Overwhelming scientific evidence points to a very serious situation created in great part by our human consumption and exploitation of nature, our waste and pollution, and lack of reverence for the Earth, Earth's waters, and for all living creatures. This degradation of the environment affects everyone

Adverse Selection in the Environmental Stewardship Scheme: Evidence in the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme?

    Get PDF
The Environmental Stewardship Scheme provides payments to farmers for the provision of environmental services based on foregone agricultural income. This creates a potential incentive compatibility problem which, combined with an information asymmetry on farm land heterogeneity, could lead to adverse selection of farmers into the Scheme and therefore reduced cost-effectiveness of the Scheme. This reduced cost-effectiveness would be represented by a systematic overpayment of farmers for the land enrolled into the Scheme, compared to the opportunity cost of production. This paper examines the potential adverse selection problem affecting the higher tier of the Environmental Stewardship, the Higher Level Stewardship, using a principal agent framework combined with farm-level data on participation in the HLS. Empirically, it is found that, at the farm level, HLS participation is negatively related to cereal yields, suggesting the existence of adverse selection in the HLS and farmer overcompensation from entering the scheme.Adverse selection, agri-environment, Environmental Stewardship, principal-agent, contract, Environmental Economics and Policy, D78, D82, H44, Q18, Q58,

Sociocultural Dimensions of Environmental Stewardship in New Hampshire: Implications for Adult Environmental Education

    Get PDF
The overarching aim of this dissertation is to expand evidence and theory of adult identity processes in the context of environmental stewardship, as well as to provide knowledge and recommendations to environmental stewardship and environmental education professionals. The intent is to better understand variation in how adult environmental stewards report on and value their own engagement with both sociocultural and natural systems. This line of inquiry stems from the fundamental claim that environmental stewardship activity is not singularly based on environmental content knowledge but is also related to forms of cultural and social engagement. By recognizing these dual aspects of environmental stewardship, organizers and educators can provide better support and resources for environmental stewardship efforts. This dissertation contains three manuscripts, two empirical and one conceptual work, that explore the sociocultural dimensions relevant to adult engagement in environmental stewardship

Environmental Attitudes and Environmental Stewardship: Implications for Sustainability

    Get PDF
Although shareowners and boards are critical to shaping a firm’s environmental behavior, this paper gives focus to management practitioners based on their operational functions within the firm. It argues that environmental stewardship is determined by the worldview of managers from which their attitude and ethical response to environmentally-related issues are shaped. The New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale is applied to determine the environmental attitude of managers, but the discussion also considers the Dominant Social Paradigm (DSP) to provide further valuable insights to enhance the implications of worldviews on sustainability

Expanding current definitions of environmental stewardship through organizational mission statement analysis

    Get PDF
In recent years, environmental stewardship has been emphasized as one solution to social-ecological sustainability concerns, especially at the local scale. The Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project (STEW-MAP) is a national research program developed by the USDA Forest Service that has been implemented at numerous locations in the United States and internationally. This study compared the mission statements of environmental stewardship groups in the Los Angeles River Watershed to previously proposed definitions and frameworks of organizational environmental stewardship to see how well they were reflected. A thematic analysis of the mission statements was also carried out to identify locally important themes and priorities. Results show that, although often consistent, the mission statements do not always reflect existing concepts around environmental stewardship. Additionally, environmental stewardship is not always explicit in the mission statements of organizations that are known to conduct these activities. We suggest that non-traditional groups that engage in stewardship work (i.e., research institutions) as well as groups focused on social issues are overlooked actors in sustainable city goals. A more comprehensive definition of environmental stewardship may be needed to bridge the gap between research and practice

Environmental Stewardship Issue among Malaysian Manufacturing Firms

    Get PDF
Since the fourth industrial revolution is embryonic also known as the automation and machine era, the issue of industrial waste and pollution have become more pressing. This is because manufacturing firms are known to have the highest pollution. It has made the issues of environmental stewardship vital for both developing and developed countries. However, the implementation of the concept of environmental stewardship differs from country to country and from one manufacturing firm to another. Notwithstanding, this issue is vital for the human environment. Therefore, this paper investigated the issue of environmental stewardship among Malaysian manufacturing firms. Data were collected from 104 manufacturing firms of various production types. The findings of this study revealed that environmental stewardship culture among Malaysian manufacturing firms is low. Thus, the study identified 18 strategic steps to improve environmental stewardship culture among Malaysian manufacturing firms. These identified strategies will contribute to ensuring sustainable manufacturing practices through which industries can improve the manufacturing practices in order to offset the negativity on the environment

Organic farming and agri-environmental stewardship schemes in Devon

A postal survey was undertaken in North Devon looking at entry into England Rural Development Programme (ERDP) environmental schemes in relation to farming system and markets. The main survey was based in and around the North Devon Biosphere reserve. Significantly more farms replied who had Countryside Stewardship (CSS) agreements than from those who were not in the scheme. There was a greater likelihood of small farms joining CSS as were beef, sheep and cereal farms compared with dairy farms. A greater percent of organic farms had CSS agreements compared with the conventional farms. A smaller telephone survey in a CSS target area in South Devon was also undertaken which confirmed these results. Those farms with CSS agreements were more likely to have joined or be joining the new agri-environmental schemes
