Optimizing the beacon exchange rate for proactive autonomic configuration in ubiquitous MANETs
Proactive self-configuration is indispensable for MANETs like ubiquitous sensor networks (USNs), as component devices of the network are usually exposed to natural or man-made disasters due to the hostile deployment and ad hoc nature of the USNs. Network state beacons (NSBs) are exchanged among the key nodes of the network for crucial and effective monitoring of the network for steady state operation. The rate of beacon exchange (F/sub E/) and its contents, define the time and nature of the proactive action. Therefore it is very important to optimize these parameters to tune the functional response of the USN. This paper presents a comprehensive model for monitoring and proactively reconfiguring the network by optimizing the F/sub E/. The results confirm the improved throughput while maintaining QoS over longer periods of network operation
Green inter-cluster interference management in uplink of multi-cell processing systems
This paper examines the uplink of cellular systems employing base station cooperation for joint signal processing. We consider clustered cooperation and investigate effective techniques for managing inter-cluster interference to improve users' performance in terms of both spectral and energy efficiency. We use information theoretic analysis to establish general closed form expressions for the system achievable sum rate and the users' Bit-per-Joule capacity while adopting a realistic user device power consumption model. Two main inter-cluster interference management approaches are identified and studied, i.e., through: 1) spectrum re-use; and 2) users' power control. For the former case, we show that isolating clusters by orthogonal resource allocation is the best strategy. For the latter case, we introduce a mathematically tractable user power control scheme and observe that a green opportunistic transmission strategy can significantly reduce the adverse effects of inter-cluster interference while exploiting the benefits from cooperation. To compare the different approaches in the context of real-world systems and evaluate the effect of key design parameters on the users' energy-spectral efficiency relationship, we fit the analytical expressions into a practical macrocell scenario. Our results demonstrate that significant improvement in terms of both energy and spectral efficiency can be achieved by energy-aware interference management
VIRTUALIZED BASEBAND UNITS CONSOLIDATION IN ADVANCED LTE NETWORKS USING MOBILITY- AND POWER-AWARE ALGORITHMS
Virtualization of baseband units in Advanced Long-Term Evolution networks and a rapid performance growth of general purpose processors naturally raise the interest in resource multiplexing. The concept of resource sharing and management between virtualized instances is not new and extensively used in data centers. We adopt some of the resource management techniques to organize virtualized baseband units on a pool of hosts and investigate the behavior of the system in order to identify features which are particularly relevant to mobile environment. Subsequently, we introduce our own resource management algorithm specifically targeted to address some of the peculiarities identified by experimental results
Energy-Efficient Optimization for Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Large-Scale MIMO Systems Employing Energy Beamforming
In this letter, we consider a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output
(MIMO) system where the receiver should harvest energy from the transmitter by
wireless power transfer to support its wireless information transmission. The
energy beamforming in the large-scale MIMO system is utilized to address the
challenging problem of long-distance wireless power transfer. Furthermore,
considering the limitation of the power in such a system, this letter focuses
on the maximization of the energy efficiency of information transmission (bit
per Joule) while satisfying the quality-of-service (QoS) requirement, i.e.
delay constraint, by jointly optimizing transfer duration and transmit power.
By solving the optimization problem, we derive an energy-efficient resource
allocation scheme. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed
scheme.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. IEEE Wireless Communications Letters 201
