    The ground of ground, essence, and explanation

    This paper is about the so-called meta-grounding question, i.e. the question of what grounds grounding facts of the sort ‘φ is grounded in Γ ’. An answer to this question is pressing since some plausible assumptions about grounding and fundamentality entail that grounding facts must be grounded. There are three different accounts on the market which each answer the meta-grounding question differently: Bennett’s and deRosset’s “Straight Forward Account” (SFA), Litland’s “Zero-Grounding Account” (ZGA), and “Grounding Essentialism” (GE). I argue that if grounding is to be regarded as metaphysical explanation (i.e. if unionism is true), (GE) is to be preferred over (ZGA) and (SFA) as only (GE) is compatible with a crucial consequence of the thought that grounding is metaphysical explanation. In this manner the paper contributes not only to discussions about the ground of ground but also to the ongoing debate concerning the relationship between ground, essence, and explanation

    Metaphysical and Conceptual Grounding

    Recently, many philosophers have claimed that the world has an ordered, hierarchical structure, where entities at lower ontological levels are said to metaphysically ground entities at higher ontological levels. Other philosophers have recently claimed that our language has an ordered, hierarchical structure. Semantically primitive sentences are said to conceptually ground less primitive sentences. It’s often emphasized that metaphysical grounding is a relation between things out in the world, not a relation between our sentences. But conflating these relations is easy to do, given that both types of grounding are expressed by non-causal “in-virtue-of” claims. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the relation between metaphysical and conceptual grounding. I argue that conceptual and metaphysical grounding are exclusive: if a given in-virtue-of claim involves conceptual grounding, then it does not involve metaphysical grounding. I also develop some heuristics for deciding which type of grounding is relevant in a given case. These heuristics suggest that many proposed cases of metaphysical grounding do not actually involve metaphysical grounding at all

    A number of philosophers have recently found it congenial to talk in terms of grounding. Grounding discourse features grounding sentences that are answers to questions about what grounds what. The goal of this article is to explore and defend a counterpart-theoretic interpretation of grounding discourse. We are familiar with David Lewis's applications of the method of counterpart theory to de re modal discourse. Counterpart-theoretic interpretations of de re modal idioms and grounding sentences share similar motivations, mechanisms, and applications. I shall explain my motivations and describe two applications of a counterpart theory for grounding discourse. But, in this article, my main focus is on counterpart-theoretic mechanisms

    In this paper we consider the importance of using a humanoid physical form for a certain proposed kind of robotics, that of theory grounding. Theory grounding involves grounding the theory skills and knowledge of an embodied artificially intelligent (AI) system by developing theory skills and knowledge from the bottom up. Theory grounding can potentially occur in a variety of domains, and the particular domain considered here is that of language. Language is taken to be another “problem space” in which a system can explore and discover solutions. We argue that because theory grounding necessitates robots experiencing domain information, certain behavioral-form aspects, such as abilities to socially smile, point, follow gaze, and generate manual gestures, are necessary for robots grounding a humanoid theory of language

    Grounding nonexistence

    Contingent negative existentials give rise to a notorious paradox. I formulate a version in terms of metaphysical grounding: nonexistence can't be fundamental, but nothing can ground it. I then argue for a new kind of solution, expanding on work by Kit Fine. The key idea is that negative existentials are contingently zero-grounded – that is to say, they are grounded, but not by anything, and only in the right conditions. If this is correct, it follows that grounding cannot be an internal relation, and that no complete account of reality can be purely fundamental

    The elucidations and regimentations of grounding offered in the literature standardly take it to be a necessary connection. In particular, authors often assert, or at least assume, that if some facts ground another fact, then the obtaining of the former necessitates the latter; and moreover, that grounding is an internal relation, in the sense of being necessitated by the existence of the relata. In this article, I challenge the necessitarian orthodoxy about grounding by offering two prima facie counterexamples. First, some physical facts may ground a certain phenomenal fact without necessitating it; and they may co-exist with the latter without grounding it. Second, some instantiations of categorical properties may ground the instantiation of a dispositional one without necessitating it; and they may co-exist without grounding it. After arguing that these may be genuine counterexamples, I ask whether there are modal constraints on grounding that are not threatened by them. I propose two: that grounding supervenes on what facts there are, and that every grounded fact supervenes on what grounds there are. Finally, I attempt to provide a rigorous formulation of the latter supervenience claim and discuss some technical questions that arise if we allow descending grounding chains of transfinite length

    Enhanced earthing performance by improved design and grounding material properties

    An enhance ground electrode (E.G.E.) is a portable grounding system that acts as an additional grounding system, designed for zero potential reference points. The E.G.E could eliminate the increasing of resistance in grounding conductor as it placed next to the electrical equipment, hence the grounding conductor is shortened. A prototype of E.G.E was developed in size measuring 19.5 em x 19.5 em x 11.5 em and filled with selected grounding material, attached with a grounding electrode. Meanwhile, the grounding electrode was reviewed in terms of thermal conductivity electrode material, variation of soil resistivity with the electrode's depth, and effect on the number of grounding rods to ground resistance. The design ofthe electrode was selected based on heat dispersion that was simulated using the Finite Element Method (FEM) package. The four selected grounding materials chosen based on its resistivity value and physical composition which is; kaolin, sand, bauxite and coal. These materials were investigated using the morphology test, element composition test and correlation between water content and material resistivity test. Fabricated E.G.E was tested under lightning flashover conditions in a HV laboratory using an impulse test generator in order to validate its electrical performance and prolog life expectancy. Data obtained from laboratory tests indicated that bauxite is the best material for the proposed E.G.E system, compared to other materials by offering the lowest different percentage breakdown voltage comparable to native earth, which is around 1.27%. Besides that, bauxite gets 35% strikes during dry condition and 38% strikes during wet condition among three others material. It is hope this E.G.E sustaining a good performance as a grounding system

    Monte Carlo evaluation of the impact of subsequent strokes on backflashover rate

    The paper deals with the impact of subsequent strokes on the backflashover rate (BFR) of HV overhead transmission lines (OHLs), assessed by means of an ATP-EMTP Monte Carlo procedure. The application to a typical 150 kV Italian OHL is discussed, simulating several tower grounding system arrangements. Subsequent strokes parameters are added to the statistical simulation variables: Peak current, front time, time-to-half value, lightning polarity, line insulation withstand, lightning location and phase angle of the power frequency voltage. The input data are fed to an ATP-EMTP complete circuit model of the OHL, including line insulation, lightning representation and tower grounding system, the latter simulated by a pi-circuit model able to simulate the effects due to propagation and soil ionization, at modest computational costs. Numerical results evidence a non-negligible BFR increase (in relative terms) due to subsequent strokes: for spatially concentrated grounding systems the BFR increase approximatively vary in inverse proportion with the low frequency grounding resistance, whereas for spatially extended grounding systems the BFR increase depends on the grounding system behavior at high frequencies
