MAKING MEANING USING SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS AND VISUAL GRAMMAR ANALYSIS: COMPARISON OF SOURCE TEXT AND TARGET TEXT REFLECTED IN THE MAIN CHARACTER OF GRAPHIC NOVEL V FOR VENDETTA
This research presents a project designed to investigate a systemic way of analyzing
metafunctions’ shifts between source texts and target texts using systemic functional
linguistic (SFL) collaborated with visual grammar (VS; systemic functional approach for
images). The study tries to examine the correlation between verbal and visual systems and
how it affects the making of meaning in graphic novel. The research is descriptive
qualitative with embedded case study. The data is acquired from monologue and dialogue
uttered by main character of the first graphic novel book V for Vendetta. Content analysis,
questionnaire and focus group discussion are conducted to obtain necessity data. The
results shows there are shifts in transitivity structure, lexical items, and clauses'
interdependency undergo ideational metafunction, modality system and discourse marker
shifts undergo interpersonal metafunction, thematic structures, cohesion devices, physical
presentation shifts undergo textual metafunction. Also shifts in target text caused by
context of visual structure in representational metafunction and compositional
metafunction. Those shifts demonstrate meaning changed in target text and can be
identified in each metafunctions. The metafunction representational and ideational deal
with interpreting content, form, context and symbolized expression in graphic novel. The
shifts in transitivity structure and lexical items are caused by intertextuality and the
theatricality in the content, form, context and symbolized expression of V for vendetta
graphic novel. Interpersonal metafunction relates with enacting social relation. Whereas
textual and compositional metafunction deal with organizing text/images, contextualizing
the narrative scope and build reading order
Grammatical metaphors in English
This article focuses on the concept of 'grammatical metaphor' as it has been introduced in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. It first explains 'metaphor' in general, as it is traditionally known. In contrast to this, grammatical metaphor is explained as a grammatical resource in language. Two types of grammatical metaphor, ideational metaphor and interpersonal metaphor, are explained and illustrated
Museums as disseminators of niche knowledge: Universality in accessibility for all
Accessibility has faced several challenges within audiovisual translation Studies and gained great opportunities for its establishment as a methodologically and theoretically well-founded discipline. Initially conceived as a set of services and practices that provides access to audiovisual media content for persons with sensory impairment, today accessibility can be viewed as a concept involving more and more universality thanks to its contribution to the dissemination of audiovisual products on the topic of marginalisation. Against this theoretical backdrop, accessibility is scrutinised from the perspective of aesthetics of migration and minorities within the field of the visual arts in museum settings. These aesthetic narrative forms act as modalities that encourage the diffusion of ‘niche’ knowledge, where processes of translation and interpretation provide access to all knowledge as counter discourse. Within this framework, the ways in which language is used can be considered the beginning of a type of local grammar in English as lingua franca for interlingual translation and subtitling, both of which ensure access to knowledge for all citizens as a human rights principle and regardless of cultural and social differences. Accessibility is thus gaining momentum as an agent for the democratisation and transparency of information against media discourse distortions and oversimplifications

Modelling the flow of discourse in a corpus of written academic English
Discourse studies attempt to describe how context affects text, and how text progresses from
one sentence to the next. Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) offers a model of language
to describe how information flow varies according to context and co-text through the Textual
metafunction, especially using the functions of Participant Identification and Tracking,
Theme and Information Structure. These systems were evaluated by assembling a corpus of
academic texts and assessing their information flow. Results of the analysis of the three
grammatical systems in the Textual Metafunction demonstrate significant patterns, or
unmarked choices, where the participant, thematic and information systems combine to
powerful effect. Where the systems are not aligned, there is a recognisable effect on the flow
of information

Textual Function in the Jakarta Post Editorials
This research deals with Theme and Rheme in Editorials texts of The Jakarta Post newspaper. The aims are to find out the optional element dominates the structure of theme in the editorials of The Jakarta Post newspaper and to describe where the optional dominant element occurs. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from three different editions of The Jakarta Post editorials which is publish on January 2014. The findings indicate that conjunction was an element dominantly used in textual theme because there were so many compound clauses and there were two or more clauses in coordination relation or dependency on another. In interpersonal theme, adjunct was an element dominantly used that is means that a prepositional phrase has its own internal structure containing complement within it and preposition is put at first position of a clause which is called Theme. Conjunction and adjunct were dominantly used when the editors tells their argumentation, comment and their assessment of the news, because of the using of colloquialism or spoken language in editorials of the Jakarta Post newspaper.
