[Abstract eng]  Orientating among the balloons: maps, atlases and mapping practices in comic books Starting from the recently emerged field of ‘comic book geography’ (Dittmer 2014), the article proposes ‘comic book cartography’ as a further research line to explore the intersections bewteen comics and cartography. The proposed transdisciplinary approach is based on the encounter between geography and geocriticism, comics studies and post-representational theories in cartography. Through a ‘carto-centred’ reading of both Italian and international case studies, the comic book is interpreted as a map inolving author and reader in an orientation practice

    Get PDF
This paper studies Poema a fumetti, the striking graphic novel Dino Buzzati (1906-1972), published in 1969. This novel, which moves within the realms of the fantastic, is centered on the topic of the descent into hell, and thus it revisits the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Buzatti, a master of the fantastic in Italian literature, distills the myth in comic and impregnates it with the sexuality and anguish of contemporary sensibility

Benthic and interstitial habitats of a lentic spring as invertebrate refuges during supra-seasonal drought

Instream refuges are places where invertebrates persist during disturbances due to reduced adverse impacts. During droughts, low flows may be accompanied by elevated temperatures, and potential refuges including subsurface sediments and spring-fed headwaters are therefore characterized by hydrological and thermal stability. This study examined invertebrate use of benthic and interstitial habitats (analogous to the hyporheic zone) in a groundwater-dominated, perennial limnocrene spring during a supra-seasonal drought. Although exceptionally high air temperatures occurred as flow declined, environmental conditions in the spring were relatively stable, and refuge-seeking vertical migrations into interstitial habitats did not coincide with peak temperatures. However, maximum benthic abundance of two amphipods (Gammarus pulex and Crangonyx pseudogracilis) occurred shortly after the period of elevated temperatures. It is suggested that this temporary increase in the abundance of these mobile taxa reflected upstream migrations triggered by a combination of refuge-seeking behaviour and thermally-stimulated activity. In addition, the spring provided a passive refuge for many lotic invertebrate taxa. A conceptual model is presented, which illustrates the potential contribution of multiple refuges to invertebrate persistence in drought-impacted ecosystems

    Get PDF
This analysis compares the language used in a corpus of comics translated from English into Italian with the language of a corpus of comics originally written in Italian. The starting point is the assumption that the language of comics tends to imitate spoken language. An analysis is conducted at textual, syntactic, morphological and lexical level to identify the registers used in both corpora and establish whether traits emerge which may be related to translation universals

Exploring copepod distribution patterns at three nested spatial scales in a spring system. Habitat partitioning and potential for hydrological bioindication

    Get PDF
In groundwater-fed springs, habitat characteristics are primarily determined by a complex combination of geomorphic features and physico-chemical parameters, while species assemblages are even more intricate. Springs host species either inhabiting the spring mouth, or colonizing spring habitats from the surface or from the aquifers which feed the springs. Groundwater species living in springs have been claimed as good candidates for identifying dual aquifer flowpaths or changes in groundwater pathways before reaching the spring outlets. However, the reliability of spring species as hydrological biotracers has not been widely investigated so far. Our study was aimed at analysing a large karstic spring system at three nested spatial scales in order: i) to assess, at whole spring system scale, the presence of a groundwater divide separating two aquifers feeding two spring units within a single spring system, by combining isotope analyses, physico-chemistry, and copepod distribution patterns; ii) to test, at vertical spring system scale, the effectiveness of copepods in discriminating surface and subsurface habitat patches within the complex mosaic spring environment; iii) to explore, at local spring unit level, the relative role of hydrochemistry and sediment texture as describers of copepod distribution among microhabitats. The results obtained demonstrated the presence of a hierarchical spatial structure, interestingly reflected in significant differences in assemblage compositions. Copepod assemblages differed between the two contiguous spring units, which were clearly characterized by their hydrochemistry and by significant differences in the groundwater flowpaths and recharge areas, as derived by the isotope analyses. The biological results suggested that stygobiotic species seem to be related to the origin of groundwater, suggesting their potential role as hydrological biotracers. At vertical scale, assemblage composition in surface and subsurface habitats was significantly different, both between spring units and among microhabitats, supporting strong habitat preferences of copepod species. At the smaller local scale, the response to habitat patchiness of subsurface copepod assemblages resulted in distribution patterns primarily defined by sediment texture, while the sensitivity to differences in hydrochemistry was negligible

Pen., Sez. III, Sent. N. 22265/2017

This essay focuses on pedopornography, mainly on the s.c. virtual pedopornography, after the sentence of the Italian Court of Cassation n. 22265/2017. A critical perspective is provided, under the systematic and teleological view of the norm and under the case-law of the Court of Cassation, which defined its borders. The provided conclusion is that not only the in-crimination of pedopornography is, in general, inadequate and internally contraddictory, but also it will have, in practice, opposite consequences to the legislator's and the Court's intent. On the contrary, an appropriate regulation of the phenomenon would have the effect of making pedophiles adapt their behaviour to the rule of law, with less prejudice to children and their rights

Autonomia e abolizione dell'arte.

In this article, we analyse the survival of Orpheus and Eurydice’s myth in a peripheral literary genre: the comic-book. Dino Buzzati (1969), Neil Gaiman (1991) and Max (1994) offer their own vision of the classical myth with the image and the word. Experimental Literature and Italian Popular Culture in the Works of Umberto Eco

Può un libro incarnarsi? Divenire «memoria vegetale»? Can a book become incarnate? Become “vegetal memory”? A living fragment of the collective cultural intellect? “Everyone turned around to look at Franti, and that infamous boy was smiling”. This is how (together with Joyce’s quotation on music-hall) Eco’s first collection of pastiches and parodies, Diario Minimo (Misreadings), is introduced, recalling the little scoundrel Franti in Edmondo De Amicis’s novel, Cuore (The Heart of a Boy): a book that formed at least half a century of Italians and that Eco calls to mind in one of his last (partly autobiographical) novels, The Mysterious Flame Of Queen Loana, to underline how a mere paper object had managed to educate whole generations on sacrifice, patriotism and war. Both in his narrative works and those of theoretical reflection, Eco exposes and deconstructs the devices of the “narrative machine”, and does so ―as it is very well known―with an all-embracing, semiotic look. Novels, comics, television programs, and songs become his fields for linguistic-textual experimentation to penetrate and throw light on contemporary culture. With regard to this comprehensive look, this work pays particular attention to Eco’s interest in music, an interest that―from Thema (Omaggio a Joyce) to Pippo non lo sa―has been an object of analysis in the literary parable of the Italian writer and a “pretext” for developing those themes so dear to him: memory, irony and laughter, the aesthetics of everyday life in pop culture.Fil: Gherlone, Laura.
