Predicting the Output From a Stochastic Computer Model When a Deterministic Approximation is Available
The analysis of computer models can be aided by the construction of surrogate
models, or emulators, that statistically model the numerical computer model.
Increasingly, computer models are becoming stochastic, yielding different
outputs each time they are run, even if the same input values are used.
Stochastic computer models are more difficult to analyse and more difficult to
emulate - often requiring substantially more computer model runs to fit. We
present a method of using deterministic approximations of the computer model to
better construct an emulator. The method is applied to numerous toy examples,
as well as an idealistic epidemiology model, and a model from the building
performance field
Space station models, mockups and simulators
Schematic outlines for space station models, mockups, and simulators are presented. The types of Boeing models, mockups, and simulators are given along with the classes and characteristics. The use of models in the 767 program is briefly given. Computerized human factors tools are outlined. The use of computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing in the approach for the space station is advocated
Personalized Brain-Computer Interface Models for Motor Rehabilitation
We propose to fuse two currently separate research lines on novel therapies
for stroke rehabilitation: brain-computer interface (BCI) training and
transcranial electrical stimulation (TES). Specifically, we show that BCI
technology can be used to learn personalized decoding models that relate the
global configuration of brain rhythms in individual subjects (as measured by
EEG) to their motor performance during 3D reaching movements. We demonstrate
that our models capture substantial across-subject heterogeneity, and argue
that this heterogeneity is a likely cause of limited effect sizes observed in
TES for enhancing motor performance. We conclude by discussing how our
personalized models can be used to derive optimal TES parameters, e.g.,
stimulation site and frequency, for individual patients.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, conference submissio
Agent-Based Models and Simulations in Economics and Social Sciences: from conceptual exploration to distinct ways of experimenting
Now that complex Agent-Based Models and computer simulations
spread over economics and social sciences - as in most sciences of complex
systems -, epistemological puzzles (re)emerge. We introduce new
epistemological tools so as to show to what precise extent each author is right
when he focuses on some empirical, instrumental or conceptual significance of
his model or simulation. By distinguishing between models and simulations,
between types of models, between types of computer simulations and between
types of empiricity, section 2 gives conceptual tools to explain the rationale of
the diverse epistemological positions presented in section 1. Finally, we claim
that a careful attention to the real multiplicity of denotational powers of
symbols at stake and then to the implicit routes of references operated by
models and computer simulations is necessary to determine, in each case, the
proper epistemic status and credibility of a given model and/or simulation
Computer supported estimation of input data for transportation models
Control and management of transportation systems frequently rely on optimization or simulation methods based on a suitable model. Such a model uses optimization or simulation procedures and correct input data. The input data define transportation infrastructure and transportation flows. Data acquisition is a costly process and so an efficient approach is highly desirable. The infrastructure can be recognized from drawn maps using segmentation, thinning and vectorization. The accurate definition of network topology and nodes position is the crucial part of the
process. Transportation flows can be analyzed as vehicle’s behavior based on video sequences of typical traffic situations. Resulting information consists of vehicle position, actual speed and acceleration along the road section. Data for individual vehicles are statistically processed and standard vehicle characteristics can be recommended for vehicle generator in simulation models
Overview on agent-based social modelling and the use of formal languages
Transdisciplinary Models and Applications investigates a variety of programming languages used in validating and verifying models in order to assist in their eventual implementation. This book will explore different methods of evaluating and formalizing simulation models, enabling computer and industrial engineers, mathematicians, and students working with computer simulations to thoroughly understand the progression from simulation to product, improving the overall effectiveness of modeling systems.Postprint (author's final draft
