The nature of risk in complex projects
© 2017 Project Management Institute, Inc. Risk analysis is important for complex projects; however, systemicity makes evaluating risk in real projects difficult. Looking at the causal structure of risks is a start, but causal chains need to include management actions, the motivations of project actors, and sociopolitical project complexities as well as intra-connectedness and feedback. Common practice based upon decomposition-type methods is often shown to point to the wrong risks. A complexity structure is used to identify systemicity and draws lessons about key risks. We describe how to analyze the systemic nature of risk and how the contractor and client can understand the ramifications of their actions

Structural Complexity and Decay in FLOSS Systems: An Inter-Repository Study
Past software engineering literature has firmly established that software architectures and the associated code decay over time. Architectural decay is, potentially, a major issue in Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects, since developers sporadically joining FLOSS projects do not always have a clear understanding of the underlying architecture, and may break the overall conceptual structure by several small changes to the code base.
This paper investigates whether the structure of a FLOSS system and its decay can also be influenced by the repository in which it is retained: specifically,
two FLOSS repositories are studied to understand whether the complexity of the software structure in the sampled projects is comparable, or one repository hosts more complex systems than the other. It is also studied
whether the effort to counteract this complexity is dependent on the repository, and the governance it gives to the hosted projects.
The results of the paper are two-fold: on one side, it is shown that the repository hosting larger and more active projects presents more complex structures. On the other side, these larger and more complex systems benefit
from more anti-regressive work to reduce this complexity

Cooperation and Competition when Bidding for Complex Projects: Centralized and Decentralized Perspectives
To successfully complete a complex project, be it a construction of an
airport or of a backbone IT system, agents (companies or individuals) must form
a team having required competences and resources. A team can be formed either
by the project issuer based on individual agents' offers (centralized
formation); or by the agents themselves (decentralized formation) bidding for a
project as a consortium---in that case many feasible teams compete for the
contract. We investigate rational strategies of the agents (what salary should
they ask? with whom should they team up?). We propose concepts to characterize
the stability of the winning teams and study their computational complexity

The Real Meaning of Complex Minkowski-Space World-Lines
In connection with the study of shear-free null geodesics in Minkowski space,
we investigate the real geometric effects in real Minkowski space that are
induced by and associated with complex world-lines in complex Minkowski space.
It was already known, in a formal manner, that complex analytic curves in
complex Minkowski space induce shear-free null geodesic congruences. Here we
look at the direct geometric connections of the complex line and the real
structures. Among other items, we show, in particular, how a complex world-line
projects into the real Minkowski space in the form of a real shear-free null
geodesic congruence.Comment: 16 page
The structure of R&D collaboration networks in the European Framework Programmes
Using a large and novel data source, we study the structure of R&D collaboration net-works in the first five EU Framework Programmes (FPs). The networks display proper-ties typical for complex networks, including scale-free degree distributions and the small-world property. Structural features are common across FPs, indicating similar network formation mechanisms despite changes in governance rules. Several findings point towards the existence of a stable core of interlinked actors since the early FPs with integration increasing over time. This core consists mainly of universities and research organisations. We observe assortative mixing by degree of projects, but not by degree of organisations. Unexpectedly, we find only weak association between central projects and project size, suggesting that different types of projects attract different groups of actors. In particular, large projects appear to have included few of the pivotal actors in the networks studied. Central projects only partially mirror funding priorities, indicating field-specific differences in network structures.
