    The aim of the present work was to study the physical characteristics of swamp buffalo population in Kampar sub district, Riau province. Thirty buffalos which were distributed in 5 villages (Kampar, Padang Mutung, Pulau Rambai, Panyasauan, and Batu Belah) were selected by Multi Stage Stratified Cluster Purposive Sampling Method. The selected animals which were consisted of 15 males and 15 females were observed for physical performance and measured for some body parameters. Physical performances observed and body parameters measured included: horn form; color of hair, skin and foot: form of foot and udder; body length, thorax circle, shoulder high, shoulder circle, thorax high and scrotum circle. The quantitative data were tabulated for calculation of means and standard deviation. It was found that about 83,3 % of buffalo population had horn with wider form, 72,3 % hair color of blackish grey, 61,2 % skin color of blackish gray, 100 % foot color of grey, 100 % foot form of well built foot and 100 % udder form of symmetric. The body measurement data reflected that the body development of the buffalo in Kampar closely related to their original population in India

    The domestic beef cattle producers have supplied only 70 percent of the national need. Demand of the beef cattle has not been accompanied by an increasing of supply response. One of the major problems in beef cattle farming is its low productivity that might be caused by its low efficiency of input use. Therefore, this study aims are (1) to estimate the factors that influence the production of beef cattle fattening, (2) to analyze the level of technical efficiency of beef cattle fattening. The stochastic production frontier is used to estimate production function. The results showed that quantity of concentrate, dummy of cattle\u27s age, and dummy of livestock ownership significantly influence production. The average value of the farm technical efficiency is 0.764 ranging from a minimum of 0.478 to a maximum of 0.996

    Keragaman Genetik Gen Hormon Pertumbuhan (GH|MboII) pada Itik Sikumbang Janti Menggunakan Penciri PCR-RFLP

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keragaman gen hormon pertumbuhan (GH) dengan enzim MboII pada itik Sikumbang Janti dengan menggunakan penciri PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism). Penelitian ini menggunakan sebanyak 50 sampel darah itik Sikumbang Janti. Sampel darah itik Sikumbang Janti diambil melalui vena achilaris sebanyak ± 1 ml. DNA sampel darah diisolasi menggunakan protocol Genomik DNA Purification Kit (Promega). DNA total diamplifikasi menggunakan sepasang primer F : 5\u27-CTG GAG CAG GCA GGA AAA TT-3\u27 dan R: 5\u27-TCC AGG GAC AGT GAC TCA AC-3\u27 yang menghasilkan fragmen exon 1 gen GH dengan panjang 801 bp. Produk amplifikasi direstriksi dengan menggunakan MboII yang mengenali situs pemotongan GAAGA (N/8)↓ . Dari 46 sampel hasil restriksi diperoleh dua posisi. Pada posisi 618 bp dengan genotip yaitu genotip heterozigot (+/-) yang terdiri dari 3 pita (266 bp, 535 bp dan 801 bp), genotip homozigot (+/+) yang terdiri dari 3 pita (109 bp, 266 bp, 426 bp) dan genotip homozigot (-/-) yang terdiri dari 1 pita ( 801) dan terdapat dua tipe alel, yaitu alel (+) dan all (-), all (+) sebesar 0,79 dan alel (-) sebesar 0,21. Sedangkan pada posisi 727 bp memiliki genotip yaitu genotip heterozigot (+/-) yang terdiri dari 3 pita (109 bp, 266 bp, 426 bp), dan genotip homozigot (-/-) yang terdiri dari 3 pita dan terdapat dua tipe alel, yaitu frekuensi alel (+) sebesar 0,61 dan frekuensi alel (-) sebesar 0,39. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa gen GH-MboII memiliki keragamanan yang tinggi serta menunjukkan adanya keseimbangan atau tidak menyimpang dari keseimbangan Hardy Weinberg pada posisi keragaman 618 bp dan pada posisi 727 dalam ketidakseimbangan Hardy Weinberg

