    Interpersonal and affective dimensions of psychopathic traits in adolescents : development and validation of a self-report instrument

    We report the development and psychometric evaluations of a self-report instrument designed to screen for psychopathic traits among mainstream community adolescents. Tests of item functioning were initially conducted with 26 adolescents. In a second study the new instrument was administered to 150 high school adolescents, 73 of who had school records of suspension for antisocial behavior. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 4-factor structure (Impulsivity α = .73, Self-Centredness α = .70, Callous-Unemotional α = .69, and Manipulativeness α = .83). In a third study involving 328 high school adolescents, 130 with records of suspension for antisocial behaviour, competing measurement models were evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. The superiority of a first-order model represented by four correlated factors that was invariant across gender and age was confirmed. The findings provide researchers and clinicians with a psychometrically strong, self-report instrument and a greater understanding of psychopathic traits in mainstream adolescents

    Physiological cost of walking in those with chronic fatigue syndrome

    <b>Purpose:</b> To examine the physiological cost of walking in subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and a matched control group, walking at their preferred and at matched walking speeds. <b>Methods:</b> Seventeen people with CFS and 17 matched-controls participated in this observational study of physiological cost during over-ground gait. Each subject walked for 5 min at their preferred walking speed (PWS). Controls then walked for 5 min at the same pace of their matched CFS subject. Gait speed and oxygen uptake, gross and net were measured and oxygen uptake was expressed per unit distance ambulated. CFS subjects completed the CFS-Activities and Participation Questionnaire (CFS-APQ). <b>Results:</b> At PWS the CFS group walked at a slower velocity of 0.84 ± 0.21 m s<sup>-1</sup> compared to controls with a velocity of 1.19 ± 0.13 m s<sup>-1</sup> (p < 0.001). At PWS both gross and net oxygen uptake of CFS subjects was significantly less than controls (p = 0.023 and p = 0.025 respectively). At matched-velocity both gross and net physiological cost of gait was greater for CFS subjects than controls (p = 0.048 and p = 0.001, respectively). <b>Conclusion:</b> The physiological cost of walking was significantly greater for people with CFS compared with healthy subjects. The reasons for these higher energy demands for walking in those with CFS have yet to be fully elucidated

    Robust moving horizon H∞ control of discrete time-delayed systems with interval time-varying delays

    In this study, design of a delay-dependent type moving horizon state-feedback control (MHHC) is considered for a class of linear discrete-time system subject to time-varying state delays, norm-bounded uncertainties, and disturbances with bounded energies. The closed-loop robust stability and robust performance problems are considered to overcome the instability and poor disturbance rejection performance due to the existence of parametric uncertainties and time-delay appeared in the system dynamics. Utilizing a discrete-time Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, some delay-dependent linear matrix inequality (LMI) based conditions are provided. It is shown that if one can find a feasible solution set for these LMI conditions iteratively at each step of run-time, then we can construct a control law which guarantees the closed-loop asymptotic stability, maximum disturbance rejection performance, and closed-loop dissipativity in view of the actuator limitations. Two numerical examples with simulations on a nominal and uncertain discrete-time, time-delayed systems, are presented at the end, in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method

    A novel traveling-wave-based method improved by unsupervised learning for fault location of power cables via sheath current monitoring

    In order to improve the practice in maintenance of power cables, this paper proposes a novel traveling-wave-based fault location method improved by unsupervised learning. The improvement mainly lies in the identification of the arrival time of the traveling wave. The proposed approach consists of four steps: (1) The traveling wave associated with the sheath currents of the cables are grouped in a matrix; (2) the use of dimensionality reduction by t-SNE (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding) to reconstruct the matrix features in a low dimension; (3) application of the DBSCAN (density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) clustering to cluster the sample points by the closeness of the sample distribution; (4) the arrival time of the traveling wave can be identified by searching for the maximum slope point of the non-noise cluster with the fewest samples. Simulations and calculations have been carried out for both HV (high voltage) and MV (medium voltage) cables. Results indicate that the arrival time of the traveling wave can be identified for both HV cables and MV cables with/without noise, and the method is suitable with few random time errors of the recorded data. A lab-based experiment was carried out to validate the proposed method and helped to prove the effectiveness of the clustering and the fault location

    Socioeconomic inequalities in health among Swedish adolescents - adding the subjective perspective

    Abstract Background Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health predict future inequalities in adult health. Subjective measures of socioeconomic status (SES) may contribute with an increased understanding of these inequalities. The aim of this study was to investigate socioeconomic health inequalities using both a subjective and an objective measure of SES among Swedish adolescents. Method Cross-sectional HBSC-data from 2002 to 2014 was used with a total sample of 23,088 adolescents aged 11–15 years. Three measures of self-rated health (dependent variables) were assessed: multiple health complaints, life satisfaction and health perception. SES was measured objectively by the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) and subjectively by “perceived family wealth” (independent variables). The trend for health inequalities was investigated descriptively with independent t-tests and the relationship between independent and dependent variables was investigated with multiple logistic regression analysis. Gender, age and survey year was considered as possible confounders. Results Subjective SES was more strongly related to health outcomes than the objective measure (FAS). Also, the relation between FAS and health was weakened and even reversed (for multiple health complaints) when subjective SES was tested simultaneously in regression models (FAS OR: 1.03, CI: 1.00;1.06 and subjective SES OR: 0.66, CI: 0.63;0.68). Conclusions The level of socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health varied depending on which measure that was used to define SES. When focusing on adolescents, the subjective appraisals of SES is important to consider because they seem to provide a stronger tool for identifying inequalities in health for this group. This finding is important for policy makers to consider given the persistence of health inequalities in Sweden and other high-income countries
