Participants in previous studies on the Dark Triad of personality (Machiavellianism, Psychopathy, and Narcissism) have been mainly college students or older. In the present study, participants were 799 high school students, and the purpose was to identify the factor structure of the Dark Triad and examine differences according to sex, school year, and career direction. Additionally, we investigated the relationship between the Dark Triad and help-seeking attitudes. The results were in line with previous evidence, as the hierarchical factor structure of the Dark Triad was identified. Furthermore, negative influences of Machiavellianism and Psychopathy on help-seeking attitudes were found. On the other hand, there was a positive influence of Narcissism on help-seeking attitudes.

The psychometric characteristics of the Dark Triad Scale (Jones & Paulhus, 2014) in an Argentinian context are presented. Two successive studies were carried out. Three hundred sixteen people, with an average age of 34.48 years (SD = 10.57), participated in Study 1. An exploratory factor analysis indicated a three-factor structure with suitable internal consistency (Machiavellianism: α = 0.92; narcissism: α = 0.91, and psychopathy: α = 0.89). Two hundred seventy-five people, with an average age of 32 years (SD = 8.10), participated in Study 2. A confirmatory factor analysis corroborated the three-factor structure. The three factors reached satisfactory composite reliability (CR greater than 0.70) and adequate convergent-discriminant validity (AVE greater than 0.50). The invariance of the scale?s parameters was demonstrated by sex. The results indicate that the Argentinian version of the Dark Triad Scale measures the dark side of personality with appropriate validity and reliability, both in men and women. Distinguishing the dark triad: evidence from the five-factor model and the Hogan Development Survey

    Get PDF
The Dark Triad consists of Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy. The aim was to add to the evidence for their differential validity. A battery including the Hogan Development Survey, the IPIP Big 5 and measures of Empathy, Aggression and the Dark Triad was administered to 241 undergraduate psychology participants at an Australian university. Multivariate regression indicated that the Dark Triad shared significant predictors and the Five Factor Model facets failed to clearly distinguish between them. The results of a principal components analysis indicated considerable overlap among the constructs. Overall, limited evidence for the differential construct validity of the Dark Triad of personality was found. Implications for the psychometric properties of some dominant paradigms in personality research, and applications in organisational settings, are discussed

Mate Poaching and the Dark Triad

3rd place in Psycholgy at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, 2016The Dark Triad is a collective term used to describe the malevolent personality dimensions of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. These constructs of the Dark Triad have been associated with many undesirable behaviors including the exploitation of others for personal gain. This study investigated the Dark Triad in the context of mate poaching—the act of stealing a mate away from an already established, and presumably, monogamous relationship. Past research has correlated the constructs of the Dark Triad with self-reported acts of mate poaching, but this is the first study to assess mate poaching in relation to the Dark Triad using quasi-experimental methodology. College students (N = 142) participated in what they believed to be a test of a new dating service geared towards college students. Students filled out personality questionnaires that measured Dark Triad traits. Afterwards, they were ostensibly matched with an opposite-sex target whom they were led to believe was a student on campus who shared similar personality traits. The target's image and profile were held constant with the exception that the relationship status was randomly assigned to be either single or in a relationship. The results indicated that only the construct of psychopathy was related to mate poaching. This effect was only found for those individuals who also reported being in a relationship. For the other constructs, no desire to mate poach was detected. This is contrasted with self-report studies that have indicated that those high in dimensions of the Dark Triad report engaging in mate poaching. No embargoAcademic Major: Neuroscienc

On the dark side of the 'secular': is the religious-secular distinction a binary?

Recent scholarship claims to have revealed the problematic nature of the religious-secular distinction: (1) the distinction is slippery or fluid; (2) the meanings of the words "religious" and "secular" have changed over multiple historical contexts; (3) the distinction is a binary; (4) it is essentialist in nature. Analyzing these objections, the article shows that it is very difficult to find a clear problem statement. To whom is the religious-secular distinction a problem and why? The distinction was originally made within Christian theology, where it concerned a triad rather than a binary: true religion, false religions, and the secular. The notion of the secular always required the presence of the opposition between truth and falsity in religion, because it was the sphere that remained after true and false religion had been demarcated. In this sense, the secular had a " dark side," namely, idolatry or false religion. To a Christian believer, there is no conceptual problem involved in making the religious-secular distinction, because his or her theology helps him specify what true and false religion are and, as a consequence, what the secular is. However, because of its neutrality in religious matters, the liberal state has tried to reduce the theological triad to a binary opposition between religion and the secular. The inevitable failure of this attempt has created a formless secular sphere that is haunted by its dark side: the notion of false religion