    The existence of weeds significantly depressed productivity and quality of herbage. Physically weed controlled by defoliation could be expected to sustain quality and production of herbage, and able to control weeds expansion. The aims of study were to find the effect of interval defoliations of B. humidicola that invited by C. odorata and its effect on concentration of ammonia and volatile fatty acid of B. humidicola herbage (in vitro). The experiment was carried out at Laboratory of Agrostology, Faculty of Animal Science Bogor Agricultural University. In vitro digestibility of herbage was analyzed at Ruminant Nutrition and Feed Chemistry Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Padjadjaran University. Split plot design in time was used in the field experiment. The treatments were nine different planting methods and different defoliation intervals. Defoliation times are divided on the first defoliation and the last defoliation. The results showed that concentration of both ammonia and volatile fatty acid of herbage, which defoliated every 60 days were found significantly higher than those defoliated every 30 days and 90 days. Present and defoliation of C. odorata didn\u27t give significant effect on the concentration of ammonia and volatile fatty acid of B. humidicola herbage

    Kokok Balenggek chicken is a genetic resources from West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, well known as song fowl which has high economic commodity for Minang Kabau tribes. There is an important need to identify bioacoustic marker of Kokok Balenggek song fowl in Solok regency of West Sumatra, Indonesia. This research was aimed to collect basic data of crow characteristics of Kokok Balenggek song fowl. This research was conducted in a captive breeding farm “Agutalok”, Solok Regency, Indonesia. The number of 21 heads of adult male Kokok Balenggek chicken were selected as samples in this project. Song characteristics of Kokok Balenggek chicken was observed using time sampling method. Time observation was performed in three time period; Morning (4-6 a.m), Noon (11 a.m – 1 p.m) and Afternoon (4-6 p.m) for three days consecutively. Some parameters such as number of crows, number of phrase crows, time of crows, duration of crows, and frequency of crows were recorded during the observation. The results showed that the number of crows were ranging 5-11 crows, number of phrases crow were 8-14 phrases, time of crows were happened more frequent in the morning, duration of crows were 3.22 seconds happened frequently at Noon with frequency of crows were 9.39 times/10 minutes

    Probiotics are living microorganisms which controls the balance of pathogenic microbes in the digestive tract of cattle through competitive exclusion mechanism which lately has been widely used as a feed aditive both ruminants and poultry . One type of microbes used in probiotics in poultry livestock is a bacterium of the genus Bacillus . Bacillus coagulans (Lactobacillus sporogenes) had the same function as Lactobacillus sp known as probiotics were able to live in the digestive tract and produced some enzymes and antibiotics required by livestock. The method used in this study is an experimental method with a completely randomized design with 6 treatments administered dose level Basillus coagulans were repeated 5 times. Bacillus coagulans administration dose levels are : Do = Control (Provision of physiological saline without bacteria), DI = 0,6.106 CFU/ml, DII = 42.106 CFU/ml, DIII = 45.107 CFU/ml, DIV = 73.108 CFU/ml, DV = 90.1010 CFU/ml. To determine the effect of treatment used analysis of variance completely randomized design pattern and made a real difference obtained Duncan Range Test. The parameters measured were the number of colonies of Bacillus coagulans in the small intestine, feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion, and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC) of broiler chickens. The results showed the higher dose of Bacillus coagulans were given the better growth of broiler chickens, which at doses 90.1010 CFU /ml chicken rations consume 2679 grams/head with the weight of 1810 g/fish or feed conversion of 1.48 and IOFC 170 g/kg harvest weight or Rp 508 ,-/kg harvest weight. Bacillus coagulans can be used as probiotics to aid digestion and optimal growth of broiler chicken

