Vote Miscounts or Exit Poll Error?

    Get PDF
Electronic vote counting equipment makes it easy for a few persons to electronically manipulate vote counts and virtually impossible to independently audit vote count accuracy. Without routine independent audits of hand-countable voter verified paper ballots, insiders have freedom to manipulate vote counts with negligible possibility of detection. This new exit poll discrepancy function allows us, for the first time, to know what patterns of exit poll discrepancy result from various combinations ofvote miscounts, partisan exit poll completion rate differences, andrandom sampling error (by simulation). These patterns can be compared with actual discrepancy patterns produced in elections to determine what causes are consistent with actual election discrepancy. This paper also outlines statistical methods to determine the number of precincts with significant discrepancy, and how to test precinct-level exit poll and official election results data for consistency with partisan exit poll response rate explanations. Using these methods, mathematicians or statisticians can determine if vote miscounts are indicated prior to when candidates concede future elections

This poll investigates Australian attitudes to military participation in Iraq, the role the Government should play in the upcoming international climate negotiations, views on foreign investment in real estate, feelings about nations such as China and Indonesia, and attitudes to a range of foreign leaders. Overview After a year marked by an unusual intensity in Australia’s interactions with the world, the 2015 Lowy Institute Poll includes findings from a mix of new questions together with established tracking questions on some of the critical issues of our time. In this year’s Poll, we asked Australians about risks to Australia’s security such as terrorism and the risk of military conflict in our region. The Poll investigates attitudes to military participation in Iraq, the role the Government should play in the upcoming international climate negotiations, views on foreign investment in real estate, feelings about nations such as China and Indonesia, and attitudes to a range of foreign leaders. In the eleven years of the Lowy Institute Poll, our goal has been to broaden and deepen the debate about Australia’s foreign policy, based on real data on how Australians think about the world. The 2015 Lowy Institute Poll continues this tradition, with a fascinating set of new results. Key findings This year’s Poll has recorded the lowest feeling of safety among Australians, and the sharpest decline in optimism about the nation’s economic performance in the world, in our 11-year polling history. A majority (69%) see Islamic State as a high risk to Australia\u27s security, and 69% support Australia’s military participation in Iraq, while only 20% think it makes Australia safer from terrorism in the future. The Poll has recorded the third consecutive rise in Australians’ concern about global warmin

Challenges to Fair Elections 5: Poll Worker Training

    Get PDF
If elections are the foundation of our democracy, then poll workers are the gears and wheels that make the mechanics of democracy function on Election Day. Regrettably, this human factor is often overlooked and under-supported. States squeak by each year with a bare minimum of poll workers who receive inadequate training for an increasingly complex task. Recent surveys, press accounts, and troubled primary elections attest to the problem

Q methodology and a Delphi poll: a useful approach to researching a narrative approach to therapy

    Get PDF
Q methodology and a Delphi poll combined qualitative and quantitative methods to explore definitions of White and Epston's (1990) narrative approach to therapy among a group of UK practitioners. A Delphi poll was used to generate statements about narrative therapy. The piloting of statements by the Delphi panel identified agreement about theoretical ideas underpinning narrative therapy and certain key practices. A wider group of practitioners ranked the statements in a Q sort and made qualitative comments about their sorting. Quantitative methods (principal components analysis) were used to extract eight accounts of narrative therapy, five of which are qualitatively analysed in this paper. Agreement and differences were identified across a range of issues, including the social construction of narratives, privileging a political stance or narrative techniques and the relationship with other therapies, specifically systemic psychotherapy. Q methodology, combined with the Delphi poll, was a unique and innovative feature of this study

2004 Presidential Election: Who Won The Popular Vote? An Examination of the Comparative Validity of Exit Poll and Vote Count Data

    * There is a substantial discrepancy -- well outside the margin of error and outcomedeterminative -- between the national exit poll and the popular vote count.* The possible causes of the discrepancy would be random error, a skewed exit poll, or breakdown in the fairness of the voting process and accuracy of the vote count.* Analysis shows that the discrepancy cannot reasonably be accounted for by chance or random error.* Evidence does not support hypotheses that the discrepancy was produced by problems with the exit poll.* Widespread breakdown in the fairness of the voting process and accuracy of the vote count are the most likely explanations for the discrepancy.* In an accurate count of a free and fair election, the strong likelihood is that Kerry would have been the winner of the popular vote. This document was originally published by Verified Vote 2004, and is authored by Jonathan Simon, currently with Election Defense Alliance
