    An Empirical Study of Cohesion and Coupling: Balancing Optimisation and Disruption

    Search based software engineering has been extensively applied to the problem of finding improved modular structures that maximise cohesion and minimise coupling. However, there has, hitherto, been no longitudinal study of developers’ implementations, over a series of sequential releases. Moreover, results validating whether developers respect the fitness functions are scarce, and the potentially disruptive effect of search-based remodularisation is usually overlooked. We present an empirical study of 233 sequential releases of 10 different systems; the largest empirical study reported in the literature so far, and the first longitudinal study. Our results provide evidence that developers do, indeed, respect the fitness functions used to optimise cohesion/coupling (they are statistically significantly better than arbitrary choices with p << 0.01), yet they also leave considerable room for further improvement (cohesion/coupling can be improved by 25% on average). However, we also report that optimising the structure is highly disruptive (on average more than 57% of the structure must change), while our results reveal that developers tend to avoid such disruption. Therefore, we introduce and evaluate a multi-objective evolutionary approach that minimises disruption while maximising cohesion/coupling improvement. This allows developers to balance reticence to disrupt existing modular structure, against their competing need to improve cohesion and coupling. The multi-objective approach is able to find modular structures that improve the cohesion of developers’ implementations by 22.52%, while causing an acceptably low level of disruption (within that already tolerated by developers)

    Developing and applying an integrated modular design methodology within a SME

    Modularity within a product can bring advantages to the design process by facilitating enhanced design reuse, reduced lead times, decreased cost and higher levels of quality. While the benefits of modularity are becoming increasingly better known, at present it is usually left to the designers themselves to introduce modularity into products. Studies into modularity have shown that byimplementing 'formal' methods, further benefits can be made in terms of time, cost, quality and performance. Current approaches that have been proposed for the formal development of modular design methodologies fail to accurately represent knowledge that is inherently produced during design projects and fail to consider design from the different viewpoints of the development process. This work, built on previous work on modularity and design for reuse, aims to develop an integrated design methodology that will optimise the modules created through the design process and allow for modularity to be 'built-in' to product development from the initial stages. The methodology andassociated tools have been developed to provide an easy-to-use approach to modularity that has support for design rationales and company knowledge that aid in effective design decision making. The methodology, named GeMoCURE, provides an integrated total solution to modular design based on reuse of proven physical and knowledge modules. Its incremental nature allows for the optimalstructure to be maintained as the design progresses. A special focus has been on the application of this approach for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which are typically challenged by a lack of design human resources and expertise

    We explore the structuring principle of modularity with the objective of analysing its current ability to meet the requirements of a 're-use' centred approach to design. We aim to highlight the correlation's between modular design and 're-use', and argue that it has the potential to aid the little-supported process of 'design-for-re-use'. In fulfilment of this objective we not only identify the requirements of 'design-for-re-use', but also propose how modular design principles can be extended to support 'design-for-re-use'

    Developing modular product family using GeMoCURE within an SME

    Companies adopt the strategy of producing variety of products to be competitive and responsive to market. Product variation is becoming an important factor in companies' ability to accurately meet customer requirements. Ever increasing consumer options mean that customers have more choices than ever before which put commercial pressures on companies to continue to diversify. This can be a particular problem within Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who do not always have the level of resources to meet these requirements. As such, methods are required that provide means for companies to be able to produce a wide range of products at the lowest cost and shortest time. This paper details a new modular product design methodology that provides a focus on developing modular product families. The methodology's function is described and a case study detailed of how it was used within an SME to define the company's product portfolio and create a new Generic Product Function Structure from which a new family of product variants can be developed. The methodology lends itself to modular re-use which has the potential to support rapid development and configuration of product variants

    Progress or paradox? : NZQA, the genesis of a radical reconstruction of qualifications policy in New Zealand : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Educational Administration at Massey University