Dynamical analysis for a vector-like dark energy

    Get PDF
In this paper we perform a dynamical analysis for a vector field as a candidate for the dark energy, in the presence of a barothropic fluid. The vector is one component of the so-called cosmic triad, which is a set of three identical copies of an abelian field pointing mutually in orthogonal directions. In order to generalize the analysis, we also assumed the interaction between dark energy and the barotropic fluid, with a phenomenological coupling. Both matter and dark energy eras can be successfully described by the critical points, indicating that the dynamical system theory is a viable tool to analyze asymptotic states of such cosmological models.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, version to appear in EPJ

A Kaluza-Klein Inspired Brans-Dicke Gravity with Dark Matter and Dark Energy Model

We propose the Kaluza-Klein inspired Brans-Dicke gravity model containing possible existence of dark matter and dark energy. The massive scalar field coupled with gravity in 5 dimensional spacetime can be reduced to 4 dimensional gravity along with the dilaton ϕ\phi, gauge fields AμA_{\mu}, and the tower of scalar fields ηn\eta_n. Two additional gauge fields are introduced to form "Cosmic Triad" vector field scenario. We then use the dynamical system approach to analyze the critical points and their corresponding physical parameters. We found that in the case where only the zero mode of the Kaluza-Klein scalar is decoupled, the system contains both dark matter and dark energy phase depending on the mass parameter with the presence of the gauge field.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure

On Energy Conditions and Stability in Effective Loop Quantum Cosmology

In isotropic loop quantum cosmology, non-perturbatively modified dynamics of a minimally coupled scalar field violates weak, strong and dominant energy conditions when they are stated in terms of equation of state parameter. The violation of strong energy condition helps to have non-singular evolution by evading singularity theorems thus leading to a generic inflationary phase. However, the violation of weak and dominant energy conditions raises concern, as in general relativity these conditions ensure causality of the system and stability of vacuum via Hawking-Ellis conservation theorem. It is shown here that the non-perturbatively modified kinetic term contributes negative pressure but positive energy density. This crucial feature leads to violation of energy conditions but ensures positivity of energy density, as scalar matter Hamiltonian remains bounded from below. It is also shown that the modified dynamics restricts group velocity for inhomogeneous modes to remain sub-luminal thus ensuring causal propagation across spatial distances.Comment: 29 pages, revtex4; few clarifications, references added, to appear in CQ

Non-Abelian SS-term dark energy and inflation

We study the role that a cosmic triad in the generalized SU(2)SU(2) Proca theory, specifically in one of the pieces of the Lagrangian that involves the symmetric version SμνS_{\mu \nu} of the gauge field strength tensor FμνF_{\mu \nu}, has on dark energy and primordial inflation. Regarding dark energy, the triad behaves asymptotically as a couple of radiation perfect fluids whose energy densities are negative for the SS term but positive for the Yang-Mills term. This leads to an interesting dynamical fine-tuning mechanism that gives rise to a combined equation of state parameter ω1\omega \simeq -1 and, therefore, to an eternal period of accelerated isotropic expansion for an ample spectrum of initial conditions. Regarding primordial inflation, one of the critical points of the associated dynamical system can describe a prolonged period of isotropic slow-roll inflation sustained by the SS term. This period ends up when the Yang-Mills term dominates the energy density leading to the radiation dominated epoch. Unfortunately, in contrast to the dark energy case, the primordial inflation scenario is strongly sensitive to the coupling constants and initial conditions. The whole model, including the other pieces of the Lagrangian that involve SμνS_{\mu \nu}, might evade the recent strong constraints coming from the gravitational wave signal GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart GRB 170817A.Comment: LaTeX file in RevTeX 4.1 style, 8 pages, 20 figures. v2: several changes here and there to improve the overall presentation of the paper.
