Stephen Seburn U.E. (1758-1828), his wife, Mary Haney (1765-1830), and their babe-in-arms, Nancy, were part of a large movement of Loyalist refugees who traveled on foot from New Jersey and arrived in Niagara in 1787. The family settled on Lot 50 in Stamford Township. Stephen farmed, kept a small amount of livestock, and also kept bees, did some carpentry, and made brooms for Fort Niagara. Like other pioneer families, they supplemented their diet by hunting game and foraging for edible plants. By 1797 the Seburns had obtained a Crown Patent for 100 acres in Stamford Township and 300 acres in Thorold Township and were in sufficient financial circumstances that they had contributed to the building of the first Anglican Church in St. Catharines in 1795. The Seburns had seven children: Nancy Ann (1787-1856), who first married Jacob Wilkerson (1778-1814) who was killed at the Battle of Chippawa, and later married Nathan Hixon (1781- 1856); John (1788-1863) who first married Elizabeth Bessey (1791-1816) and later married Sarah Dolson (1793-1855); Margaret (1790-1872?) who first married George Hoover Junior (1781- 1812) and later married Jacob Vanderburg (1780-1860); Matthew (1791-1859) who married Elizabeth Ann Forbes (1794-1861); William (1793-1843) who married Catherine Lampman (1793- 1865?); Jaocb (1795-1869) who married Hannah Ann Forbes (1799-1883); and Mary (1797-1870) who married John Hudson (1788-?), a former British soldier from Ireland who settled on land obtained from Col. Talbot in London Township. The other Seburn children settled in the Niagara area. All the Seburn men fought and remained loyal during the War of 1812. In total, Stephen and Mary Seburn had 55 grandchildren. Tim Seburn U.E.31 cm. (1 small and 2 oversize boxes) of textual records 113 b&w photos 10 tintypes 2 daguerreotypes 1 wooden stam

Lt. Col. John Clark (1787-1862) was born in Kingston, Upper Canada. In 1801 Clark became a private in the 1st regiment of the Lincoln Militia, serving under Ralfe Clench. By June 1812 he was promoted to lieutenant by Maj. Gen. Sir Isaac Brock. During the War of 1812 he served as lieutenant and adjutant for the Lincoln Militia flank company on the Niagara frontier under Col. William Claus, and was present at the surrender of the enemy at the battle of Queenston Heights. By 1838 the Lincoln Militia was being re-organized and Lt. Col John Clark was requested to lead the 5th Regiment, made up of men from both Grantham and Louth townships in Lincoln County. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1851?. Around this same time Clark bought from William May Jr. a house in Grantham Township. He was to call his home Walnut Dale Farm. John Clark also served as the customs collector for Port Dalhousie, and as a secretary in the Welland Canal Company. One hundred years later efforts by a local heritage group to save John Clark’s home failed, when the house was hit by arsonists. By this time the house had become known as the May-Clark-Seiler House. See RG 195 Anne Taylor Fonds for more information regarding the efforts of the heritage group to save this home. Clark died in 1862 at the age of 79 years and is buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery. John Clark’s daughter Catherine (mentioned in the diary portion of the papers) was married to William Morgan Eccles. The fonds includes correspondence, reports, and accounts related to the activities of the 5th Regiment, Lincoln Militia. It also includes the personal recollection of Lt. Col. John Clark’s experiences at the Battle of Queenston Heights, October 1812 and the 1838 rebellion. At the news of insurrection in Toronto, Lt. Col. Clark lead a group of men ready and willing to protect their country. After an aborted attempt to cross Lake Ontario by ship during severe weather, the troops were requested to return home, but to stand ready should their services be required

The Gainsborough Presbyterian Church was organized prior to 1833, but no records were kept until this date. In 1809, the church was lead by Rev. Daniel Ward Eastman. In 1833 the church became part of the Niagara Presbytery of the American Presbyterian Church. The records include transfer of membership, records of marriages, lists of subscribers and session minutes. Photocopies from originals were made in 1977 by E. Phelps, University of Western Ontario, prior to their deposit with the United Church of Canada Archives, Toronto, Ont.36 p. of textual records ; photocopies of original

