Are there differences between perception of corruption at public and private sector? A multi-country analysis
If we accept that the concept of corruption is influenced by culture and personal values then, we should ask: 1) what are the individual characteristics that shape corruption perception? 2) how important is the incidence of the country of residence in determining it? and 3) is there a relationship between private and public perception of corruption? The database is the 2007 GALLUP Public Opinion Survey; our dataset includes 78 countries and more than 57,000 observations and we estimated probit models. Our main conclusions are that some individual characteristics shape corruption perception (gender, age, marital status, the number of children, religion and religiosity). Moreover, country characteristics also matters. In particular, we find that Gross Domestic Product per capita and inequality play a relevant role. Finally, we also find that perception of corruption at public sector is highly correlated with perception of corruption at private sector.corruption, microeconomic behavior, cross-country comparative research.

Understanding the threats posed by non-native species: public vs. conservation managers.
Public perception is a key factor influencing current conservation policy. Therefore, it is important to determine the influence of the public, end-users and scientists on the prioritisation of conservation issues and the direct implications for policy makers. Here, we assessed public attitudes and the perception of conservation managers to five non-native species in the UK, with these supplemented by those of an ecosystem user, freshwater anglers. We found that threat perception was not influenced by the volume of scientific research or by the actual threats posed by the specific non-native species. Media interest also reflected public perception and vice versa. Anglers were most concerned with perceived threats to their recreational activities but their concerns did not correspond to the greatest demonstrated ecological threat. The perception of conservation managers was an amalgamation of public and angler opinions but was mismatched to quantified ecological risks of the species. As this suggests that invasive species management in the UK is vulnerable to a knowledge gap, researchers must consider the intrinsic characteristics of their study species to determine whether raising public perception will be effective. The case study of the topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva reveals that media pressure and political debate has greater capacity to ignite policy changes and impact studies on non-native species than scientific evidence alone

Tax Compliance and Public Goods Provision -- An Agent-based Econophysics Approach
We calculate the dynamics of tax evasion within a multi-agent econophysics
model which is adopted from the theory of magnetism and previously has been
shown to capture the main characteristics from agent-based based models which
build on the standard Allingham and Sandmo approach. In particular, we
implement a feedback of public goods provision on the decision-making of
selfish agents which aim to pursue their self interest. Our results imply that
such a feedback enhances the moral attitude of selfish agents thus reducing the
percentage of tax evasion. Two parameters govern the behavior of selfish
agents, (i) the rate of adaption to changes in public goods provision and (ii)
the threshold of perception of public goods provision. Furtheron we analyze the
tax evasion dynamics for different agent co mpositions and under the feedback
of public goods provision. We conclude that policymakers may enhance tax
compliance behavior via the threshold of perception by means of targeted public
relations.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the Central European

Testing the Role of Technical Information in Public Risk Perception
It is widely believed that more detail about health effects and likely exposure routes is apt to reduce citizens\u27 concerns about low-probability Risks. The authors\u27 study suggests that providing such detail may not be as useful as, e.g., addressing public concerns and keeping citizens current on officials\u27 actions

The public perception of palaeontology in Scotland: "archaeologists dig dinosaurs"
There is very little written about how palaeontology is perceived by the public. Perhaps the reason is that very few professional palaeontologists have concerned themselves with public opinion, so engrossed they are with their own speciality and not realising that someone else out there may be interested in their findings. Dinosaur palaeontologists are, perhaps, the exception due to the public popularity of these great beasts. Dinosaurs have captured the public's imagination since they were first discovered in the 1800s. They have been the subject of numerous films and documentaries but have often erroneously been linked with archaeology. It is not something that palaeontologists worry about too much beyond the amusement of having a member of the public attempt to discuss the Roman fort, or Celtic cross in the vicinity, whilst the palaeontologist looks for fossils hundreds of millions of years old. It may be of more annoyance to archaeologists when they are asked if they have unearthed any dinosaurs lately. Certainly, that seems to be the case as there have been several articles published on the public perception of archaeology, and they all seem to be upset at the number of times they are asked about dinosaurs. I think that the confusion may arise from the fact that archaeologists often dig things up and that palaeontologists do pretty much the same thing. The difference is that archaeologists ignore the fossils, and palaeontologists ignore the artefacts. Well, not quite - archaeologists will inform palaeontologists of any fossils found during an excavation and similarly, palaeontologists will inform archaeologists of any artefacts they find during an excavation
