Spontaneous spiking in an autaptic Hodgkin-Huxley set up

The effect of intrinsic channel noise is investigated for the dynamic response of a neuronal cell with a delayed feedback loop. The loop is based on the so-called autapse phenomenon in which dendrites establish not only connections to neighboring cells but as well to its own axon. The biophysical modeling is achieved in terms of a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model containing such a built in delayed feedback. The fluctuations stem from intrinsic channel noise, being caused by the stochastic nature of the gating dynamics of ion channels. The influence of the delayed stimulus is systematically analyzed with respect to the coupling parameter and the delay time in terms of the interspike interval histograms and the average interspike interval. The delayed feedback manifests itself in the occurrence of bursting and a rich multimodal interspike interval distribution, exhibiting a delay-induced reduction of the spontaneous spiking activity at characteristic frequencies. Moreover, a specific frequency-locking mechanism is detected for the mean interspike interval.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

Revisiting the Hanbury Brown-Twiss set-up for fractional statistics

The Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiment has proved to be an effective means of probing statistics of particles. Here, in a set-up involving edge-state quasiparticles in a fractional quantum Hall system, we show that a variant of the experiment composed of two sources and two sinks can be used to unearth fractional statistics. We find a clear cut signature of the statistics in the equal-time current-current correlation function for quasiparticle currents emerging from the two sources and collected at the sinks.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Analysing Institutional Set-up of Forest Management in Pakistan

    Get PDF
This study analyses the institutional set-up of forest management in Pakistan, focusing on the North West Frontier Province, which houses 40 percent of the total forestlands. These areas have faced significant deforestation in the past. It is feared that if nothing is done to check this process, these forests will soon disappear. The study argues for the Property Rights School of thought that the roots of environmental problems are to be traced to inadequate and ill-defined property institutions. The study develops a normative criterion, describing the conditions that are essential for optimal utilisation and conservation of a resource, to be used in assessing the present situation. The analysis indicates that there are problems in the ownership structure, in the enforcement of property rules, as well as in the management system. It is concluded that the present institutional set-up is inappropriate to achieve the objective of forest conservation, and changes in this set-up are suggested. The study puts forward ‘collective management’ as an alternative institutional set-up.Forests, Institutions, Property Rights