    This thesis investigates the origins of, and influences on, the policy developments that preceded the establishment of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). It is a case study of qualifications policy and draws heavily on material gathered from interviews with key-players and an analysis of a range of reports and other documents. The report traces the policy origins from developments in early New Zealand educational history. An essential ingredient to the policy mix that produced NZQA is its frequently paradoxical nature. This study investigates the extent of this paradox and seeks to describe it explain it. It does this by a description of events and developments, and relating them, where appropriate, to relevant theory. The chapter on centralisation and control focuses on the contradiction of what appears to be a centralising development amidst a sea of devolutionary rhetoric is examined. The period of more detailed examination coincides with the tenure of the Labour Government from 1984 to 1990. The role of legitimation is discussed in explaining the paradox apparent in the policy mix that produced NZQA. The impact of the new structure and its associated framework on curriculum, particularly that of secondary schools, is analysed. Here the problematic nature of the split between curriculum and assessment is discussed. This section reinforces the discussion on centralisation, as it unveils the potentially centralist and controlling nature of the new curriculum structure. Concern is voiced over the National Curriculum and Achievement Initiative and how they may combine with the qualifications framework to provide a greater measure of centralised curriculum extending from primary school level and up. The impacts of a modular, or units-of-learning, approach to increasing motivation, flexibility, and efficiency is also scrutinised. Concern is voiced again about controlling influences and the impact of managerialist ideologies. While the potential advantages of modularisation are acknowledged, a critical account is given of its short-coming and dangers as a means of legitimating essentially controlling mechanisms. All three aspects of the policy, curriculum, centralisation and modularisation are shown to be instruments capable of moving the locus of control ever closer to the centre. This inherent susceptibility is in turn related to the prevailing ideologies, and in particular those associated with managerialism and neo-Friedmanite economics. Specific attention is paid to debunking the pejorative association of conspiracy theories with the searches for explanations for policy developments, and care is taken to explain that despite the existence of ideological pressures, much policy occurs in a rather arbitrary, even ad hoc manner. A range of factors that aided the shaping of this particular policy are described and explained. The thesis concludes that explanations of policy developments need to consider a whole raft of factors that shape a particular policy. Furthermore the thesis also demonstrates that there are several inherent tensions and contradictions that remain unresolved in the policy example it examines

    When the original concepts for the computerisation of product structures were developed in the late 1960's the available computer power was very limited. A modularisation technique was developed to address the situation in which a number of similar products were being manufactured. This technique tried to rationalise these products into family groups. Each member of the family differed from the others due to the possession of different features or options. However there was also a high degree of commonality to give the product membership of the family. Modularisation involved the identification of the options and features providing the variability. Those parts remaining tended to be common to all members of the family and became known as the common parts. Separate Bills of Material (BOMs) were set up for each of the identified options or features. Another BOM was set up for the common parts. The simple combination of the required options and/or features BOMs with the common parts BOM specified a product. Computer storage requirements and redundancy were reduced to a minimum. The Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) system could manipulate these option and feature BOMs to over plan product variability without over planning the parts common to all members. The modularisation philosophy had wide acceptance and is the foundation of MRP training. Modularisation, developed for MRP, is generally parts orientated. An unfortunate side effect tends to be the loss of product structure information. Most commercial software would list 6 resistors, Part No. 123, in the common parts BOM without concern as to where the resistors are fitted. This loss of product structure information can hide the fact that two products using these 6 resistors 'in common' are in fact different as they do not use the resistors in the same 6 places. Additional information must be consulted to enable the correct assembly of the 'common' portion of these products. The electronics industry is especially affected by this situation. This industry has changed considerably since the late 1960's. Product variability can be very high. Changes and enhancements are a constant factor in products having a relatively short life span. The modularisation technique does not have a good mechanism for the situation where an option itself has options or features. This situation can exist down a number of layers of the family tree structure of an electronics product. Maintenance of these BOMs is difficult. Where there are options within options the designers and production staff need to know the inter-relationship of parts between options to ensure accuracy, compatibility and plan assembly functions. The advent of computerised spreadsheets has made the maintenance of this type of product structure information easier. This matrix is another separate document which must be maintained and cross checked. It will inevitably differ from the BOMs periodically. This thesis develops a product structure Relational BOM based on the matrix for the family of products. The processing power of the 1990's computer is fully utilised to derive the common parts for any or all of the selected products of the family. All product structure information is retained and the inter-relationship of parts is highly visible. The physical maintenance of the BOMs is simple. The BOM serves all purposes without the need for supplementary information. It is fully integrated into the Sales Order Entry , MRP, Costing, Engineering Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems. This technique has been proven by being the only system used in one Electronics Design and Manufacturing organisation for over 1 year without any major problems. As described in Section 1.6 user satisfaction has been high. The response of the users to the suggestion 'lets buy an "off the shelf" package' is very negative, as it would not incorporate this BOM system. Users have expressed the opinion that EXICOM could not continue, with present staffing levels, using the traditional BOM structure

    Network Topology and Time Criticality Effects in the Modularised Fleet Mix Problem

    In this paper, we explore the interplay between network topology and time criticality in a military logistics system. A general goal of this work (and previous work) is to evaluate land transportation requirements or, more specifically, how to design appropriate fleets of military general service vehicles that are tasked with the supply and re-supply of military units dispersed in an area of operation. The particular focus of this paper is to gain a better understanding of how the logistics environment changes when current Army vehicles with fixed transport characteristics are replaced by a new generation of modularised vehicles that can be configured task-specifically. The experimental work is conducted within a well developed strategic planning simulation environment which includes a scenario generation engine for automatically sampling supply and re-supply missions and a multi-objective meta-heuristic search algorithm (i.e. Evolutionary Algorithm) for solving the particular scheduling and routing problems. The results presented in this paper allow for a better understanding of how (and under what conditions) a modularised vehicle fleet can provide advantages over the currently implemented system
