Photograph indexing and retrieval using star-graphs
International audienceWe present in this paper a relational approach for indexing and retrieving photographs from a collection. Instead of using simple keywords as an indexing language, we propose to use star-graphs as document descriptors. A star-graph is a conceptual graph that contains a single relation, with some concepts linked to it. They are elementary pieces of information describing combinations of concepts. We use star-graphs as descriptors - or index terms - for image content representation. This allows for relational indexing and expression of complex user needs, in comparison to classical text retrieval, where simple keywords are generally used as document descriptors. We present a document representation model, a weighting scheme for star-graphs inspired by the tf.idf used in text retrieval. We have applied our model to image retrieval, and show the system evaluation results
The Mirror MMDBMS architecture
Handling large collections of digitized multimedia data, usually referred to as multimedia digital libraries, is a major challenge for information technology. The Mirror DBMS is a research database system that is developed to better understand the kind of data management that is required in the context of multimedia digital libraries (see also URL http://www.cs.utwente.nl/~arjen/mmdb.html). Its main features are an integrated approach to both content management and (traditional) structured data management, and the implementation of an extensible object-oriented logical data model on a binary relational physical data model. Fusing image representations for classification using support vector machines
In order to improve classification accuracy different image representations
are usually combined. This can be done by using two different fusing schemes.
In feature level fusion schemes, image representations are combined before the
classification process. In classifier fusion, the decisions taken separately
based on individual representations are fused to make a decision. In this paper
the main methods derived for both strategies are evaluated. Our experimental
results show that classifier fusion performs better. Specifically Bayes belief

Automatic Annotation of Images from the Practitioner Perspective
This paper describes an ongoing project which seeks to contribute to a wider understanding of the realities of bridging the semantic gap in visual image retrieval. A comprehensive survey of the means by which real image retrieval transactions are realised is being undertaken. An image taxonomy has been developed, in order to provide a framework within which account may be taken of the plurality of image types, user needs and forms of textual metadata. Significant limitations exhibited by current automatic annotation techniques are discussed, and a possible way forward using ontologically supported automatic content annotation is briefly considered as a potential means of mitigating these limitations
Deep Dictionary Learning: A PARametric NETwork Approach
Deep dictionary learning seeks multiple dictionaries at different image
scales to capture complementary coherent characteristics. We propose a method
for learning a hierarchy of synthesis dictionaries with an image classification
goal. The dictionaries and classification parameters are trained by a
classification objective, and the sparse features are extracted by reducing a
reconstruction loss in each layer. The reconstruction objectives in some sense
regularize the classification problem and inject source signal information in
the extracted features. The performance of the proposed hierarchical method
increases by adding more layers, which consequently makes this model easier to
tune and adapt. The proposed algorithm furthermore, shows remarkably lower
fooling rate in presence of adversarial perturbation. The validation of the
proposed approach is based on its classification performance using four
benchmark datasets and is compared to a CNN of similar size
