Commodity culture : tropical health and hygiene in the British Empire

    Get PDF
Before heading to a 'tropical' region of the Empire, British men and women spent considerable time and effort gathering outfit believed essential for their impending trip. Ordinary items such as soap, clothing, foodstuffs and bedding became transformed into potentially life-saving items that required the fastidious attention of any would-be traveller. Everyone from scientists and physicians to missionaries and administrators was bombarded by relentless advertising and abundant advice about the outfit needed to preserve health in a tropical climate. A closer look at this marketing exercise reveals much about the way people thought about tropical people, places, health and hygiene and how scientific and commercial influences shaped this Imperial commodity culture

A Literature Review on Vital Elements to a Successful Health Education Program in Central America

    Get PDF
The prevalence of poor health in developing regions of Central America is a growing concern in the world today. Inadequate sanitation, unavailability of clean water, and fierce malnutrition are socially and culturally rooted issues that fuel poor health and medical problems in these regions. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on hygiene education programs in rural, impoverished communities of Central America. Research shows that NGOs and government-run health and hygiene education programs may vary in method and success. Regardless of their individual differences, there are four basic elements that help ensure a successful program. Research suggests that the core of successful health education programs is made up of 1) initial needs based evaluations, 2) local support, 3) long-lasting partnerships, and 4) low-technology resource tools. Unfortunately, research in this area is limited. While many programs are active, very few have been evaluated. Increased research efforts will undeniably improve the implementation of successful health and hygiene education programs in underdeveloped Central American rural regions

Tabloid brand medicine chests: selling health and hygiene for the British tropical colonies

    Get PDF
During the late Victorian and early Edwardian period a surge of commodities went on display and were advertised throughout the empire. One such commodity was the Burroughs Wellcome & Co. (BWC) Tabloid brand medicine chest. The marketing of the chest was intimately related to BWC's economic and political interests in empire, contributing to a discourse of tropicality and belief in western progress and white European superiority in Britain's tropical colonies. BWC used their scientific and medical authority to further differentiate and fix western culture and the identity of white Europeans, in opposition to the tropics and their inhabitants. Despite BWC's claims to the medical and scientific superiority of these chests, the majority of their contents were in use for hundreds, if not thousands of years, often deriving from the very contexts white Europeans were supposedly civilising with their aid. BWC's advertisement and promotion of their chests, in this case, reveals processes of hybridisation between supposedly distinct cultures. The selling of Tabloid brand medicine chests contributed to a belief in western and white European superiority, but closer investigation of their contents demonstrates how such claims were, in the end, inherently problematic and unstable. Such an analysis shows that the ultimate medical value of the chests did not derive from unbiased and empirical processes, but from academic, state and industrial authority in relation to Britain's imperial ambitions

    Get PDF
The level of knowledge on personal health and hygiene within the Bangladeshi society is limited. Poor hygiene and health practices restricts the socioeconomic, psycho logical and health well being of adolescents, especially girls. This case-study focuses on a health and hygiene school program initiative from two trainĀers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. To create a comprehensive overview of the methods and activities of the trainers, interviews were conduct Ā ed with the trainers, materials and reports were reviewed, and one school was visited. The trainers organized interactive and participaĀtory classroom sessions, providing adolescents with information ranging from basic hygiene to the effects of drugs and menstrual hygiene. The majority of the participating students were adolescent girls and many students were orphans. The program has reĀsulted in an increased health and hygiene awareness among st uĀ dents and changes in behavior related to food intake and hygiene. Recommendations for further improvement include training the teachers and combining education with installation of latrines and water taps and avenues for socioeconomic improvements to inĀcrease income available for health and hygiene investment

Abstract This study aims to analyze the basic considerations of health and hygiene standardization in the development of culinary tourism and to find the construction of health and hygiene standardization policies in the development of culinary tourism in the future. The basis for the consideration of health and hygiene standardization in the development of culinary tourism is the protection of human rights, where tourism is a human right, and the importance of consuming healthy and clean food and drinks is the right to life and the right to health for humans. This protection is regulated in national and international legal instruments. In fact, the standardization of health and hygiene in the development of culinary tourism is very necessary considering the poisoning cases that have occurred to tourists. The construction of health and hygiene standardization policies in the development of culinary tourism in the future does not only touch business actors at the top level such as serving food in hotels and restaurants, but also on traditional snacks and markets that are culinary tourism destinations.   Keywords: policies, standardization, health and hygiene, culinary tourism.
