The Endowment Effect in a Public Good Experiment

    Get PDF
Previous tests of the endowment effect have usually observed WTA-WTP disparities. Here, a public good experiment is employed. Both account framing and duration framing treatments are introduced to alter subjects’ perceived control over an initial endowment. Results do not indicate that preferences shift in a way consistent with the endowment effect.endowment effect, public good, willingness to pay

Creating Peace through Peace Journalism as an Alternative News Framing

    Get PDF
People often read about news on war or conflict from newspaper. Effect of reading the news often causes a negative effect rather than empathy or sympathy, such as hatred or anger. This effect could lead to revenge or other reactive action which harm other people. Actually, this effect could come up different if the news was framing with alternative news framing. This paper offers alternate news framing for journalist to report news on war or conflict in order to reducing the negative effect and also prevent causing negative effect. Discussion in this paper starts with how mass media can influence and create people’s opinion on many things that happened surround them. Opinions which shaped by printing media are based on how journalist framing the news. One event could be framed differently based on how journalist emphasizes the event and angle of writing the news. Peace Journalism as alternate framing is written in this paper as choice for journalist in order to contribute to create peace in the community. Some news regarding conflict in Indonesia will be analyzed with framing analysis to show how framing news is important to reduce negative effect. In addition, this paper will discuss about the important role of journalist as peace maker. As Maria Hartiningsih, one of senior journalists from Kompas Newspaper said that “every journalist has to contribute peace and justice when they report an event (2001)s. This opinion was also shared by Johan Galtung, Norwegian professor of peace studies. In his opinion, journalist would be more productive if reporters report from the positive or solution point of view rather than focusing on violence (1998). Therefore, this paper will argue that peace journalism is the alternate news framing for journalist in order to take part in creating peace

Cultural Education and the Voluntary Provision of Cultural Goods: An Experimental Study

We study the effect that the possibility of investing in cultural education has on the voluntary contributions to a cultural good. This is done in a two-stage public-good experiment. We also provide treatments with different context in order to control for a possible framing effect. Our results show the absence of an effect of cultural education on the contributions to the cultural good and a slight increase in the allocations of subjectsÂendowments to the cultural good when the cultural context is implemented in the laboratory.cultural education, cultural good, framing, experiments, voluntary provision

Framing Anomaly in the Effective Theory of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We consider the geometric part of the effective action for Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE). It is shown that accounting for the framing anomaly of the quantum Chern-Simons theory is essential to the obtain correct gravitational linear response functions. In the lowest order in gradients the linear response generating functional includes Chern-Simons, Wen-Zee and gravitational Chern- Simons terms. The latter term has a contribution from the framing anomaly which fixes the value of thermal Hall conductivity and contributes to the Hall viscosity of the FQH states on a sphere. We also discuss the effects of the framing anomaly on linear responses for non-Abelian FQH states.Comment: 5 pages, v3 contains the Erratum on the value of the orbital spin varianc

The framing of options for retirement: Experimental tests for policy. ESRI WP604, December 2018

    Get PDF
We hypothesise and confirm a substantial framing effect in relation to whether people opt for an annuity on retirement. Two laboratory experiments were conducted in collaboration with a national pensions regulator. Individuals demanded a higher annuity rate when pensions were initially conceived of as an accumulated lump sum – a “nest egg” or “pension pot” – than when they were initially conceived of as retirement income. The effect was recorded using both a matching and a choice procedure. Effect sizes implied more than a doubling of demand for annuities at market rates. While mindful of the need for caution in generalising from hypothetical laboratory studies, the findings have potentially strong policy implications. The framing of pension products in marketing materials and disclosures may have substantial effects on financial risks borne in later life

Framing Influence on Fairness Perceptions of Differential Prices

The objective of the research presented in this paper is to examine the effect of two types of framing (attribute and goal) on distributive and procedural price fairness perceptions and on some other variables of consumer behavior. For this purpose, two 2x2 marketing experiments were conducted. The first study evaluated the influence of price framing and seller’s motive on price fairness, price policy fairness, and value perceptions, as well as shopping intentions. The second study assessed the influence of price framing and seller’s motive framing on the same variables as in the first study. An important finding of this paper was that price framing has a direct influence on price fairness perceptions and seller’s motive has a direct influence on policy fairness perceptions. The implications of these results for the firms concern the communication of their pricing messages.distributive fairness, procedural fairness, attribute framing, goal framing, dual entitlement

Strategic Media, Cynical Public? Examining the Contingent Effects of Strategic News Frames on Political Cynicism in the UK

    Get PDF
Through the use of experimental methods, this study examines the claim that strategic news engenders political cynicism. Firstly, it builds upon previous theory by conceptualising and measuring political cynicism at both issue-specific and global levels. Secondly, the contingency of framing effects is a contested but crucial area of the framing paradigm, and deserves greater attention in strategic framing studies. The study therefore examines this in detail by testing a number of individual characteristics for their moderating effects. I found that relative to issue-based coverage, strategic news frames increased issue-specific political cynicism, but this effect was only evident for those who were less politically engaged and knowledgeable. The effects of the strategy frame on more global measures of political cynicism were minimal. The findings are discussed in the light of ongoing debates about framing effects and the media’s role in democratic engagement
