Knowledge Structures.
This paper investigates how technological distance between firms affects their network of R&D alliances. Our theoretic model assumes that the benefit of an alliance between two firms is given by their technological distance. This benefit-distance relationship determines the ego-network of each firm as well as the overall network structure. Empirical relevance is confirmed for the bio-pharmaceutical industry. Although we find that the network structure is largely explained by firm size, technological distance determines the positioning of firms in the network.technological distance, research alliance, network formation, pharmaceutical industry.
Probing physics students' conceptual knowledge structures through term association
Traditional tests are not effective tools for diagnosing the content and
structure of students' knowledge of physics. As a possible alternative, a set
of term-association tasks (the "ConMap" tasks) was developed to probe the
interconnections within students' store of conceptual knowledge. The tasks have
students respond spontaneously to a term or problem or topic area with a
sequence of associated terms; the response terms and timeof- entry data are
captured. The tasks were tried on introductory physics students, and
preliminary investigations show that the tasks are capable of eliciting
information about the stucture of their knowledge. Specifically, data gathered
through the tasks is similar to that produced by a hand-drawn concept map task,
has measures that correlate with inclass exam performance, and is sensitive to
learning produced by topic coverage in class. Although the results are
preliminary and only suggestive, the tasks warrant further study as
student-knowledge assessment instruments and sources of experimental data for
cognitive modeling efforts.Comment: 31 pages plus 2 tables and 8 figure

Navigating the information landscape
Preprint of column segment to be published in Serials Librarian 61(3), 2011.This article explores the tension between the structures by which the library organises and presents information, and the ways in which students and researchers access, use and conceptualise knowledge. I suggest that while knowledge structures are vital to learning and research, an overemphasis on structurality is mistaken, and can lead to an inappropriately positivist approach which impedes the research mission. The article examines various metaphoric ways of negotiating meaning and navigating information structures, and of crossing the threshold of structuralit
Neurochemical substrates and neuroanatomical generators of the event-related P300
The present review focuses on the current knowledge of the neurochemical processes and neuronal structures involved in the generation of P300. The increasing knowledge in this area facilitates the physiological interpretation of P300 findings as well as the link between P300 research and other research findings in biological psychiatry. Concerning the question of neurochemical substrates, the glutamatergic, GABAergic, cholinergic, noradrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic influences on P300 are reviewed. The knowledge of the generating structures of P300 is summarized from intracranial studies, magnetoencephalographic investigations, lesion and animal studies
Preference-Dependent Unawareness
Morris (1996, 1997) introduced preference-based definitions of knowledge of belief in standard state-space structures. This paper extends this preference-based approach to unawareness structures (Heifetz, Meier, and Schipper, 2006, 2008). By defining unawareness and knowledge in terms of preferences over acts in unawareness structures and showing their equivalence to the epistemic notions of unawareness and knowledge, we try to build a bridge between decision theory and epistemic logic. Unawareness of an event is behaviorally characterized as the event being null and its negation being null.Unawareness, awareness, knowledge, preferences, subjective expected utility theory, decision theory, null event
