The Employment Consequences of Seniority Wages

    Get PDF
This paper combines two strains of the literature on the employment effects of deferred compensation. The first strain separates seniority and job matching wage effects on the basis of individual data, but cannot look at employment consequences. The second strain explains the employment structure on the basis of establishment data, but cannot properly calculate seniority wages. This paper uses linked employeremployee data, aggregates individual seniority wages to the establishment level, and correlates them with the establishment employment structure. According to the deferred compensation hypothesis this paper finds that establishments with stronger seniority wages have a higher tenure but hire less older employees. --Seniority Wages,Employment Structure,Linked Employer-Employee Data

Simulating the Influence of Collaborative Networks on the Structure of Networks of Organizations, Employment Structure, and Organization Value

From the perspective of reindustrialization, it is important to understand the evolution of the structure of the network of organizations employment structure, and organization value. Understanding the potential influence of collaborative networks (CNs) on these aspects may lead to the development of appropriate economic policies. In this paper, we propose a theoretical approach to analysis this potential influence, based on a model of dynamic networked ecosystem of organizations encompassing collaboration relations among organization, employment mobility, and organization value. A large number of simulations has been performed to identify factors influencing the structure of the network of organizations employment structure, and organization value. The main findings are that 1) the higher the number of members of CNs, the better the clustering and the shorter the average path length among organizations; 2) the constitution of CNs does not affect neither the structure of the network of organizations, nor the employment structure and the organization value.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, conference paper at the 14th IFIP Working Conference on Virtual Enterprises, PRO-VE'13, http://www.pro-ve.org

Employment and productivity: disentangling employment structure and qualification effects

    Get PDF
This paper studies the effect of changes in the employment rate on labour productivity per hour, taking an empirical approach. By splitting the workforce into three qualification categories, this study allows us to distinguish the effects of changes in the employment rate structure from those of changes in the qualification structure. With the results obtained, we are then able to emphasise the mechanical effect on GDP, for each country in our panel, of a catch-up with the best practice with respect to employment rate structure and qualification level. It appears that the two effects are more or less of the same magnitude. Moreover, this methodology allows us to rank the countries in our panel depending on the gains they could expect from adopting the best practices in each of the two areas.Productivity; Growth; Employment; Education

A coordinated development between industrial structure and employment structure is indeed an important problem in every country. A reasonable industrial structure can promote the benign development of employment structure, the quality of employment structure has laid a solid foundation for the transformation and upgrading of industrial structure. This paper uses discrete ratios of structure and the coordination coefficients of the industrial structure and employment structure to calculate Vietnam's industry structure and employment structure coordination for the period of 1995-2013. The results have shown that the Vietnamese industry structure and employment structure from 1995 to 2013 is in a state of imbalance. The overall coordination is bad. Coordination coefficients are showing obvious changes in volatility. Keywords: Industrial structure, Employment structure, Coordinate analysi

Analysis of the Lagging Time of Employment Structure in Vietnam

If any country’s or region's employment structure lags behind the industrial structure adjustment, which shows that the two structures are not developing in coordination. However, the deviation degree of structure is mainly the imbalance between industrial structure and employment structure. The lag refers to the degree to which the employment structure lags behind the industrial structure in the time dimension, and when the relationship between industrial structure and employment structure is measured in terms of time. Employment lags behind time over a long horizon which in turn causes serious unemployment, and affect industrial structure adjustment and upgrade. The study construct an analysis model for the lag time of the employment structure and provide findings that will resolve the incompatible state of the two structures, and promote the healthy development of industrial structure and employment structure in Vietnam. Through the research conclusion it is revealed that, after three years, the effects of industrial structure adjustment fully reflected the change of employment structure in Vietnam. EFFECTS OF EMPLOYMENT STRUCTURE CHANGES ON REGIONAL PRODUCTIVITY DISPARITIES IN ROMANIA

    Get PDF
The sustained economic growth in 2000-2008 in Romania was accompanied by a declining employment rate from 63.6% to 59% in the same period, which improved the overall labor productivity. The unprecedented reduction of labor force participation in some regions was strongly determined by the decline in agricultural employment, negative net migration, as well as increase of social protection. These combined processes were mainly induced by Romania´s integration to the EU allowing higher labor force mobility and by social policy measures. In addition, there are longer lasting structural influences, such as the demographic and educational composition of employment. The paper aims at measuring the cross-regional variation of age structure and education levels in Romania and their contribution to regional differences in productivity compared to the most developed region - Bucharest-Ilfov (NUTS2 level). The differences regarding these structures and their changes in the last decade explain partly the territorial polarization of development, which is expected to increase under the impact of the economic crisis.

Underlying Factors in International Labour Migration in Asia: Population, Employment and Productivity Trends

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] In Asia, migration pressures are likely to remain strong for many years to come because of the diverging trajectories of growth of the working age population and the vast differences in earnings between the more developed and the poorer countries of the region. While trends in education and in employment structure are bound to modify the underlying pressures for international mobility, the conclusion that migration pressures will remain strong is no longer in doubt

The interaction mechanism between industrial structure and employment structure has great importance in the development of any economy. But it always needs a constant vigilance to adjust and evolve which promotes the economic development of a country. This study tries to find out the optimization correlation between industrial structure and employment structure in Vietnam for the period of 1995-2014. This study has found that labor is moving gradually from low efficiency production section to high efficiency production section. This paper uses the vector auto-regression model (VAR) to forecast industrial structure and employment structure change trend in Vietnam for 2015-2020. The forecasted results show that industrial structure trend is moving towards higher progression, eventually transforming to "321" pattern. However, the change in employment structure lags behind changes in the industrial structure as labor structure is showing a "132" pattern.
