A new teaching methodology of Art based in the Japanese concept of expression and the Spanish concept of appreciation. : Methodological Model of Spanish Artistic Appreciation: Learning children’s own culture through Art. An experience visiting Museum Sorolla with kindergarten children.

Comparing the study of Spanish and Japanese textbooks, relating to the subject of “Artistic, Plastic and Visual Education”, one reaches the basic conclusion that the Spanish model is focused on the teaching of artistic appreciation, whereas the Japanese model is based on the children’s expressive development. Seeing how both models are complementary in their scope of the subject’s instruction, I have determined, by means of studying the reality of Japanese and Spanish schools, to design a methodological plan of artistic education based on the balance between Japanese expression and Spanish appreciation starting from each model’s strong points and good practices. This is the first in a series of four codependent articles that will endow the investigation with a global sense of improvement of Artistic Education through the importation of good international practices adapted to a new context, with a common benefit for both countries. In this specific article the teaching methodology of Spanish artistic appreciation is analyzed via the study of a global early childhood, through actual Artistic Education on the northern part of the Autonomous Community of Madrid. This “good practice” model will take us closer to the Spanish reality in the realm of artistic appreciation Education

From static to social: Museum-date and the reimagining of urban museums in the disruption era

    Get PDF
Background: This study addresses the shifting public perception of museums in the era of disruption, particularly among urban communities. One manifestation of this shift is the emergence of the museum-date phenomenon, in which museum visits are reimagined as interactive, experiential, and lifestyle-oriented activities. This study aims to investigate how this transformation reflects broader changes in how urban society engages with tourism and cultural institutions. Methods: A qualitative ethnographic method was applied to explore this phenomenon. Data collection involved direct observation, in-depth interviews with key and additional informants, and documentation techniques. Fieldwork was conducted at the National Museum of Indonesia and Lawang Sewu to gather insights into the practices and perceptions surrounding museum-dates in an urban context. Findings: Findings indicate that the disruption era has significantly influenced the dynamics of museum engagement. The concept of the museum-date is not only shaped by disruptive innovations—such as digital culture and social media—but also by a tension with conventional museum frameworks. Visitors are increasingly transforming their museum visits into personalized and performative experiences, reflecting broader changes in urban lifestyles and consumer behavior. The museum-date represents a repackaging of tourism experiences that aligns with the sensibilities of the digital and disruption-driven generation. Conclusion: The study concludes that the museum-date trend signifies a reconfiguration of museum functions in response to disruption-era influences, offering new potential for museums to remain culturally relevant and socially integrated in urban life. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article offers a novel contribution by examining the museum-date as a cultural response to the era of disruption, highlighting how innovation and social media have reshaped urban tourism and museum engagement in Indonesia. It provides a new lens to understand how urban society adapts cultural spaces to meet evolving social needs

Vegetation history of Laysan Island, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

    Get PDF
Paleoenvironmental investigations were undertaken on Laysan Island in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands to investigate its flora before historical observations. Substantial impacts occurred to the island as a result of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century guano mining, commercial feather collecting, and denudation of vegetation by feral rabbits. An account of Laysan's historically known vegetation is presented, followed by discussion of results from the investigation of a 16.41-m sediment core froin Laysan's central hypersaline lake. The 7,000-year pollen and seed record, besides indicating the former importance of Pritchardia palms on Laysan, showed the former presence of Seven Previously unkown taxa, only four of which could be identified. Diatom analysis indicated fresh to brackish lake water during the early Holocene, a finding supported by the mollusk assemblage. Diatom diversity gradually decreased over time until there is a near monoculture, with types indicating a gradual increase of salinity. Hypersaline conditions were first recognizable near the top of the sequence with the appearance of Artemia zooplankton. Generally wetter Conditions Seem to have characterized the island before about 5,150 yr B.P., with drier conditions thereafter. The pollen record also suggests two possibly very brief periods of much drier conditions, conceivably related to El Nino-Southern Oscillation episodes

The Abbe Museum requests a one-year, $305,200 grant award in support of its Implementing Sustainability Strategies for the Abbe Museum’s Collections Environment project. The goal of the project is to implement three recommendations presented in the NEH-funded Environmental Improvements Report submitted by Watson & Henry Associates and Tuckerbrook Conservation in January 2012. Specifically, a grant award would fund replacement/improvement of the Abbe Museum’s exhibit lighting system, dehumidification system, and chiller in order to meet environmental preservation targets as well as implement economically and environmentally sustainable approaches to the building environment
