On the hydration of unsaturated barriers for high-level nuclear waste disposal
The paper addresses the topic of the effects of hydration and temperature on the final state of an engineered barrier composed of compacted bentonite. In particular the distributions of water content and dry density are examined. Those issues are explored with reference to a long-duration field test that reproduces at full scale the behaviour of an unsaturated compacted bentonite barrier subjected to hydration and thermal ef-fects. The state of the barrier is discussed at two different stages using data from two separate dismantling op-erations. It is observed that the state of the barrier is not homogenous even after reaching saturation. It is shown that coupled THM analyses are able to predict satisfactorily the state and evolution of the barrier throughout.Postprint (published version
A Neural Network Model of Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition, Recall and Timing
This paper describes the design of a self~organizing, hierarchical neural network model of unsupervised serial learning. The model learns to recognize, store, and recall sequences of unitized patterns, using either short-term memory (STM) or both STM and long-term memory (LTM) mechanisms. Timing information is learned and recall {both from STM and from LTM) is performed with a learned rhythmical structure. The network, bearing similarities with ART (Carpenter & Grossberg 1987a), learns to map temporal sequences to unitized patterns, which makes it suitable for hierarchical operation. It is therefore capable of self-organizing codes for sequences of sequences. The capacity is only limited by the number of nodes provided. Multi-rate relaying for performance improvement in IEEE 802.11 WLANs
It is well known that the presence of nodes using a low data transmit rate has a disproportionate impact on the performance of an IEEE 802.11 WLAN. ORP is an opportunistic relay protocol that allows nodes to increase their effective transmit rate by replacing a low data rate transmission with a two-hop sequence of shorter range, higher data rate transmissions, using an intermediate node as a relay. ORP differs from existing protocols in discovering relays experimentally, by optimistically making frames available for relaying. Relays identify themselves as suitable relays by forwarding these frames. This approach has several advantages compared with previously proposed relay protocols: Most importantly, ORP does not rely on observations of received signal strength to infer the availability of relay nodes and transmit rates. We present analytic and simulation results showing that ORP improves the throughput by up to 40% in a saturated IEEE 802.11b network
Discrepancies in Written Versus Calculated Durations in Opioid Prescriptions: Pre-Post Study.
BACKGROUND: The United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. Long-term use of opioid medications is associated with an increased risk of dependence. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention makes specific recommendations regarding opioid prescribing, including that prescription quantities should not exceed the intended duration of treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if opioid prescription quantities written at our institution exceed intended duration of treatment and whether enhancements to our electronic health record system improved any discrepancies.
METHODS: We examined the opioid prescriptions written at our institution for a 22-month period. We examined the duration of treatment documented in the prescription itself and calculated a duration based on the quantity of tablets and doses per day. We determined whether requiring documentation of the prescription duration affected these outcomes.
RESULTS: We reviewed 72,314 opioid prescriptions, of which 16.96% had a calculated duration that was greater than what wasdocumented in the prescription. Making the duration a required field significantly reduced this discrepancy (17.95% vs 16.21%,P
CONCLUSIONS: Health information technology vendors should develop tools that, by default, accurately represent prescription durations and/or modify doses and quantities dispensed based on provider-entered durations. This would potentially reduce unintended prolonged opioid use and reduce the potential for long-term dependence

Improving multiple broadcasting of multimedia traffic in wireless ad-hoc networks
The increasing use of multimedia streaming applications in addition with advent of internet television and radio, demands from today's wireless networks to handle with reliability multiple broadcasting and multicasting sources. However, the way that 802.11 standard, which is the primary technology in wireless networking, handle this type of traffic raises a series of problems mainly related to the lack of an effective feedback mechanism. This lack in turn, limits the capability of random backoff process to eliminate collisions and reduce reliability and fairness. This inherited drawback of the standard is affecting the way broadcast and multicast traffic is transmitted as well as the overall performance of the network. In this paper initially we are highlighting the drawback of the IEEE 802.11 MAC algorithm in handling multiple stations “media type” data broadcasting in an ad-hoc wireless network. Then, we propose two different approaches in alleviating these problems. The first approach is the simple linear increase of the contention window (CW) while the second propose a linear increase of the CW implementing an exclusive backoff number allocation (EBNA) algorithm. In addition we are modifying the 802.11 medium access control (MAC) algorithm to use the clear to send to self (CTS-to-Self) protection mechanism prior to every transmission. Both the above techniques are simulated and compared with the classic 802.11 MAC. The results show that the overall performance of the network can be improved using these alternative MAC methods
The Luminosity Function of Omega Centauri
Deep HST-WFPC2 observations of the stellar population in the globular cluster
Omega Cen (NGC 5139) have been used to measure the luminosity function of main
sequence stars at the low-mass end. Two fields have been investigated, located
respectively ~4.6' and ~7' away from the cluster center, or near the half-light
radius of this cluster (~4.8'). The color-magnitude diagrams derived from these
data show the cluster main sequence extending to the detection limit at I ~ 24.
Information on both color and magnitude is used to build the luminosity
functions of main sequence stars in these fields and the two independent
determinations are found to agree very well with each other within the
observational uncertainty. Both functions show a peak in the stellar
distribution around M_I ~ 9 followed by a drop at fainter magnitudes well
before photometric incompleteness becomes significant, as is typical of other
globular clusters observed with the HST. This result is at variance with
previous claims that the luminosity function of Omega Cen stays flat at low
masses, but is in excellent agreement with recent near-IR NICMOS observations

A Proximity based Retransmission Scheme for Power Line Ad-hoc LAN
Power line as an alternative for data transmission is being explored, and
also being used to a certain extent. But from the data transfer point of view,
power line, as a channel is highly dynamic and hence not quite suitable. To
convert the office or home wiring system to a Local Area Network (LAN),
adaptive changes are to be made to the existing protocols. In this paper, a
slotted transmission scheme is suggested, in which usable timeslots are found
out by physically sensing the media. Common usable timeslots for the
sender-receiver pair are used for communication. But these will not ensure safe
packet delivery since packets may be corrupted on the way during propagation
from sender to receiver. Therefore, we also suggest a proximity based
retransmission scheme where each machine in the LAN, buffers good packet and
machines close to the receiver retransmit on receiving a NACK.Comment: Already published in IJDP
