    Computing Optimal Experimental Designs via Interior Point Method

    In this paper, we study optimal experimental design problems with a broad class of smooth convex optimality criteria, including the classical A-, D- and p th mean criterion. In particular, we propose an interior point (IP) method for them and establish its global convergence. Furthermore, by exploiting the structure of the Hessian matrix of the aforementioned optimality criteria, we derive an explicit formula for computing its rank. Using this result, we then show that the Newton direction arising in the IP method can be computed efficiently via Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula when the size of the moment matrix is small relative to the sample size. Finally, we compare our IP method with the widely used multiplicative algorithm introduced by Silvey et al. [29]. The computational results show that the IP method generally outperforms the multiplicative algorithm both in speed and solution quality

    A lens-coupled scintillation counter in cryogenic environment

    In this work we present an elegant solution for a scintillation counter to be integrated into a cryogenic system. Its distinguishing feature is the absence of a continuous light guide coupling the scintillation and the photodetector parts, operating at cryogenic and room temperatures respectively. The prototype detector consists of a plastic scintillator with glued-in wavelength-shifting fiber located inside a cryostat, a Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode (G-APD) outside the cryostat, and a lens system guiding the scintillation light re-emitted by the fiber to the G-APD through optical windows in the cryostat shields. With a 0.8mm diameter multiclad fiber and a 1mm active area G-APD the coupling efficiency of the "lens light guide" is about 50%. A reliable performance of the detector down to 3K is demonstrated.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure

    Experimental investigation of an interior search method within a simple framework

    A steepest gradient method for solving Linear Programming (LP) problems, followed by a procedure for purifying a non-basic solution to an improved extreme point solution have been embedded within an otherwise simplex based optimiser. The algorithm is designed to be hybrid in nature and exploits many aspects of sparse matrix and revised simplex technology. The interior search step terminates at a boundary point which is usually non-basic. This is then followed by a series of minor pivotal steps which lead to a basic feasible solution with a superior objective function value. It is concluded that the procedures discussed in this paper are likely to have three possible applications, which are (i) improving a non-basic feasible solution to a superior extreme point solution, (iii) an improved starting point for the revised simplex method, and (iii) an efficient implementation of the multiple price strategy of the revised simplex method

    The ordinary and the experimental : Cook Wilson and Austin on method in philosophy

    To what extent was ordinary language philosophy a precursor to experimental philosophy? Since the conditions on pursuit of either project are at best unclear, and at worst protean, the general question is hard to address. I focus instead on particular cases, seeking to uncover some central aspects of J. L. Austin’s and John Cook Wilson’s ordinary language based approach to philosophical method. I make a start at addressing three questions. First, what distinguishes their approach from other more traditional approaches? Second, is their approach a form of experimental philosophy? Third, given their aims, should it have been? I offer the following preliminary answers. First, their approach distinctively emphasizes attention to what we should say when. Second, their approach is closer to contemporary experimental mathematics than it is to some prominent forms of contemporary experimental philosophy. Third, some purported grounds for pursuing their aims by way of surveying what individual speakers would say when are not compelling

    This paper presents the performance of an instantaneous torque control method. The simulation and experimental results illustrate the capability of Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM) being used in the motor drive industry. Based on experimental data, the advantages of this control method and its disadvantages in practical implementation were studied. The model used in the simulation is the linear magnetic model which has the 12/8 structure, the same structure as the experimental switched reluctance motor

    Study of the efflux velocity induced by two propellers

    Present analysis is related with seabed erosion caused during docking and undocking maneuvering. Twin propellers without rudder were studied using a physical model with a fixed clearance distance and three different rotating velocities. Experimental results were compared to theoretical expressions of the efflux velocity, axial velocity and finally maximum bed velocity. Efflux velocity equations overestimate the experimental results, whereas axial velocity computed using the Dutch method fits reasonably well the experimental data. However, when maximum bed velocity expressions are compared to experimental results, German method behaves better with an over estimation if a quadratic superposition of the single jets is used.Postprint (published version

    Learning Adjustment Sets from Observational and Limited Experimental Data

    Estimating causal effects from observational data is not always possible due to confounding. Identifying a set of appropriate covariates (adjustment set) and adjusting for their influence can remove confounding bias; however, such a set is typically not identifiable from observational data alone. Experimental data do not have confounding bias, but are typically limited in sample size and can therefore yield imprecise estimates. Furthermore, experimental data often include a limited set of covariates, and therefore provide limited insight into the causal structure of the underlying system. In this work we introduce a method that combines large observational and limited experimental data to identify adjustment sets and improve the estimation of causal effects. The method identifies an adjustment set (if possible) by calculating the marginal likelihood for the experimental data given observationally-derived prior probabilities of potential adjustmen sets. In this way, the method can make inferences that are not possible using only the conditional dependencies and independencies in all the observational and experimental data. We show that the method successfully identifies adjustment sets and improves causal effect estimation in simulated data, and it can sometimes make additional inferences when compared to state-of-the-art methods for combining experimental and observational data.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    High Speed Blanking: An Experimental Method to Measure Induced Cutting Forces

However, the inherent dynamics of such a process makes it difficult to develop a practical high speed punch press. The fracture phenomenon governing the blanking process has to be well understood to correctly design the machine support and the tooling. To observe this phenomenon at various controlled blanking speeds a specific experimental device has been developed. The goal is to measure accurately the shear blanking forces imposed on the specimen during blanking. In this paper a new method allowing the blanking forces to be measured and taking into account the proposed test configuration is explained. This technique has been used to determine the blanking forces experienced when forming C40 steel and quantifies the effect of process parameters such as punch die clearance, punch speed, and sheet metal thickness on the blanking force evolution
