The processing of color preference in the brain
Decades of research has established that humans have preferences for some colors (e.g., blue) and a dislike of others (e.g., dark chartreuse), with preference varying systematically with variation in hue (e.g., Hurlbert & Owen, 2015). Here, we used functional MRI to investigate why humans have likes and dislikes for simple patches of color, and to understand the neural basis of preference, aesthetics and value judgements more generally. We looked for correlations of a behavioural measure of color preference with the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response when participants performed an irrelevant orientation judgement task on colored squares. A whole brain analysis found a significant correlation between BOLD activity and color preference in the posterior midline cortex (PMC), centred on the precuneus but extending into the adjacent posterior cingulate and cuneus. These results demonstrate that brain activity is modulated by color preference, even when such preferences are irrelevant to the ongoing task the participants are engaged. They also suggest that color preferences automatically influence our processing of the visual world. Interestingly, the effect in the PMC overlaps with regions identified in neuroimaging studies of preference and value judgements of other types of stimuli. Therefore, our findings extends this literature to show that the PMC is related to automatic encoding of subjective value even for basic visual features such as color
A Comparative Study of National Building Color of Mongol and Han Nationality in Songyuan City, China
On the basis of clarifying the color preference of Mongolian and Han people, this study collects relevant color data through on-the-spot color measurement of Mongolian and Han buildings in Songyuan, and establishes the color Hue,Value and Chroma of Mongolian and Han buildings in China used the Munsell color analysis method. Female mating preferences in blind cave tetras Astyanax fasciatus (Characidae, Teleostei).
The Mexican tetra Astyanax fasciatus has evolved a variety of more or less color- and eyeless cave populations. Here we examined the evolution of the female preference for large male body size within different populations of this species, either surface- or cave-dwelling. Given the choice between visual cues from a large and a small male, females from the surface form as well as females from an eyed cave form showed a strong preference for large males. When only non-visual cues were presented in darkness, the surface females did not prefer either males. Among the six cave populations studied, females of the eyed cave form and females of one of the five eyeless cave populations showed a preference for large males. Apparently, not all cave populations of Astyanax have evolved non-visual mating preferences. We discuss the role of selection by benefits of non-visual mate choice for the evolution of non-visual mating preferences
Breaking the Curve with CANDELS: A Bayesian Approach to Reveal the Non-Universality of the Dust-Attenuation Law at High Redshift
Dust attenuation affects nearly all observational aspects of galaxy
evolution, yet very little is known about the form of the dust-attenuation law
in the distant Universe. Here, we model the spectral energy distributions
(SEDs) of galaxies at z = 1.5--3 from CANDELS with rest-frame UV to near-IR
imaging under different assumptions about the dust law, and compare the amount
of inferred attenuated light with the observed infrared (IR) luminosities. Some
individual galaxies show strong Bayesian evidence in preference of one dust law
over another, and this preference agrees with their observed location on the
plane of infrared excess (IRX, ) and UV slope
(). We generalize the shape of the dust law with an empirical model,
where
is the dust law of Calzetti et al. (2000), and show that there
exists a correlation between the color excess and tilt with
+ . Galaxies with high
color excess have a shallower, starburst-like law, and those with low color
excess have a steeper, SMC-like law. Surprisingly, the galaxies in our sample
show no correlation between the shape of the dust law and stellar mass,
star-formation rate, or . The change in the dust law with color excess
is consistent with a model where attenuation is caused by by scattering, a
mixed star-dust geometry, and/or trends with stellar population age,
metallicity, and dust grain size. This rest-frame UV-to-near-IR method shows

Do Instantons Like a Colorful Background?
We investigate chiral symmetry breaking and color symmetry breaking in QCD.
The effective potential of the corresponding scalar condensates is discussed in
the presence of non-perturbative contributions from the semiclassical
one-instanton sector. We concentrate on a color singlet scalar background which
can describe chiral condensation, as well as a color octet scalar background
which can generate mass for the gluons. Whereas a non-vanishing singlet chiral
field is favored by the instantons, we have found no indication for a

Ellsberg Paradox and Second-order Preference Theories on Ambiguity: Some New Experimental Evidence
We study the two-color problem by Ellsberg (1961) with the modification that the decision maker draws twice with replacement and a different color wins in each draw. The 50-50 risky urn turns out to have the highest risk conceivable among all prospects including the ambiguous one, while all feasible color distributions are mean-preserving spreads to one another. We show that the well-known second-order sophisticated theories like MEU, CEU, and REU as well as Savage’s first-order theory of SEU share the same predictions in our design, for any first-order risk attitude. Opsin expression predicts male nuptial color in threespine stickleback.
Theoretical models of sexual selection suggest that male courtship signals can evolve through the build-up of genetic correlations between the male signal and female preference. When preference is mediated via increased sensitivity of the signal characteristics, correlations between male signal and perception/sensitivity are expected. When signal expression is limited to males, we would expect to find signal-sensitivity correlations in males. Here, we document such a correlation within a breeding population of threespine stickleback mediated by differences in opsin expression. Males with redder nuptial coloration express more long-wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsin, making them more sensitive to orange and red. This correlation is not an artifact of shared tuning to the optical microhabitat. Such correlations are an essential feature of many models of sexual selection, and our results highlight the potential importance of opsin expression variation as a substrate for signal-preference evolution. Finally, these results suggest a potential sensory mechanism that could drive negative frequency-dependent selection via male-male competition and thus maintain variation in male nuptial color
Color-Octet Fraction in J/Psi Production and Absorption
The cross section between a pair and a nucleon is small and
sensitive to the separation if the pair is in a color-singlet
state, but very large and insensitive to the separation if it is in a
color-octet state. We use this property in an absorption model involving both
color components to deduce the color structure of pairs produced in
reactions. Our analysis shows that the NA3, NA38 and E772
data are not inconsistent with the theoretical picture that color-octet and
color-singlet precursors are produced in roughly equal proportions if the
produced color-singlet precursors are pointlike and transparent. However, if
the color-singlet precursors are not transparent but have a cross section of a
few mb, these data do show a definite preference for a larger fraction of
color-singlet precursors. In either case, the color-octet fraction increases