    A rapid survey was carried out to study the quality of corn produced by farmers in relation to post harvest practices in West Pasaman district. Twenty-six corn farmers, which were located in two sub districts of Kinali and Luhak Nan Duo, were selected and interviewed. Data and information collected including: farm size, farming and post harvest practices, quality of product and marketing. During the survey, samples of corn were collected and then analyzed for moisture, protein and crude fiber content, the rate of corn contaminated by fungi and contaminants. The corn contained crude protein and fiber in normal level of 11.8 % and 2,5 %, respectively. The moisture content was however found relatively high of 21.3 % in average and about 34 % of corn contaminated by fungi. Mainly insufficient handling and drying after harvesting caused the poor quality

    Pembangunan peternakan yang moderen membutuhkan kejelasan dan ketegasan batasan, corak dan dinamika produksinya. Penelitian eksploratif dengan metode survei melalui pendekatan Participative Rural Appraisal selama satu bulan dilakukan untuk mencatat sumberdaya yang dimiliki oleh para peternak berdasarkan kawasan agro-ekologi di Manokwari, yang meliputi Manokwari Utara, Manokwari Selatan, Warmare, Prafi, Masni, Oransbari, Ransiki, Anggi dan Minyambouw. Karakteristik agroekologi dibuat dengan software Microsoft Office VISIO. Matriks sederhana digunakan untuk pengelompokan kriteria komoditi ternak, komoditi pertanian, dan komoditi perikanan dan indikator BioFisik. Sistim peternakan terpadu yang dapat diidentifikasi pada wilayah agroekologi pesisir adalah sistim peternakan sapi berbasis tanaman kelapa (cocobeef) dan tanaman pertanian (crops livestock farming system) serta backyard poultry farming system. Pada daerah dataran rendah sistim yang dikembangkan adalah cattle-palm farming system, pig palm farming system, goat faming system, poultry farming system dan Crops livestock farming system.     Pengaruh Penggunaan Ampas Kecap dalam Ransum terhadap Performa Itik Mojosari

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh dari penggunaan ampas kecap dengan beberapa level pemberian (0%; 5%; 7,5% dan 10%) dalam ransum terhadap performa (konsumsi, produksi telur, konversi ransum) itik Mojosari umur 20 minggu sebanyak 240 ekor dengan bobot badan rata-rata 1.385,0 ± 130,85 gram (CV=9,44%). Bahan pakan yang digunakan yaitu campuran ampas kecap, bekatul, bungkil kedelai, jagung kuning, tepung ikan,pollard dan premix. Perlakuan yang diterapkan yaitu penggunaan ampas kecap 5%, 7,5% dan 10%. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 4 perlakuan dan 6 ulangan. Parameter yang diamati adalah konsumsi ransum, produksi telur, konversi pakan. Data dianalisis dengan analisis ragam atau anova dengan uji F. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ampas kecap tidak berpengaruh terhadap performa itik Mojosari (konsumsi ransum, produksi telur, konversi ransum). Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah penggunaan ampas kecap dapat digunakan dalam ransum itik Mojosari sampai level 10%

    Kombinasi Abu Kayu dan Kapur pada Proses Pengasinan terhadap Karakteristik Fisikokimia dan Nilai Organoleptik Telur Asin

    Proses pengasinan akan mengubah telur itik menjadi telur dengan kandungan mineral, dan organoleptik yang meningkat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah melihat pengaruh kombinasi abu kayu dan kapur pada proses pengasinan terhadap kadar kolesterol, NaCl, kalsium, lemak, air, pH, dan organoleptik telur asin. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan lima perlakuan dan empat ulangan. Perlakuannya adalah kombinasi abu kayu dengan kapur : A (4-0), B (3-1), C (2-2), D (1-3) dan E (0-4). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa kombinasi abu kayu dan kapur berpengaruh terhadap kadar NaCl, kalsium, pH tetapi tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap kadar lemak, air, dan nilai organoleptik. Perlakuan terbaik adalah kombinasi abu kayu dan kapur (2-2) dengan kadar NaCl 3,69±0,47%, kalsium 1,72±0,06%, lemak 13,94±1,28%, air 70,96±0,92%, pH 6,91±0,17, warna 2,16, aroma 2,24 dan rasa 2,20 (suka)
