474: lighting and thermal performance of innovative shading devices: new insights into their aesthetics and control in a Mediterranean climate
With a view towards minimising energy demand for cooling and artificial lighting in buildings, this paper evaluates innovative shading devices and how they can balance a generous degree of control mastering seasonal natural light with thermal gains in a typical Mediterranean climate such as Malta. The study evaluates the potential success (or failure) of such shading devices, from both their aesthetic and functional perspectives, as part of a passive design strategy adopted by the architect. Through environmental design and solar geometry, experimental simulations were generated in architectural science modelling software package Ecotect© developed by Andrew Marsh. Moreover a novel computer model termed Solar Control© was developed by the authors in order to assist architects at an early stage during design.peer-reviewe
A note on non-canonical passives : the case of the get-passive

Argument structure and agency in Bemba passives
Bemba employs two passive constructions: an older one with verbal extension -w- and a more recent construction involving the class 2 subject marker ba-. We argue that ba- is ambiguous between an ordinary, referential class 2 marker, and an underspecified passive marker, and is disambiguated by the overt encoding of a class 2 subject, or an oblique semantic agent phrase. Under the passive interpretation, the semantic patient displays both subject-like and object-like properties, posing a problem for the analysis of argument structure in these constructions, and of subjects and objects in Bantu. In contrast, the -w- passive extension is increasingly used in contexts where the agent cannot be expressed, but also in combination with the neutro-passive extension -ik-, that is, with predicates with reduced valency, where it licenses the expression of an agent oblique phrase. We argue that the ba- passive is used in more typical passive contexts, while the -w- passive becomes increasingly restricted to more marginal grammatical contexts. The paper shows that both passive constructions are taking part in a wider grammaticalization process, in which two main functions of the passive, change of argument structure and encoding of agency, are becoming dissociated
Passive Power Filters
Power converters require passive low-pass filters which are capable of
reducing voltage ripples effectively. In contrast to signal filters, the
components of power filters must carry large currents or withstand large
voltages, respectively. In this paper, three different suitable filter
structures for d.c./d.c. power converters with inductive load are introduced.
The formulas needed to calculate the filter components are derived step by step
and practical examples are given. The behaviour of the three discussed filters
is compared by means of the examples. Practical aspects for the realization of

Towards inkjet-printed low cost passive UHF RFID skin mounted tattoo paper tags based on silver nanoparticle inks
The present work describes the inkjet printing and low temperature sintering of silver nanoparticle inks onto transfer tattoo paper. Our approach results in silver features of excellent resolution and conductivity and, subsequently the first passive UHF RFID transfer tattoo tags functional mounted on human skin of improved performance when compared to screen printed passive UHF RFID transfer tattoo paper tags. Moreover, inkjet printed passive UHF RFID transfer tattoo tags show similar performance to copper etched passive UHF RFID tags on plastic substrates. This study compares the image quality (resolution) and electrical performance of two commercial silver nanoparticle inks inkjet printed on transfer tattoo paper. The optimal printing and sintering parameters to obtain high resolution features of resistivities 20 to 57 times the resistivity of bulk silver (1.59 × 10?6 ohm cm) are described. We demonstrate how, by selectively depositing ink in specific areas of the antenna, read distance of passive UHF RFID tags can be increased from 54 to 68 cm whilst decreasing the amount of ink used by 33%. Furthermore, this approach results in inkjet printed passive UHF RFID tattoo tags with larger read distance than silver screen printed passive UHF RFID tattoo tags, 45 cm, and similar to copper etched passive UHF RFID plastic tags, 75 cm. Moreover, inkjet printed passive UHF RFID tattoo tags in this work are considerably thinner (1–5 ?m) than screen and etched passive UHF RFID tags (tens of micrometers) hence, making the former more appealing to the end user. In addition to this, inkjet printing is compatible with large area manufacturing techniques and has the potential to evolve as one of the most promising RFID mass-production techniques. Therefore, this work represents a step towards the commercialization of on-body transfer tattoo paper passive UHF RFID tags
Efficacy of Continuous Passive Motion after Total Knee Arthroplasty in Veteran Patients
Since the early 1980s, continuous passive motion has been used as adjunct therapy in patients’ rehabilitation following total knee arthroplasty. Although existing literature challenged the benefits of continuous passive motion claiming it had no added short-term or long-term benefits after knee arthroplasty (Boese et al., 2014; Chen et al., 2012; Herbold et al., 2014; Leach et al., 2006; Maniar et al., 2012), the existing literature is difficult to generalize and apply to the veteran population at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of continuous passive motion in helping veteran patients at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center achieve post-operative range of motion goals following total knee arthroplasty. Using a retrospective design an extensive chart review was conducted. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with time as a repeated measure independent variable, continuous passive motion as a between-subjects independent variable, and extension/flexion as dependent variables was conducted. For extension, time was statistically significant (p \u3c .001) but mean extension did not differ between continuous passive motion and no continuous passive motion (p = .976). Similarly, for flexion, time was statistically significant (p \u3c .001) but mean flexion did not differ between continuous passive motion and no continuous passive motion (p = .128). Therefore, this research is consistent with current literature, which claims that continuous passive motion does not have short-term benefits, particularly in the area of range of motion
Dynamics of Passive-Scalar Turbulence
We present the first study of the dynamic scaling or multiscaling of
passive-scalar and passive-vector turbulence. For the Kraichnan version of
passive-scalar and passive-vector turbulence we show analytically, in both
Eulerian and quasi-Lagrangian frameworks, that simple dynamic scaling is
obtained but with different dynamic exponents. By developing the multifractal
model we show that dynamic multiscaling occurs in passive-scalar turbulence
only if the advecting velocity field is itself multifractal. We substantiate
our results by detailed numerical simulations in shell models of passive-scalar

Relationship between selected perinatal paratuberculosis management interventions and passive transfer of immunity in dairy calves
The objective of this cohort study was to assess the relationship between perinatal calf management practices relevant to the control of paratuberculosis and passive transfer of immunoglobulin in calves born in an endemically infected Irish dairy herd. Data from 176 calves were used to assess the effect of time spent in the calving area, individual versus non-designated calving and colostrum pasteurisation on serum total protein, zinc sulphate turbidity, globulin and γ-glutamyltransferase. In addition, the effects of colostrum quality, volume of colostrum fed, method of colostrum administration and calving season on passive transfer were quantified. Serum samples were collected as part of routine herd health monitoring from calves aged between one and seven days. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the effect of each variable on the test result and failure of passive transfer as determined using a cut-off point for each diagnostic test. Colostrum pasteurisation and calving area were not significantly associated with passive transfer, whereas increased time spent in the calving pen was consistently associated with a detrimental effect. In addition, a strong seasonal effect was apparent, which appeared to be unrelated to colostrum quality and calf management. Compressed Passive Macromodeling
This paper presents an approach for the extraction of passive macromodels of large-scale interconnects from their frequency-domain scattering responses. Here, large scale is intended both in terms of number of electrical ports and required dynamic model order. For such structures, standard approaches based on rational approximation via vector fitting and passivity enforcement via model perturbation may fail because of excessive computational requirements, both in terms of memory size and runtime. Our approach addresses this complexity by first reducing the redundancy in the raw scattering responses through a projection and approximation process based on a truncated singular value decomposition. Then we formulate a compressed rational fitting and passivity enforcement framework which is able to obtain speedup factors up to 2 and 3 orders of magnitude with respect to standard approaches, with full control over the approximation errors.