Ann Eliza Hepburne Rooth fonds, 1837-1897

Ann Eliza Hepburne was born in Chippawa, Ontario, in 1821, to William Hepburne and Susan Shannon. In 1842, she married William Anthony Rooth in St. James Cathedral in Toronto. They continued to live in different parts of the Niagara region, including Drummondville, Welland and Port Colborne. William was the editor and proprietor of the Drummondville Reporter, as well as an accountant and insurance agent, and later worked for the Customs Service in Port Colborne. He died in 1878, and Eliza in 1899. Both are buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls, Ontario.Fonds consists of a friendship album and a scrapbook. The friendship album contains poems, letters, illustrations, soldiers autographs and some clippings, dated from 1837-1897. Some names of those who contributed to the album include Eliza’s husband William Anthony Rooth, Thomas Cummings, George Conventry, M.M. Johnson, Robert Nelles, Oliver T. Macklem, Thomas Macklem, and L.D. Raymond. There are also autographs of soldiers from the Trinity College Rifles, Toronto, dated 1866. The Trinity College Rifles fought in the Battle of Ridgeway during the Fenian Raid of June, 1866, and were possibly billeted with the Rooth family in Port Colborne. Soldiers from the 13th Battalion, Hamilton, also signed the book, with the entry dated June 18, 1866. There are also signatures of A.K. Scholfield and H. Scholfield, W.C.F. [Welland Canal Field] Battery. The scrapbook is dated 1872 and contains clippings from publications such as Harper’s weekly, the London Illustrated news, and Frank Leslie’s Illustrated newspaper. Most of the clippings are illustrations, with some poems and articles, as well as editorial cartoons. Most of the material concerns world politics and events. However, the last two pages of the scrapbook contain obituaries of local citizens, including Thomas Clark Street, William Macklem, Edward Lee, Richard Hiscotte, and J.C. Woodruff. Other local items of interest include illustrations and descriptions of Niagara Falls (including a poem by George Coventry); a sketch of Queenston in 1812 and one of Brock’s monument, 1860; an article about Sir Allan Napier McNab; an obituary of Col.Thomas Adams, paymaster on the Welland Canal; an article on a fundraiser for St. James Church, Port Colborne; a programme of the reception of the Prince of Wales through Drummondville and Queenston Heights, 1860; and a description of a vessel going over Niagara Falls, 1827. It is unclear whether the scrapbook was kept by Ann Eliza Hepburne Rooth, or one of her daughters. Loose items enclosed in the scrapbook include several posters, assorted clippings, and a copy of the Port Colborne Messenger, dated July 4, 1866. One of the posters is an advertisement for the Peach Festival at St. James Church in Port Colborne, dated September 5, 1874

Group-invariant solutions of semilinear Schrodinger equations in multi-dimensions

    Get PDF
Symmetry group methods are applied to obtain all explicit group-invariant radial solutions to a class of semilinear Schr¨odinger equations in dimensions n = 1. Both focusing and defocusing cases of a power nonlinearity are considered, including the special case of the pseudo-conformal power p = 4/n relevant for critical dynamics. The methods involve, first, reduction of the Schr¨odinger equations to group-invariant semilinear complex 2nd order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with respect to an optimal set of one-dimensional point symmetry groups, and second, use of inherited symmetries, hidden symmetries, and conditional symmetries to solve each ODE by quadratures. Through Noether’s theorem, all conservation laws arising from these point symmetry groups are listed. Some group-invariant solutions are found to exist for values of n other than just positive integers, and in such cases an alternative two-dimensional form of the Schr¨odinger equations involving an extra modulation term with a parameter m = 2−n = 0 is discussed.NSERC research grant and China Scholarship counci

A Phenomenologically Sensitized Analysis of Images Depicting Stressed Embodiment in an Adolescent Male with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

    Get PDF
Each person with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) comes with unique characteristics (idiosyncratic) that give clues to the world they know (Connolly, 2008). It is through their body that they (a) know the world they are experiencing, (b) make meaning, and (c) express certain behaviours. I used Laban’s Movement Analysis (LMA) to practice an attuned and appreciative approach to describing and understanding the body movement in one severe manifestation of autism in an adolescent male. LMA observes human movement across many disciplines and can be applied in many contexts providing a body honoring discourse for description (Connolly, 2008). The framework examines movement in body, space, quality, and relation. Each theme provides a detailed description of the individual’s movement, thus, giving us a richer understanding of patterns and possible triggers to self-injurious behaviours (SIB). During the summer of August 2013, I participated in Brock University’s annual Autism Camp and worked with a 15 year old male named “Aaron” who manifests with low functioning autism. The purpose of my research project was to code and analyze a series of photos taken to help gain insight into movement patterns associated with stressed embodiment and self-injury in “Aaron”. As I understood more about these embodied expressions, I uncovered valuable information on how to read patterns and discover what triggers these events, thus providing strategies on how to help people do more refined observations and make meaning of the behaviour. Laban’s movement analysis provided a sensitized discourse appropriate to the embodied expressions depicted in the photos
