Mind the Gap: Expressing affect with hyperbole and hyperbolic compounds

    Get PDF
Hyperbole is traditionally understood as exaggeration. Instead, in this paper, we shall define it not just in terms of its form, but in terms of its effects and its purpose. Specifically, we characterize its form as a shift of magnitude along a scale of measurement. In terms of its effect, it uses this magnitude shift to make the target property more salient. The purpose of hyperbole is to express with colour and force that the target property is either greater or lesser than expected or desired. This purpose is well suited to hyperbolic expression. This because hyperbole naturally draws a contrast between two points: how things are versus how they were expected to be. We also consider compound figures involving hyperbole. When it combines with other figures hyperbole operates by magnifying the specific effects of the figure it operates on. We shall see that sometimes hyperbole works as an input for irony; and at other times it builds on a metaphor to increase the effects of that metaphor

Rhetoric in the language of real estate marketing

“Des. Res.”, “rarely available”, “viewing essential” – these are all part of the peculiar parlance of housing advertisements which contain a heady mix of euphemism, hyperbole and superlative. Of interest is whether the selling agent’s penchant for rhetoric is spatially uniform or whether there are variations across the urban system. We are also interested in how the use of superlatives varies over the market cycle and over the selling season. For example, are estate agents more inclined to use hyperbole when the market is buoyant or when it is flat, and does it matter whether a house is marketed in the summer or winter? This paper attempts to answer these questions by applying textual analysis to a unique dataset of 49,926 records of real estate transactions in the Strathclyde conurbation over the period 1999 to 2006. The analysis opens up a new avenue of research into the use of real estate rhetoric and its interaction with agency behaviour and market dynamics

    Hyperbolic Figures

It’s natural for hyperbole to mix with metaphor and irony, and other figures of speech. How do they mix together and what kind of compound, if any, arises out of the mixing? In tackling this question, I shall argue that thinking of hyperbolic figures along the lines familiar from ironic metaphor compounds is a temptation we should resist. Looking in particular at hyperbolic metaphor and hyperbolic irony, I argue, they don’t yield a new encompassing compound figure with one figure building on another. Instead, what we have is one dominant figure colored with hyperbolic tinges. So what does hyperbole bring to the mixing pot? I suggest we should think of hyperbole in hyperbolic figures as being an interpretive effect, modulating the working of the partner figure and thus rendering more emphatic

This research is conducted to explain the form of hyperbole language style which is a form of opposition group language style. Describing the form of hyperbole is done to find out the meaning of words that are conveyed excessively and give a dramatic effect. Based on stylistic theory and previous research, hyperbole has variations that can affect message delivery and create a dramatic impression in a conversation. The research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis by using the listening-recording technique on short videos uploaded by Ummi Quary. The collected data were then reduced, presented, and analysed to draw conclusions. The results show that Ummi Quary uses various forms of hyperbole, including figurative expressions, mixed expressions, referring to body shape, referring to feelings, and logical expressions. In addition, the functions of hyperbole used by Ummi Quary include concretising, emphasising, poeticising, and comparing

Language of literature usually interests people by its beauty. By means of literature expression, a poet able to reveal clearly human character, behavior and how human being encounters the problem of life. Poem is a part of literary work that expresses feeling, experience and \ud imagination by using beautiful language. It may in the form of figurative language. \ud The purpose of the study is to know deeply about the similarities and differences of figurative languages in “The BeeBoy’s Song and Cuckoo Song” poems. This study uses descriptive method because it is designed to obtain information concerning the current status of phenomena \ud and directed to determine the nature of situations which exist at the time of study. The object of this study is focused on the two poems Rudyard Kipling collections, namely; The BeeBoy’s Song and Cuckoo Song. \ud The result of this study showed that both poems consist of four personifications, one antithesis, one hyperbole, one simile and one symbol. Thus, the similarities of figurative language in those poems are personification and antithesis. Meanwhile, the differences of figurative language are \ud symbol, hyperbole and simile

Optical approach of a hypercatadioptric system depth of field

A catadioptric system is composed of a mirror and a perspective camera. Since the mirror is curved and the distance between the mirror and the camera is short, some parts of the panoramic image keep blurred. In this article, an optical approach of the panoramic system using a hyperbolic mirror is presented and its depth of field is analyzed. The impact of different parameters of mirror and camera on the quality of the panoramic image is researched and a valid method of choosing camera and mirror is presented. Finally, this article gives some possible perspectives based on these researches
