An examination of atmospheric lids during COPS

Copyright @ 2009 E.Schweizerbart Science PublishersThe understanding of the nature, origin and prevalence of atmospheric lids is low. There is, therefore, an opportunity to contribute significantly to this area of meteorology - this is the goal of this work. The context for this paper is the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS). The COPS observational campaign, which was undertaken in 2007, was based around the Black Forest region with the aim of improving precipitation forecasts in low mountainous regions. However, the project also represents a great data archive with which to analyse isolated features, such as atmospheric lids. In short, lids play a vital role in the development of convective storms. For example, evidence from the Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP), which was run in the UK in 2005, has shown that lids are important not only in determining whether a storm occurs but also when and where they develop and how intense they are – sometimes, counterintuitively, they appear to increase the intensity. This extended abstract is intended as a brief overview of the previous literature on lids in order to place the work presented at ICAM-2009 in the wider scientific context. This work is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

    RDF Planner (v2.5): Users Guide

This document describes the features of an IDL program, RDFplanner, which can be used interactively to view particle trajectories released from a 3D grid and to print them. It is also possible to visualise emissions tracers on the grid (emissions accumulated along the complete length of each trajectory),the closest approach of trajectories to selected “aircraft bases” and the time at which this occurs. Finally, it is possible to view reverse domain filling reconstructions of chemical fields on the 3D grid (RDF3D)

Land Cover Map 2000 Dataset Information

    Get PDF
LCM2000 is a parcel-based thematic classification of satellite image data covering the United Kingdom. The map updates and upgrades the Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB) 1990. LCM2000 is produced from a computer classification of satellite scenes obtained mainly from the Landsat sensor, as with the earlier LCMGB. However it also covers Northern Ireland, producing for the first time an all-UK dataset. It also incorporates information derived from other ancillary datasets. This document provides further information on the dataset, including details of its specification, the product versions it is available in and descriptions of its habitat classifications

Fixity checking a large climate data archive

It is important not to rely on internal checking mechanisms in hardware systems as these are fallible like everything else. Corruption is rare on the current JASMIN storage system. Future systems needs to be monitored closely if we are to have confidence in their fixity

STFC Centre for Environmental Data Archival (CEDA) Annual Report 2013 (April 2012-March 2013)

    Get PDF
The mission of the Centre for Environmental Archival (CEDA) is to deliver long term curation of scientifically important environmental data at the same time as facilitating the use of data by the environmental science community. CEDA was established by the amalgamation of the activities of two of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) designated data centres: the British Atmospheric Data Centre, and the NERC Earth Observation Data Centre. We are pleased to present here our fourth annual report, covering activities for the 2013 year (April 2012 to March 2013). The report consists of two sections and appendices, the first section broadly providing a summary of activities and some statistics with some short descriptions of some significant activities, and a second section introducing some exemplar projects and activities. The report concludes with additional details of activities such as publications, software maintained etc
